Lights... Camera... ACTION!!: A Hollywood Quest

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Hi Magoose here one of the guys helping Duke.

So we have some bad news.

The quest has been canceled as duke does not want to write it anymore.

I'm going to ask if I can take over for it, because I like this quest, and it would be a shame to kill it
TBF, Mags, you have been doing a lot of the heavylifting for the quest, so this will be in good hands. :)

To be clear to everyone, this is just me burning out on imagination of the quest, since my muse has been hitting me over the head a lot with so many different ideas that I just can't find myself too interested in this.

I'll still hang out here, though, since this still does have a sepcial place in my heart.

I'd like to thank you all for making this a wonderful experience while it lasted.

I'd also like to thank @Magoose, @Fluffy_serpent, and @Martin Noctis for doing so much to help prepare and write this quest. I couldn't have done it without you all. :D

I'll see you all around.

With so many regards, Duke William Of.

I agree that we should expand as much as reasonable...and also that Star Wars is now done so we shouldn't be getting too many inane drops of money for a while. This is similar to Fanhunter's plan, but I took out the Sega Arcade and the Bootleghut. The Sega Arcade makes sense in OTL...but we are now creating the technological equivalent of the Dreamcast. The age of Arcades is significantly shortened as the increased processing power makes it such that consoles can do a lot of arcade games and there just isn't enough of a hardware difference to make the salon worthwhile.

Didn't do the bootleg museum as it seems a bit mean-spirited and also would have issues with getting the rights for the cinemas, etc. Would rather have made a Museum to old Hollywood, including Clint Eastwood, Gregory Peck, etc.

Added in theme parks due to George wanting to build a ride and this being a way to solve the problem with Mike being happy. Also, a new area for creativity and also a new way to make money now that Star Wars is (for now) finished.

[X] Plan Expand and George Wants Parks
-[X]The Movie Writers Room Extravaganza
: So the writer's room needs to be expanded… Holy fuck, does it need expanding. So you do the only thing that can be done. You take a look at expanding them, but spending tens of millions of dollars. Cost 400 million (The Writer's room will no longer produce films every six months, any film can be made without the script malus as there is now hundreds of writers and scripts being produced or purchased at a rate that is dizzying.)
-[X]The TV Writers Room Extravaganza: So Brandon basically came to you and needed to do one thing. He needs to upgrade and hire over a thousand tv writers for the shows that you want to produce in the future. And that means… well he needs money to expand. Cost 300 million (The TV writers room will see a large increase in quality.)
-[X] Pixar Computers: So Pixar needs more powerful computers. And Apple is offering at a discount. Cost 50 million dollars (Pixars quality increases)
-[X]LucasArts Expansion: The Lucasarts branch needs an expansion. So now its time to give them some love. Cost 100 mil (Can now produce three video game projects at once.)
-[X] Marvel Manga: A Bridge between the east and the west web-slung with care and woven into a weekly magazine. Excelsior! Cost 200 million. (Found Magazine in Japan. Gain Manga artists and writers for Eclipse Imprint)
-[X] ILM Fashion Department: a department of Industrial Light and Magic that specializes on the art of creating costumes and props. While technologically ILM is making the most visually beautiful movies, the high-definition quality won't matter if the audience doesn't suspend their disbelief when looking at the characters. Just as a magician needs their trusty cape and wand to sell the act, so too must our characters dress and operate with authenticity whether it be historical accuracy, fantastical realism or contemporary storytelling... So better to make sure that the tailors, leatherworkers, blacksmiths, make-up artists, hairdressers, and everyone involved in this essential process have available not only the best material and equipment that the money can buy, but that that they are well paid foe their jobs. Cost $150 Million
-[X] Lucasfilm´s PR department: After a lot of effort even Bruce O'Brian has been convinced of the importance of managing your public persona correctly, and what better way of doing it than by hiring an expert to do it? Whereas anyone in Hollywood can get a rather decent PR team for $5 million or less, it is wise to spend significantly more to make sure your team is one of the best in Hollywood. Cost $20 Million.
-[X] Dream Parks Division: George has been inspired to create a whole new type of ride merging ILM's technology with motion simulators. A true revolution in rides. However, Mike (after a huge fight) got a promise from him that no one at Lucasfilm would help out the House of Mouse by giving them a Star Wars ride in their themepark. What to do?

The answer is simple: make another themepark and out-do Disney. To further this plan, a whole new division was created and plans are made to purchase an existing themepark and to bring the same creativity and quality that exemplifies LucasFilm to yet another industry. At this time, the most likely target is Knott's Berry Farm, who just lost its original founder. As it is located in Orange County, it is close enough to a majority of Lucasfilm's resources so that designers and engineers can actually go to the site. Plus, with a purchase of a large amount of (pretty cheap) land that surrounds the park, a park could be made that would tickle George's inspiration while making Mike happy.

I am going to be honest, I didn't do the Arcade thingy because of the potential profit, I did it because I missed the old Arcades Salons and I am sad that most of them in my country have become gambling dens... So I was kind of hoping that we could export the Japanese model to the rest of the world, in which despite of the existence of PC Gaming and Home consoles Arcades are still very much alive, and they are one of the most important places for the youth to socialize...

Well, I think it was funny and you know it would be almost impossible for anyone who has plagiarised something to accuse the original author of copyright infringement...

But if more people think it is too mean-spirited I would be willing to remove it...

I am planning on adding the Theme Park to my plan once Magoose gives us an appropriate budget... But until then I think that it is too soon to add anything...

Not because I don't tihnk its possible, but its because if you want to go the Walt Disney Route...

You have to convince George to do that.

I think it's funny but I also think it's expensive and probably unprofitable. I also think it's some legal nonsense waiting to happen. They may not stand up in court but someone will still sue or make a stink of it.

If we want to show off knockoffs I think we should have some sort of hosted show like Mystery Science Theater not a full blown museum.

Ok fair enough, then I will edit my plan and remove it...

@Magoose If you don't mind can you answer these questions about possible investments so that we can alter our investment plans accordingly?
  • Are any of these video game companies: Capcom, Konami, Activision, Electronic Arts, Interplay, Sierra, SNK, Namco... available for purchase as subsidiaries? And how much would we need to spend on them?
  • Is Aardman Animations available for purchase as a subsidiary, or they are still too obscure? And if we can, how much would it cost?
  • What would be the budget needed to create a division of Dreamworks specialised on Stop Motion Animation?
  • Which budget we would need to create a chain of Lucas Stores similar to the Disney Stores?
  • Alternatively how much would it cost to purchase an already existing toy chain store like Imaginarium, KB Toys or Toys"r"us?
  • Is Jim Henson so burned up that he wants to sell the company already or Hollywood has not crushed his spirit yet? And if he wants to sell his company how much we would need to spend to to get it as a subsidiary

none yet.

Mostly because well... nintendo hasn't started to fuck shit up yet.
Is Aardman Animations available for purchase as a subsidiary, or they are still too obscure? And if we can, how much would it cost?
No.
What would be the budget needed to create a division of Dreamworks specialised on Stop Motion Animation?
150 million
Which budget we would need to create a chain of Lucas Stores similar to the Disney Stores?
... I don't recommend that, for two reasons.

One: to few toy ideas
Two: Disney fuckery.
Alternatively how much would it cost to purchase an already existing toy chain store like Imaginarium, KB Toys or Toys"r"us?
Again I don't recommend, because they make more money from us as a middle man.
Is Jim Henson so burned up that he wants to sell the company already or Hollywood has not crushed his spirit yet? And if he wants to sell his company how much we would need to spend to to get it as a subsidiary
we haven't seen him break his spirit because we helped him save it.

Ok good to know...

So what do you think guys? Should we create Laika this upgrade turn or should we wait until we recruit someone like Will Winton, Henry Selick, or Tim Burton to act as the head of the Studio...
I suggest we wait. Unless we have a good line up of films that require stop motion It'd be better for us to hold up on it until we have a good specialist.

Frankly, I'd just wait, though I don't see why we would need to make an entire department/studio just for Stop-Motion pictures when we could just do it by hiring the ones who specialize on making said kind of movies.

Also, I'd go for either Henry Sellick or Joe Ranft. Both are the kind of directors I need for my pitch for The BFG to come to live.

Ok, I was thinking something similar, so let's wait for now...

Honestly, I would go for Will Vinton seeing the great job he has done with basically all of Laika's movies in OTL, and that he has the most experience with Stop Motion...

By the way @Magoose how much would these two cost us these two things? I am all for improving the work environment for the benefit of our workers, to make the competition look bad by comparison, and so that when Pondsmith puts not-LucasFilms in Cyberpunk we are one of the coolest Corporations around...
[] LucasDorms: A very cozy habitation complex adjacent or otherwise very close to the other facilities. Welcome to anyone who needs a quick nap or a place to stay. Very appealing to young aspiring actors, writers and other artists coming in from afar with stars in their eyes, ideas in their heads, and passion in their eyes. Includes a very expansive, dining area boasting a restaurant-tier buffet and a well-equipped gym. All financed by Lucasfilms' success.

[] LucasLounge: A complex consisting of multiple entertainment and recreational facilities ranging from tabletop, board and video game rooms, PC and console stations, at least two pools, a library filled to bursting with books and luxurious reading nooks, a music archive and listening booths, an arcade, and, naturally, multiple private and sizeable cinemas to watch the Lucasfilms movie and TV media roster. At this point, you're just pampering your people.

50 million each.

And just to let you know... future endeavors will see a price increase again.

the second half of the 80's are coming.

Couldn't we get the same effect by buying out Showbiz pizza or Chucky cheeses or something and building them up?

Hey @Magoose how much would it cost to buy atari?

... You really don't want me to start rolling the dice.
1. I absolutely do. 2. That doesn't really address my question. If we had "Lucas Stores" in the same vein as Disney Stores, toys wouldn't be most of what's being sold in them, not to mention that stuff like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Pacific Rim, Gundam, G.I. Joe, etc. all have plenty of toys and whatnot that we can draw from if we needed to, so the toy thing isn't really a concern. The other thing is why would Disney have literally any say in the matter at all? At least to the point that they can engage in "fuckery." Sure, I'm certain they'd be making moves to box us out, but it's not as though have (or at least, they shouldn't have) the ability to do anything about it other than directly competing. I don't understand why either thing would be a concern.

The thing is, currently, you don't have enough brands for me to comfortably start that without giving you roll maluses.

so I don't recommend starting that Lucasstore thing until a little bit later.

Thanks for the info...

I have updated my plan with LucasDorms, LucasLounge, and Lucasfilm´s advisory committee of experts...

I will go to bed soon, but as always I am open to suggestions...

I am not American so I didn't really think about them, but AFAIK they were kind of crappy to begin with and I would like something cooler like Asian big arcades...
Hey @Magoose how much would it cost to buy atari?
Honestly, once they crash and burn in their hubris in a few months we can probably buy them with spare change from the parkimeter...

Wich, I would only recommend it because Atari's logo is pretty damn iconic...

From what I'm told they were alright and were hit by the collapse of the American arcade market. But I guess your looking for a Dave and Busters kind of location?

They also have a number of games to pad out your arcade idea. At least until we get enough of our own games going. Plus the videogames crash has already hit so they probably aren't doing so hot right now either.
