[X] [ULTHUAN] Cooperation

Because this is an unprecedented and maybe only chance to get all that sweet, sweet Waystone knowledge from the Asur.

[X] [BLOOD] Empire (Canal linking the Urskoy and Lynsk)

Because canals are good. Also, see Point One of modern Empire Naval Policy.

Couldn't it be negatively construed as being involved or having influence in imperial politicking and against her vows by potential detractors? Or am I misunderstanding the Articles rules on that?

Wizards aren't prohibited from having political influence. The Articles prohibit Wizards from obstructing in malice or for financial or political gain the rulings of the Emperor, and from seeking to overthrow him for those reasons.

Interestingly, this canal will also weaken Erengrad. Kislev would have less reason to trade as much through Erengrad when it can ship products from Praag down the Reik. Boyar Yevschenko, one of Erengrad's boyars, is an ally of Tzar Boris. He even seemed to know of Boris's plan to assassinate his father or start a civil war. That is what the streltsi were there to signify.
I daresay the loss of intra-Kislev trade, which could already much more easily be sent to the Empire, will be more than made up for by the increase in Empire trade.

Also, this is the first I've heard of Boris' buddy knowing about his assassination plans. Do you have a source?

No direct source but our meeting with Boris was in erengrad protected by a bunch of local streltsi, which kinda have to come from the local boyar.

I am a absolute fan of actually getting something out of this for personal gains.

I mean he'd know Boris was having a meeting with Mathilde, and might even know about it being about the tributaries. It's a bit of a stretch to say he therefore knew about Boris' plans.
I was about to say that but then realized that the boyar most likely knew that Tsarevich was preparing for civil war. Because, you know, thats what the show of force around the place was about.

If he didn´t outright know what Boris was about to chat Mathilde up about, he probably figured it out when the Tzar kicked it a little while later. He also probably did his best to ever forget anything like that talk happened, either out of personal loyalty or due to deducing that if Mathilde can kill Tzar on Tsarevich´s request, whats a boyar gonna do.

I mean, weakening Erengrad's merchants in exchange for strengthening the rest of the country might be a win-win from Boris' point of view. Kislev doesn't want a second Marienburg, with everything that implies.

She frowns. "Have they met Dwarves? Easier to convince the sun to stop turning than to tell them to stop building. But merchants are like that, think gold in a purse means more than steel in a hand. Perhaps Erengrad will go the way of Marienburg one day, guilds richer than boyars."

"Perhaps Kislevite pressure can help resolve the Marienburg situation and defang the trade families, and help keep the merchants in Kislev from growing too big for their boots."

It's a bit of a stretch but not a huge one, our order is very well known for being very good at silent assassinations and his dad died not shortly after by magical assassination.

If Boris isn't stupid (and I don't think he is) he told his allies before they figured it out themselfs.

There's no toes to be stepped on. Relationships with Kislev have barely improved since the era of Kattarin the Bloody, and the only international project between the Empire and Kislev of any substance is the Waystone Project.
Was rereading and found this, it's great that Boris' revival agenda and the proposed canal will establish strong relations with the Empire again, right before the next Everchosen too. I would say it's fortuitous timing since Ranald's trying to mend bridges with the Widow. ;)

Its not gonna weaken Erengrad any. The entire point of the canal network is that Empire merchants and Warfleets now have way to Sea of Claws that goes through Erengrad. Sure, It will be a whole lot easier to go from Kislev to Altdorf via boat, and thats gonna take some profit from Erengrad, but the traffic is two way.

It's amusing how the thread, after being denied their hunger for trains, had now settled on canalmania as the expression of their deep need for (industrial) revolution instead.

I wonder how long until the thread snaps due to the silk delays, and hires someone to make a spinning engine and power loom. That's how it starts you know. First some canals, then a little bit of spinning and weaving automation, and then your cutting the forests down for a bit more steam.

I think the Streltsi being present was indicative of Boris setting up the chessboard for a civil war if Mathilde didn't agree to help, since the update clearly mentions Boris building alliances already. So the Boyar might not have been told about the exact plans, but he would know something was up since he was being actively courted by the Tsarevich.

It's mostly also the idea that the local boyar would have been informed about Boris meeting with a prominent member of the grey order shortly before his dad mysteriously died in his sleep.

But then, is Mathilde's Grey Order-ness the first thing on the forefront of the mind of anyone who isn't already looking for an assassin? She's got a lot of achievements under her belt, most of them befriending various peoples and killing various "always chaotic evil" kinda entities and embarking on ambitious endeavors for everyone's good that tend to succeed. Is she the first person you'd suspect of killing the Tzar in his sleep if you didn't know she killed the Tzar in his sleep?

By the way, speaking of economic plans involving Kislev:
@Boney
I have a Question; can we not buy metals from Erengard and sell to Eonir via sea of claws? Kislev has metals and we can use ships. Not as good as selling from the Empire but having connection to Kislev proably is not a bad thing either. And we can either broker or do import-export deal from some port along the Sea of Claws. Is this an option?
This was and remains a good idea, but with the proposed canal we could do more than just broker deals between Kislev and Laurelorn. We could actually ship Empire ores to Erengard, and from there by sea to Tor Lithanel. This will create further ties between the Eonir, Kislev, and the Empire, and for once the EIC is actually well placed since those ores are going to come from the eastern Empire.

...Are there serious mining operation in Ostermark? Will we see the return of Baronet Willus Husserl of the Ostermark League?

If your already supporting Boris yeah, kinda.
Boris would not have been shy about his father being a problem...

"Perhaps Kislevite pressure can help resolve the Marienburg situation and defang the trade families, and help keep the merchants in Kislev from growing too big for their boots."

She narrows her eyes at you thoughtfully. "Perhaps," she eventually says. "Will perhaps have a word or two with my sisters. Tzar will only care if it turns into war, but the Tzar is far away. Perhaps we could involve ourselves in the matter, and in doing so build useful ties with the west."

"The Magister Patriarch of my Order has taken a keen interest in the Marienburg situation, and has the ear of the Supreme Patriarch. He would be very open to reaching an agreement on the matter. And the Empress would be just as happy to build new ties with our eastern allies."

"Powerful titles," she says thoughtfully, "and interesting words. I will put them in the right ears."

You nod, smiling. Just a few planted seeds, but they could end up sprouting in all sorts of useful ways.
Also, can I just say that I love how for anyone who follows Mathilde's exploits, they'll see a mastermind who's making 4D Chess moves years in advance. There's so much foreshadowing in this quote for example. The Expedition was the first real foray Mathilde made into Kislev's politics and here we are 4 years later, setting up the start of an united Order faction with Kislev/Empire/Karaz Ankor and dismantling Marienburg's dominance in one fell swoop. The planted seeds has grown quite fruitful :D

Chancellor Otto: She's a certified diplomatic genius!
Algard: ... Maybe we should add a Mathilde's School of Diplomacy to the Grey Order's teaching courses ...

Don't forget setting up a bunch of trade with Laurelorn to tie it to the Empire! The only prominent Old World nations she has no ties with are Bretonnia, Athel Loren, and Marienburg, I think. (I'm almost certainly forgetting something, geography hard)

There is also Estalia (and their less important cousins the Tileans), plus whatever the Border Princes develop into.

We obviously need to build a canal across the Neck, and we need to make the Starks pay for it !
Wait, wrong setting. The thread discussion had me thinking we were about to invent gunpowder and economically revitalise the post-Targaryen Kingdoms.
