Yeah, I don't think this boat is gonna redefine battleships. Like, I'm fairly sure that this hull configuration is technologically a dead end.
It's not a technological dead end. It's more like the technology of this time makes this design well-suited for it.

When you think about it, a design like the Sovereign-class only works because the technology like phaser-strips allows for a hull configuration like that to give much greater weapons coverage.

The Bulwark isn't a technological dead end because you could probably apply more advanced weaponry and even warp configurations to it and still have it kick ass. It won't be ideal, but it will still be quite effective.

What makes the Bulwark so distinctive compared to more canon ships designs is how minimalist the warp and secondary hull aspects are, but that's specifically because of the total war situation we find ourselves in. A major overhaul of the design that includes a secondary hull and some utility features could make the design less war-specialized without giving up all of the industry that went into building the saucer and warp coils.

Worth remembering that Starfleet doesn't have a lot of ships in general. Even if the Bulwark isn't ideal for postwar needs, you have to make do with what you have, and the Bulwark is going to be one hell of a defensive deterrent.

Pretty sure the Royal Navy doesn't exist anymore.

Somewhat relevant to all this navy talk, this is apparently something the federation does \/

Federation Naval Patrol

The Federation Naval Patrol was a naval organization concerned with the patrol of Federation planets, specifically through the use of water vessels designed to patrol seas and oceans. As a result of having a childhood fascination with stories about the ocean and ancient sailing ships, Tom Paris...

Really, the ThunderSpite could probably be fairly decently converted to a more balanced peacetime vessel. Take out some of the 'extraneous' pulse cannon assemblages/torpedo silos and you could probably fit some small lab spaces in there, which is really all she needs. She won't ever be fast enough to be a first responder without fully redoing the warp system and replacing the current nacelle arrangement, but we have other ships for that.

If we were converting it to a peacetime vessel, I would actually imagine turning it into a pure system defense craft. Or even simply use it as an escort for a more dedicated science-y vessel so it can get by with less guns.

The bulwark class is also a pretty significant departure from canon. Instead of the NX being the heaviest thing humanity can contribute, we have something at least twice as strong.

It's like contributing to the war with frigates versus heavy cruisers, we're going to be a much more equal partner in the initial coalition of planets.

The more people keep talking about this ship being a technological dead end, scrapping it after the war, or things along those lines.

The more a part of me wants to vote to continually refit it throughout the rest of this quest.

Article:
Warspite was the sixth Royal Navy ship to bear the name. It likely originated from an archaic word for woodpecker, 'speight'; with the implication that, during the age of sail the war-speight would peck holes in her enemies' wooden hulls.[2]

Y'know what? Let's keep naming warship classes after animals. Behold, the terrifying flying beast of Earth: The Woodpecker-class. :V
