Hedeby Spar Final
[X] Plan Speed And Counters
-[X] Remove our armor and pull out a shield.
-[X] Before the fight, reassign +4 damage damage bonus on Ignition to +8 extra dice (leaving +9 dice, +2 damage), during the fight all Firebomb Strikes will be used to propel the weapon, making sure not to heat up the weapon in a way that would cauterize anything.
-[X] Assign our 8 shapeshifting slots to Supported Grip, Increased Lung Capacity x1, Dense Muscles x2, and Adrenaline Rush x4 this turn.
-[X] Use Sundersight to analyze our opponents weaknesses as we fight
-[X] Invest 4 Orthstirr in Hugr, 2 in Fylgja, 2 in Composure, 4 in Tactics, 4 in Scouting (-16 Orthstirr)
-[X] 111d6 Attack (111d6 tricks)
-[X] 30d6 Defense (30d6 tricks)
-[X] 0d6 Intercept
-[X] Put 3 Orthstirr into 6 layers of Reinforce Shield (actually on our shield for once) before the combat begins (-3 Orthstirr) and add an instance of Explosive Reactive Armor (-9 Orthstirr, +4 Stoked Dice, 5 damage)
-[X] Activate Stoker State 4 (-12 Orthstirr), Slipstream (-8 Orthstirr),and Ember-Wing Cloak (No cost, +4 Stoked Dice) as combat begins. All subsequent actions receive +2d6 from Sunshine and Skyfire.
-[X] Put up a 120d6+7 (w/Hugareida) Atgeir Bodyguard adding **1 Odr** (-126 Orthstirr, **-1 Odr**), and an Atgeir Counter Stab adding **1 Odr** set up to do up to eleven 10d6+7 Sharpenedx4 Firebomb Strikes (-52 Orthstirr, **-1 Odr**, 7-9 damage each), along with two 30d6+7 Sword Guards (-34 Orthstirr each).
-[X] If we are hit in any way past our shield use Slowing Slog (-81 Orthstirr)
-[X] Stop whatever attack sequence we are making as soon as first blood is drawn
-[X] Start by using Threadcutter for nine 11d6+7 Sharpenedx4 Lightning-Charged Basic Attacks (-55 Orthstirr, -9 Stoked Dice, then +18 Stoked Dice total, 7 damage each) followed by a Sharpenedx81 Lightning-Charged Stoking Strike w/Puncture for 235d6+7 adding 15 Stoked Dice including the 9 from Threadcutter itself (-94 Orthstirr, -6 Stoked Dice, 12 damage). Follow that up with ten 20d6+7 Sharpenedx4 Lightning-Charged Firebomb-Strikes (-5 Orthstirr and +4 Stoked Dice each, 10-12 damage each).
-[X] If he puts up any Guards or visible buffs, including before the Threadcutter, use up to two 20d6+7 Devouring Blaze attacks (-8 Orthstirr, -3 Stoked Dice each, 1-2 damage each) to remove them before continuing on with the rest of our attack routine. If we seem about to go over our Dice Cap on Stoked Pool also use one then as a safety valve burning more Stoked Dice if needed to ensure that doesn't happen (though no more than, like, 21 at most, and that only if we're already over 60).
-[X] Against the first melee Trick attack against us interpose our shield, which should break Reinforce Shield and activating Explosive-Reactive Armor against the person attacking.
-[X] After that first attack use Atgeir Bodyguard to defend against all attacks first.
-[X] Against basic melee attacks or melee Trick Attacks after the first (or simultaneous with it) that get through or past Atgeir Bodyguard, default to using Contested Movement with all remaining Stoked Pool (-1 Orthstirr, 20d6+7 Hamr Roll, lose all Stoked Pool then +4 Stoked Dice) and counterattack with Sharpened Lightning Charged Firebomb Strikes w/Puncture (-11 Orthstirr, +4 Stoked Dice, 10-12 damage)
-[X] In response to ranged attacks that get through Atgeir Bodyguard or if things get by that and Contested Movement is not working or available for some reason, use as many quick-drawn Shield Sacrifices (-3 Endurance on one Shield) as needed and/or up to two 122d6+7 Fortified and Reinforcedx107 Sway defenses (-110 Orthstirr each) as seems appropriate.
-[X] If we are without a shield at any point and would otherwise use a shield or Sway instead use a 136d6+7 Orthstirr Enhanced x119 Inertia-Arresting Throw with **1 Odr** added (-125 Orthstirr, **-1 Odr**) to both defend against and trap our opponent's sword in place.
-[X] If, and only if, we are targeted with more than three simultaneous attacks use our Sword Guards to defend against attacks 4 and 5.
-[X] If he uses any Contested Movement/Momentum-Reversal style counterattacks that force a specific stat roll, we will respond to them with Contested Movement by default, if he uses one in response to Contested Movement we will use one use of Fight of Your Life on it (+7d6), and if Hamr is included Adrenaline Rush should still apply as well.
-[X] Tactics – The idea here is to charge in with Threadcutter and hopefully hit him with something there, especially with the final Stoking Strike, and then, if that doesn't work just whittle him down (or, more likely, run his resources down) with fairly basic attacks. The key thing is that, if he attempts to attack us back, we either interpose our shield and set off an explosion at him, or counterattack with Atgeir Counter Stab and/or Contested Movement (we should get an Atgeir Counter Stab on each of his first 11 attacks, and a Contested Movement on any after the first that don't get stopped by Atgeir Bodyguard).

Kalman's face disappears from your sight as your gambeson slips up over your head. The red cloth of the padded shirt falls against the grass as you stand with only a white shirt to keep your upper body warm. Should the worst happen and you lose this fight, it'll be easy to tell when the red soaks through the white.

As your armor touches down, respect gleams in Kalman's eyes. His sword flicks around into a flat-facing salute as he bows before resuming his fighting posture. You respond with a nod of the head and swish of the atgeir as a shield finds itself flicked into your off hand.

The underside of the sun presses lips against the horizon as the streaks of light stretch across the land. Ever closer to the horizon, the moment the first glow of yellow vanishes is the moment blood shall start to spill.

The sun touches the earth and you waste no time as you through yourself bodily into action. Speed streaks off your limbs as you race across the grass-choked field, your foe moving as if underwater as sound breaks around your body.

Kalman readies his weapon as he waits unmoving, but it won't be enough to stop your blows from connecting. Sagaseeker crackles with lightning as you pull your arm back, for once wielding your atgeir with but a single hand, and swing with all your might.
Threadcutter rolls in spoiler at bottom
Stars watch as the sky darkens and blow after blow rains down upon the Magyar like a thunderstorm's tears. His saber rattles as it darts to and fro, eyes widening in ever-growing shock at your speed and ferocity. He can't keep up! Not much longer till-

Thunder breaks the sky as Sagaseeker surges into action. The saber meets a gruesome end as mortal iron concedes to Realized might. The snapped blade spins out in a spiraling arc as Sagaseeker advances.

As Sagaseeker slips through cloth, splits skin, and spills blood, the match ends after only a bare handful of moves. Not even a full exchange was had before the bout was decided.

Kalman staggers back as the hilt of his now-broken sword slips from limp fingers. Blood soaks through his side as his hands rush to staunch the flow, his mind struggling to process what just happened as he defaults to his base instincts.

He falls to the ground on hands and knees as his kinsmen—watching from the sidelines—rush to his side.

Just before you turn and leave, you catch Kalman's eyes one last time. Where once there was calm certainty and a little bit of arrogance, now there's just shock, horror, and a whole new level of appreciation.

'Good job, Halla,' you hide the smile as you make your way back to the ship. 'Teach him to speak of Attila so lightly!'

As you step off the field, though, you can't help but feel a slight surge from Sagaseeker. It seems he'll be waking back up soon.

AN: Well, sometimes the dice fall where they will.

No moratorium as it is getting a bit late.

1(Attack: 47+7=54 vs Defense: 47, Attacker Wins! Endurance Damage Dealt!)

What was he doing with defense rolls that low? It seems like he should have been able to pump out much higher numbers if he was peer.

I suspect he has a build up phase, like each test allows him to add his successes to following rolls, growing 'almost' exponentially.

Side note:
Jotun skin splitter would be the ability to bypass Damage Reduction, presumably.

Jotun shape-shifting seems obvious, take on the form of a Jotun (though likely without their divine nature as back up.)

Jotun Strike might be some kind of Jotun-themed related attack?

I think probably this one. We can hit real hard already and shapeshifting is nice but not really necessary, but the ability to penetrate defenses like DR is very good. The other two are also obviously fine, though. Any of the three will be awesome.

As for plan, I'm mostly pretty satisfied with this, though I could maybe be convinced to try and talk to Adalsteinn again rather than Magni Little-Rock...we bounced off talking to him last time but maybe persistence would pay off? I dunno. Anyway, here's the rest of it:

[X] Plan And Back Home
-[X] Asvir (3 Days, 15% chance of Bad Luck)
-[X] Talk to a Crewmember (1)
--[X] Trygve Ironoath
--[X] Get to know him and sound him out about his future plans with an eye towards potential recruitment if that's possible
--[X] Use social Tricks as needed to help with this (Goal Tell is likely the most immediately useful)
-[X] Talk to a Crewmember (2)
--[X] Magni Little-Rock
--[X] Also get to know him and sound him out about his future plans with an eye towards potential recruitment if that's possible
--[X] Again, use social Tricks as needed to help with this (Goal Tell is likely the most immediately useful)
-[X] Talk to a Crewmember (3)
--[X] Skavidr Skatasson
--[X] Talk with him and try and get information out of him in regards to who he might be working for.
--[X] Depending on how the conversation goes, we will likely also give him technically true answers about why we're not recruiting him ('it goes against the advice of a spirit I trust' after getting Blackhand to advise us against it, for example) or may confront him with having spotted him reporting on us (chalking it up to luck, mostly) and demand to know what's going on with that
--[X] Set up Raven's Unriddling in advance, and use Goal Tell spending 3 Odr to hopefully increase the amount of info given, use Frenzy if we can, and use our other social Tricks as needed and useful (particularly Lie Sense), and adding up to 6 Odr to the social roll involved

-[X] Note: We will take the time to actually recruit Hakon and Alvis, plus anyone from this turn's attempts who seems promising.

-[X] Nighttime: Spend all nights
--[X] Lodge with local landowners (Silver-Tongue Check, -1 Success for every 10 crew you have, +1 Morale)
--[X] Reassign all 8 shapeshift slots to Improved Attractiveness for these rolls.

Training:

-[X] (Research)
--[X] Create an improved Armory Pocket to store Emberguard in – 1 Research
--[X] Invite all new huskarls to the communal sparring – 1 Research
---[X] This is done on the final day and includes Hakon, Alvis, and anyone from this turn's options who we actually recruit

-[X] (Training) Fylga (506 xp to rank up)
--[X] Train Fylgja itself 186 xp (93xp)

Other:

-[X] (Shapeshifting Slots)
--[X] Unassign Improved Liver and one instance of Adrenaline Rush, assign Reduced Sleep x2
-[X] (Standing Orders)
--[X] Add a Standing Order for our Fylgja to use the Cool Off Trick on us whenever we feel a flash of intense, sudden, anger.

EDIT: Added some more Odr on Skavidr.

What was he doing with defense rolls that low? It seems like he should have been able to pump out much higher numbers if he was peer.

His roll was actually about equal to our average roll on the basic attacks we were making. We just rolled well and he didn't hedge his bets enough...our basic attacks must have been bigger than expected (likely in both dice and damage).

Were we ever told that he was a peer?

I mean... Vikings are generally accepted as badass combatants, and Halla is getting to the point where she's pretty impressive as vikings go, so....

IF said he was peer level, yeah. Apparently an overconfident one to not have some sort of defensive backup plan. We had, what, three of those? More?

Should we be worried about this? Did Halla do something dishonourable in this spar?
Nah, just not something that required drengskapr stuff.

To shed some light, Kalman really wanted to prove that he was stronger now—to his kin—and decided that the best way of doing that is by winning a fight when on the backfoot.

Given that we're trying to plan ahead for the ability to fight Steelfathers and not just lose, that sounds like it might be the most useful? Especially since Sagaseeker may be something we can pass from generation to generation.

I suspect it would not be sufficient for Steelfathers, but even if not that option seems real good to me. DR is potentially an issue for us, especially if we don't want to kill, so ways through it are solid.

Jotun shape-shifting seems obvious, take on the form of a Jotun (though likely without their divine nature as back up.)

I suspect shapeshifting would more let him shapeshift within the bounds of weapon, like to a sword or even a work knife. Jotun Strike is probably just More Damage.

Steelfathers just can't be hurt except by things that can overcome the Law of Steel, even a fully juiced up Finale can't put a scratch on them.

LMAO

You got us, IF, that was good.

It's also nice to see that level-appropriate encounters are not enforced and we can run into people both notably weaker and lot stronger than us. Adds a lot of verisimilitude to the Quest. It's not as if we're always getting the good end of things either - having recently encountered both Corpsemaker and a group of Jotuns trying to jump us, I think we know how it feels from both sides.

To shed some light, Kalman really wanted to prove that he was stronger now—to his kin—and decided that the best way of doing that is by winning a fight when on the backfoot.

God, what a poor guy.

Yeah, if I'm reading it right, this would let it get through the defence of a Jotun's hide which... seems really good given we literally couldn't scratch them before? (Is it enough to harm a Steelfather?) The others presumably let us strike as hard as a Jotun, or have shapeshifting, which are good, but I think the first one maybe be better.

@Imperial Fister, could we get a little more description of each option? Is Jotun-Skin Splitter a general piercing effect that allows Sagaseeker to overcome divine/supernatural invulnerability? How does that compare to what Jotun Strike offers?

(I'm not asking what gives us the best chance of hurting a Steelfather... just thinking it very hard.)

You heard that right, folks, NorseQuest has been nominated for Best Original Work! Go to this thread here and vote for NorseQuest in the poll—and any other nominees that you may also like—and let's see if we can't win us a contest!

edit: NQ's also been nominated for Best Ongoing Quest so go vote for that too!

Technically, he was apparently a peer in actual stats. It's just, well, as IF says he was not taking this as seriously as we were. Which had the results one would expect of not taking a peer level opponent seriously.

What does this mean exactly?
@Imperial Fister if you're inclined to answer this, could we get answers on the other two options as well? My guess is we have to pick without knowing, but if we can have more info that'd be great.
Jotun-Skin-Splitter allows Sagaseeker to punch through certain arbitrary 'you have to be this tall to ride' defenses, like Jotun skin and Rebuke.
Jotun-Shapeshifting allows Sagaseeker to have significantly more freedom in his shapeshifting, including going beyond the shape of a weapon.
Jotun-Strike makes Sagaseeker deal significantly more damage to those of Jotnar descent, like giants, dwarves, and other myriad creatures and peoples.

Yeah, I didn't see that when I posted. Honestly that's way more funny.

Interesting. I think Skin-Splitter still sounds best, though a bit less so than I was hoping...Shapeshift sounds a bit better and is a very close second. Strike doesn't appeal to me...we don't need specific bonuses against most of those foes, I don't think.

Can/Should we repair his sword?

If it didn't require much effort I'd be down for doing so, but I suspect it does and we just don't have the time. I'm sure he can afford repairs.

Yeah, I didn't see that when I posted. Honestly that's way more funny.

Yeah, it's been a while since we were underestimated.

Hmmm.

I feel like pulling some Shenanigans here.

@Imperial Fister, for a reward dice, can you tell me if Skavdir knows that Dorri is working with Drysalt? (I'm assuming he's Dorri's spy here, so if not then that's one very funny way to waste a reward dice.)

I was thinking just Forge-Weld it. We've never used it on-screen, and the sword doesn't seem that good if it broke after one hit.

I mean...Halla has Hamr 10, 3 instances of strength-boosting, and Sagaseeker has gotten scary. I dunno if it breaking is indicative of shoddy workmanship. And if it isn't, spot welding it right there is probably worse than doing nothing.

I don't know if we'd tell him even if he doesn't. For one thing, he's new in the Hading and might not care, for another he might just not believe us. Still, it'd be good to know.
