Yeah, this is something we should keep in limited numbers and produce only in time of war and when a colony gets large enough to warrant one for defense. Homeworlds too when the Federation proper forms but I doubt anyone will be letting us put one of those over there homeworld willingly anytime soon.
I think this being a purely wartime ship and not persisting into peace would be better. There's no real need for this ship in peacetime other than a military doctrine of fleeting in being.

One thing I just noticed, this ship only has 160 people on it. For the biggest ship ever produced by United Earth that is really good, the automation on the ship must be something to behold.
This Battleship is actually bigger that the Ushaan and Reliant in terms of mass, so our first ship bigger than something in the previous quest.

What would this mean, scrapping the ship once the war is over?

We can refit it to more generalist roles, so we're not at least wasting all this Industry once the fighting has stopped. It's a good ship, no need to ditch it.

Well, so long as it isn't yet obsolete, there's "not having to design and build new ones the next time someone decides that starting a war with us is a good idea" as a reason.

Really I see them being kept over important worlds.

They'll be obsolete in terms of warp factor, but they're a good defence incase some nutjobs try the same trick the romulans did.

I could see them lasting a few decades in that role.

Nothing wrong with a fleet in being. As I said earlier, if we set up a supply depot close to fringe colonies, the battleship can just sit pretty there and promise a comprehensive spanking to any would be raider with designs on the colonies near her.

Future refits with newer warp engines should hopefully bump its warp factor up a bit.

We should not scrap these and instead use them until to outdated to compete with our peers.

Idealy they are used as fleet in being. I pray that we do not scrap or refit these ships for explorer duty. Leting them sit over earth as a visible reminder to others to not start shit with humanity.

As someone who has been unable to keep up with the thread, why wasn't there an Internals vote? Even as a pure military ship you could install a "citadel" of polarized armor around the warp core or antimatter or whatever so that even a crippling ambush is likely to have most of the crew survive rather than atomizing.

Or is this a result of the heavy gun load?

Exploration seems more important than some cold war of just putting ships in orbit with nothing to do.

We can certainly have a home defense fleet, but dedicating the entire class to nothing else? That's just a sad, slow death.

Sayle talked about why.
