Big Tac, gonna Big Tac I guess.
I thought I was the epitome of "nuke it from orbit" for this quest's participants and I agree completely that this thing is adequately armed.

Logistics bases simply don't defend themselves and still function, they're defended by mobile forces.

Losing one in a bolt from the blue attack is an unpleasant but acceptable outcome to afford 10 instead of 4-5z

No, bigger hull = MORE SCIENCE!!
[JK] All the science, medium range, decently armed. (Light Cruiser: ~400k)

Honestly, some kind of ultra long range bombardment ship meant to destroy star bases from beyond their range to retaliate sounds like the kind of game changing weapon that would show up in star trek as a major problem to solve. It also sounds like the kind of thing that a power could both develop, and develop a strategic or technological counter to. So if one shows up we'll probably get to design star fleets version of it, with the advantage of see how starfleet adapted to counter the other guys first.
My only opinion on this entire discussion is that you guys are monofocusing on hard offenses and defenses as a measure of survivability. When they are not the only factor in play.

For example?
The electronic warfare suite on a twenty million ton orbital construct with the egregiously generous energy budget of a Federation station is going to be horrifying.

I give better than even odds that long range bombardment is infeasible simply because given sufficient time and range, the systems on this space station will spoof most of the incoming missiles and torpedoes.

Bigger ship = space for more capabilities.
Starfleet are generalists, and their strength comes from the synergy of multiple capabilities in one vessel.

(Light Cruiser: ~400k)

The size creep is real. Less than 40 years and the expected size for a light cruiser is nearly half again larger.

I prefer specialized ships but I think the quest was in agreement that we wanted to do a new light crusier to replace the Cygnus as a front-line combatant. This seems like two birds for one stone.

Edit: A light crusier to replace the Cygnus and be capable of serving as a frontline combatant.

We have done a number of smaller ships so I want to do a big one next.

Cygnus was apparently used as a rear line combatant, hauling supplies for other ships and stuff. I think it was the Explorers and Selachii-class that were on the frontlines

Sorry, I didn't do a good job explaining. The Cygnus was known to be inadequate before the Kzinti war, we had the option to design either a Heavy Frigate to replace the Skate class or a Light Crusier to replace the Cygnus as our main combat vessel. We chose the former for cost efficiency and build-time, but we still agreed that the Cygnus needed to be replaced soon.

Thing is though, this isn't replacing the Cygnus class, it's replacing the science vessel (which I have completely forgotten the name of) Edit: Curiosity-class.

It's replacing both, or at least has the reasonable potential to do so. Also wacky to think that a current gen Light Crusier is 88٪ the mass of a Sagamathra.

It wouldn't be replacing the Cygnus in cargo and engineering roles but it would be replacing it in combat roles. Progress isn't a straight line, sometimes there aren't one-to-one equivalents to the previous generation and roles that were fulfilled by one thing can be split up among multiple successors.

I'm surprised that the station being cheap to build was explicitly called out - we did take 3/4 of the available cost increases. Was it a secret modifier from taking the fusion reactor or were they actually expecting us to go all-out and take 4/4?

Anyway,

Tough choice, as smaller is more affordable - but smaller means we have to be really picky about what we install.

Ugh, just checked the retrospective for Project Brahe, the frigate option is actually smaller than the Curiosity class ended up being.
