Yeah, this is something we should keep in limited numbers and produce only in time of war and when a colony gets large enough to warrant one for defense. Homeworlds too when the Federation proper forms but I doubt anyone will be letting us put one of those over there homeworld willingly anytime soon.

Would prefer to stay away from the most militaristic options, and UES Brasilia should ideally be a ship of peace to showcase Earth's ideals rather than a ship of war. Thunderchild is a bit silly and whimsical but it could be worse I guess.

Thunderchild is also the perfect way for us designers to slip in a very fitting pop culture reference (in this case, War of the Worlds) without appearing too ridiculous. Warspite is also fitting due to the real-life ship's motto (which translates roughly to 'I despise the harshness of war') slotting in quite nicely with the Coalition's (and eventually the Federation's) general ideology.

Well, glasses be tipped towards those who voted for 4 torpedoes, since our phaser cannons are less than we hoped for.

I have to admit, I had to lookup Thunderchild to see why it was so popular. And I don't think naming a ship designed because of the very real attack on Earth, after a ship from War of the Worlds, is really proper. I would take pretty much anything over it.

Pity the new energy weapons underperformed but torpedoes really are a nice upgrade. I do wonder what it would be to refit the NX and Stingray with new weapons tech. Though that industry cost means not many will be built.

Edit- A fairly small increase on defensive rating vs the NX and lower Engineering and Science scores make this an interesting class.

I would rather have Thunderchild over Brazilia because I really don't like the idea of having the design simply for vengeance for the Romulan atrocity.

As others have said, Brazilia should be the name of a ship of peace or mercy.

Oh, thank you for this context. Changing vote.

Also, I hope our next science/diplo ship is called 'UES Brazilia', not a combat ship.

I admit, i very much do Not want the name ship of this class to be Brazilia. Having one of them name for it is one thing, but this is not a ship of peace. And engraving the name of a tragedy on a ship meant for war is a terrible thing to do to that ships spirit.

That said, i'll not deny the masses there desire to grandstand and wave the loss in the face of others. It seems poorly done to me, but what do i know.

Let loose the Hounds of War, and may this mighty Cerberus unleash itself.

Warspite is one of two battleships to sink a submarine (by her aircraft in WW2, the other being Dreadnought by ramming in WW1). This thing is hunting cloaked ships.

And I'm okay with that idea, that is why I also voted for Warspite at the same time. I just don't think the name of a fictional ship can truly give the propriety deserved after the attack on Earth.

Look, I know she's going to end up named Brasilia due to circumstances, but I like H. G. Wells.

[X] UES Thunderchild

Edit; Although, I do like the idea of explicitly giving her the name of a famous old warship as well. Gets the point across for what she's here for.

[X] UES Warspite

On further rhought to justify my naming bias here, much as naming her after who she'll be avenging might be cathartic, this is Star Trek humanity, the Brasilians might not be too happy to be the namesake of a ship built only for war.

Hope we get a science ship choice for the founding of the federation then.
