I will say, I'm curious as to how "It's not your blood" ties in with this.

But my brain power seems to be depleted at the moment, I need to wait until the REVELATIONS return.

I'm pretty dubious Solrun knows anything about a specific weird martial style. Our best bets are Sten and maybe Heima Smiles. We can see about asking Sten along with asking him about the Price of Steel, I suppose, though the two subjects feel a bit unrelated. Heima would definitely be a social action, though.

Oh absolutely, she probably wouldn't. My thought is that we'd be asking for leads on the metal mountain in mythology. As well as possibly what spirits are known as information-brokers so we could try summoning one and trading for information if that does not own out.

If we sort of think if attacking the problem from two ends, where one is the meditation side (which might be enough alone given we got a vision of the mountain) and the other is learning the underlying mythology, I think that should work.

Speaking to an actual practitioner at some point would be handy for learning more of the canonical moves of the Style, though. Bringing up the mountain with Sten is s also a good idea.

My other annoying suggestion is we should make a set of arms and armour for our farmhand whose name I forget (Kurt) since he fought well in the battle. Would be great to get another huscarl and he deserves it

I mean, we can just ask Dorri to give him one of the armor we make as part of the deal. probably won't be too much of a problem. even if it doesn't work out we can make one extra in the mass production armor. Im not sure we wanna use a full action for it

Have we already tried inverting Standstill?

This is part of how we got TSS...it's not a new Hugareida, though, so melding with it may well make us stationary, not fast. Assuming inverting even works like that without a martial style involved...

Maybe once it's Summer and we can ask her questions again as part of seidr class.

Yeah, assuming he has any idea how any of that works.

We probably should at some point, but with mass production, and Work Dice are tight, and I'd like to get him Grand stuff. This upcoming Winter seems valid. WE could do it sooner if we skipped the fertility ritual, but I think he'd prefer we did that now and the armor a little later.

We could also forge some armor for that guy we accidentally killed in the raid by dodging instead of blocking.

This is wildly expensive (since we have to provide the Iron). Doing something like this for our farmhand is reasonable, for this guy not so much. Maybe something cheaper. We could mass produce him a Mail-Necked Helm, maybe.

we definitely gotta wait for Blackhand for that. the guy missed enough, we can't have him miss Halla embracing her legacy
I dunno about using full actions on this kind of experimentation...we want an idea of what that does before we start burning actions on it.
I mean, we can do it while crafting something we gotta craft anyway

Yule is resolved as part of Summer Turn 1, right? My thought was we could roll it into a pair of crafting action then. We want general gifts, plus I was thinking maybe an arm ring apiece for the lads? Which does not precisely fit into the crafting economy, but we know we can make two paired arm rings as part of one crafting, so I am like 99% sure IF will say okay if we use two projects to make four individual-but-identical-ones.

Then the second crafting action is our family gifts and Kurt's stuff, plus an exploration action for the ashes-scattering trip, and our free social is talking to Sten about Steel on the way home.

Maybe once it's Summer and we can ask her questions again as part of seidr class.

She lives with us now, right?

I'd check with Fister, but it seems like we could do it for a research dice or for free based on my recollection of when I was asking whether we could ask Steinarr about something. Probably for free honestly given we could apparently ask about Crowfeeder for free, but for honour's sake I'd give it a dice.

My impression was that Dorri was arming and armoring his own people, not literally everyone in the Valley.

I mean, we can do it while crafting something we gotta craft anyway

Sure. I was arguing against using an action to give a random guy a Wondrous sword that we also did that with.

So. We have a huge number of things we want to do over the Summer, some more urgent than others, and probably none of them can afford to be crafting actions next turn. We want to, in order of priority, IMO:

1. Go to Gotland to spread Steinarr's ashes.
2. Do a Divination to help determine who is behind Steinarr's death.
3. Make a Cover for our Book.
4. Do the needed actions and Work Die stuff to have a Tournament on Summer 3. We need to do a fair portion of this next turn if we want it to happen. This is 2 Actions and 90 Work Dice.
5. Do a Fertility Ritual for Kurt and Haydis (they want this a lot more than they want items, IMO).
6. Visit the Heart of the Hading with Blackhand once he is back.
7. Grab at least one experience to try and finish the Bridge and Burl thing.
8. Make several items for ourselves which are actually medium-urgent to increasing our combat prowess (Greaves and Gauntlets, Fleinns)
9. At some point, increase our Workshop level to 7 so we can mass produce Grand Items.
10. speaking of which, keep up our obligations to Dorri and craft some stuff for him.

Adding complications, the need for Work Dice means we are strongly rewarded for doing all the crafting we want to do on a single turn out of the three (since we can assign Work Dice away from Workshop on the other turns).

Getting this to work is...logistically difficult. We just don't have time for extra crafting actions in there. Not this coming turn if we want to do the divination and go on the Gotland Trip anyway (and we really do want to do both those this coming turn). Talking to Sten is still on the itinerary, though, as Socials are a separate thing.

Next Winter we can afford the spare Work Dice a bit better.

She does, but she's busy for the Winter. During the Summer, which includes next turn, we can do it with one of our free three questions a turn without bothering her when she's busy with other stuff, which seems like a better and less invasive idea.

Oh, definitely no actions on it. But we can probably test out Experimentation-Based Forging next turn.

Crafting stuff next turn is, as I go into above, probably not much of a thing. The next turn after that is more plausible.

Ooh! A thought occurs. After we make a Sunfire Trick we need to test it on steel.
I know it'd kind of be anticlimactic, but if at the very least it slightly melts steel we'll have a way to at least damage a SteelFather (theoretically).

Feels like a divination could logically be rolled into the trip, given it's going to be a mini-arc? Doing a divination for our father's killer as we're scattering his ashes or shortly after honestly feels like it would be more magically powerful anyway. Possibly even talking to Sten too actually, thinking back to how the planning was structured on the last trip. The Work Dice stuff is... honestly not something I'm engaged with at all, I trust you to figure it out whatever we do. You created this system, you get to deal with it! 😅

Fertility ritual seems like a research action, and we just made some stuff for Dorri.

Like, I see where you're coming from here, but I think we want to do some crafting anyway since I like making Yule gifts for everyone. We could maybe swap out arm rings for all the Huscarls with a cover for the book and one of the items you mention for ourselves, though, if we're spending an action making everyone gifts. Waiting until next winter does not really work, if we want the gift to be a reward for his bravery - thereby making him consider advancing his social standing by becoming our huscarl - then it has to be sooner rather than later. I think this Yule is already about as late as we can realistically get away with.

Feels like a bit of a "remember to see the wood for the trees" kinda thing - the stuff you're talking about is important, to be sure, but I think not so much that some of it can't wait a turn.

Fair enough then, next turn is what I was proposing anyway.

Potentially, if it's a mini-arc with places for those...knowing more about the trip structurally would really help with planning, to be honest. And the Work Die stuff is normally not a big deal, but it is right now given how many things we need to spend it on in the next couple of turns with the new uses IF has given it.

Fertility ritual seems like a research action, and we just made some stuff for Dorri.

We need to make stuff for Dorri every season and this is a list for the whole Summer. Per IF, the fertility ritual is 1, 3, 9, or 27 Work Dice.

I think he'd rather our Yule Present be the fertility ritual, frankly. If we can fit in making him armor as well, that's another matter but if we need to pick, it's the Ritual.

A lot of it can wait a turn, it's totally true. The Work Die costs can't and neither can the divination I don't think, and that already makes doing a bunch of crafting next turn non-viable if we can't use the trip itself to do the Divination.

@Imperial Fister for planning purposes, how is the Gotland Trip gonna be structured? Will we have the opportunity to do things like Divinations during the trip as part of it?

1. Go to Gotland to spread Steinarr's ashes.
2. Do a Divination to help determine who is behind Steinarr's death.

so let me try and make a base idea

we got 3 actions(aside from social) each turn, as well as 110 work dice, 40 of which are required for farm work. we can probably do the ritual next turn and should definitely do the workshop as it has immediate result. we probably also want to do an experience capturing as there are two researches it allows, both are rather urgent. we can probably spare about 50 work dice for the tournament prep, doing the bulk of the early work

as for actions, we can do the divination first as it doesn't have lot of requirement. we can also do one of the actions for the tournament and put on the cover for our book.

turn 2 we can do the Gotland trip assuming Blackhand is back. this includes visiting Asvir as well which is good for the tournament. we dedicate the work dice we can to complete the tournament, and if we can spare a few for the workshop then do a crafting action. if we don't do it, we can likely fit in the Hading Heart, depending on how busy it makes the narrative. we might also want to go to the Danelaw in this trip, to tell Asva and maybe Gabriel of Steinnar's passing.

then turn 3, we do the last tournament action and remaining work dice to start it, as well as visiting the Heart if not done before. if we can't do the last action the same turn as the tournament we can move it back to turn one instead of the cover thing(Which is more ong term

so let me try and make a base idea

There are several issues with the details of our Work Dice expenses here, plus we want to do the Gotland Trip next turn, I think. Better splits it from the tournament narratively and makes more sense (Halla would not be delaying that). I'm a bit tired to break them all down in detail, though. I do not want to make a spreadsheet about this or anything, and neither does anyone else.

To be clear, I do have a fairly comprehensive plan, it's just a tad fiddly and I'm explaining why crafting stuff next turn specifically is harder to fit in than it might be. Not impossible, but tricky and both only one action's worth and very wasteful if we can't do the Divination on the trip. If we can do the divination on the trip it's a lot more viable.

as well as 110 work dice, 40 of which are required for farm work.

We need more like 64 for farm work, actually, to actually be using the whole farm. We can go down to more like 45 in an emergency, but we'd rather not if we don't have to.

Should we do the Fertility Ritual at 9 dice or 27 dice?
Stigmar, thankfully, steps in as he clambers over a rock—his equipment rattling with his movement, "Bearbreaker's got a fine nose. If anyone's been nearby, he'll be able to sniff 'em out."

"Huh," Vagn regards Abjorn in a new light, "so, like, does that mean you can...?"

"I can," Abjorn nods.

Vagn clicks his tongue against his teeth as he grimaces, "Alright, then."

"What are you two talking about?" Stigmar stares at them, confusion writ in his eyes.

"I'll tell you when you're older," your words draw a round of giggles from the others and further confusion from poor Stigmar. To be honest, you weren't really sure what they were talking about either, but fortunately you don't have to explain yourself as you arrive at the herd.
What does this mean?

There's a lot of uses of being able to sniff extremely well (looks at dogs), but I'm not sure which use Vagn is referring to. Ability to sniff out who you have been with in the bed (Abjorn knows who Tryggr has been with..) ? What you ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Your emotions? The territory of animals? Your age?

We can't really afford 27 Dice very well, and 9 should really be sufficient for the vast majority of cases.

What does this mean?

His sexual history and proclivities, likely. Especially given the follow-up. It's possible Vagn is sleeping with someone socially disapproved of...he might have a boyfriend, for example. Something like that is my bet.

Might have already been mentioned, since i'm only barely skimming the discussion, but reading this made me think: what if its that you can't do it to yourself, only to others or even specifically your kids; you can use it to start a bloodline limit sort of deal, but not for yourself?

Personally I'm not sure that makes sense? IF implied this is things that people in the Valley are already doing in a more roundabout way, and if I'm gonna be honest a lot of the Norse mechanics seem to give you the power and then trickle down to the descendants. So having something purely for the next generation seems incongruous to people developing it much.

To reply to all of this as one thing: fair enough, basically. I think there's a way we might be able to make it work, depending on how the amounts of dice shake out, and how the trip is structured. But everything you say sounds reasonable to me and I take the broader point that it takes a lot of fiddling to make it work out. Getting another huskarl would be nice, and I think giving Kurt a helm and armour and inviting him to train with us if he wishes might get us a shot at that, since it's an obviously token of martial honour and esteem rather than a general gift, but we'll see...

In terms of extra work dice, one thing I definitely think we want to do on our trip is take an opportunity to visit one or more of the nearest trade ports that see a lot of thralls being sold - someone is bound to know the name of one nearby, especially since Agder has probably had slave traders sniffing around to buy some of our new captives after the raid. The highest priority item here would be finding a monk who knows Latin, but we could see about purchasing a couple of thralls, freeing them immediately on purchase, and then giving them the choice of taking their chances or coming back with us to work for wages as free farmhands? That could provide more Work Dice for the farm and also feels like a vaguely morally good thing to be doing.

The thing is, Kurt is kind of bad at fighting. Based on the bonus he was getting during the Revenge Raid he appears to be at Upper Bottom...for comparison, this is where Aki was at before he left, so at the age of 14 or so. The Orthstirr gain from the revenge raid and better gear would help with that but probably not enough to jump him multiple categories (I suspect the two together get him to Lower Middle). Besides which, if he wanted that life he'd be living it...being a professional warrior is not hard in Norse society. Trying to recruit him as a huskarl thus seems incorrect.

To be clear, I still think we want to give him some armor and a weapon, because he did fight bravely and well in the battle and we'd like him better equipped (and doing at least part of that this Yule seems reasonable), but not as a recruitment tool.

Buying a single thrall for Latin knowledge seems valid. I'm a bit reluctant other than that, but instantly freeing some isn't crazy talk. I suspect hiring a free farm hand is a better Food to Work Die ratio, but Thralls might be a bit easier to acquire, depending. and yeah, freeing them is probably a good call morally...especially female thralls of the younger, prettier, sort given Randi's story might be in Halla's mind.
