We need to know how he did that and how to defend against it

I don't want the Heirs of Blackhand to die out because we pissed off a Finn

That's fair. I suspect some of our existing seidr stuff would work, but finding out for sure would be good.

There's an old actual Catholic prayer 'From the fury of the Northmen God deliver us!' (or something like that) about the Vikings. So there's a joke there about what we're scared of.

Ok I'm guessing that undoing the knot will release his soul then

Probably. I think Sten's plan may be to instead add more knots as he gathers more souls, though.

Also, side note, but in terms of anti-Hooknails tactics: If we do wind up using TSS, we can use Scouring Cleanse on his chain before we use the other actions on him, and probably should if it's still operational. I dunno how practical doing that is outside of TSS, but it should work fine if he's frozen in time, and if he still has that thing (and I bet he does) it's probably a pretty solid defensive item we'd want out of commission.

Why not have them release the hostages and swear to leave in peace and not return for x years? Possibly require them to leave some loot behind?

Well, for one thing, we're Fated to fight Hooknails, so that would likely fail for some reason. For another that lets them off scott free for the stuff they've done already, which may well include killing Dorri's son. I don't want to put him in that position where he has to let his son's killers go without a fight...that seems likely to end badly (either he breaks the deal or hates us...both would be bad).

And finally, we don't have to. That would be a much better deal for them than the currently proposed one, but we have almost all the leverage...why let them get a better deal than we have to?

won't be better to just go for a 1v1? or a few of them? its less messy and more epic then mass combat, and will probably be better to write about for IF

Solrun might know how to defend against what Sten did. and if she doesn't Blackhand might

That's almost certainly what will happen because the 'equal numbers' thing is a pretty obvious trap. Our side could field Dorri and Logi as two of those, among other terrifying people, and he's gotta know that. It's in the plan because if he did accept it, it'd be great for us, to give us the ability to back down to what we actually think will work, and because if he thinks he's spotted the trap he'll get cocky and think he's smarter than us, which is good.

Realistically, he's too smart to fall for it, so we probably wind up doing duels.

  • [X] Plan Yes, a 'Fair Fight'
-[X] Suggest that perhaps this could be settled with a fair fight, starting with offering to fight them with an equal number of our own people, but being willing to negotiate on that point and agree to some number of duels. If they win they are free to return back to their ships without the rest of our forces interfering as long as they do so directly.
-[X] Make it very clear that any deal we make, we will first swear an oath to abide by the deal if they release all hostages without further harm, they will also swear to abide by it, then they will release the hostages, then we will carry out the deal. This order of events is not negotiable.
-[X] Again use Cool Off and other Social Tricks as necessary, use Frenzy if we can, and use up to 3 Odr if that seems useful or necessary.

And here, we, go.

I will admit, I'm a little worried that the failure to specifically try to split Sharkmouth and split their unity was missed in the revised plan, but, well, it is what it is, that's on me for missing it.

Yeah, I actually completely didn't see the second part of your idea (I only saw your post pre-edit). I probably should've included that. Ah, well, I think the basic idea works either way.

As you consider the options that lay before you, a certain idea comes to mind. Thousands of years of stories of heroes and legends flash across your mind's eye as a smile comes to your lips. A duel to decide it all, wouldn't that be nice?

Besides, he has to know that he and you are fated to fight. Really, the moment he stepped foot on Hading soil, it could only end one way.

The chains grow ever-tighter as Fate balances on the edge of a sword.

As you start to speak, the cutting edge of the sword splits Fate in two. As if prompted by some high power, skilled, slender fingers work together to weave a web of stories from the strands of possibility. From inspiration comes action and from action comes reward.

"A duel between you and I," you begin with a fire in your chest, your words sounding twisted to your ears. "A duel to decide it all. You win and you go free, as long as you leave the hostages behind. If I win, you and your men will be taken prisoner."

Hooknails eyes you for a long time, unaware of the turmoil going on inside of your soul. That wasn't what you wanted to say! Not at all! You wanted to offer mass combat between an equal number of warriors, a battle you could stack in your favor with raw skill and experience. Not...

A feminine voice whispers in the back of your mind, a voice both sickeningly familiar and terrifyingly foreign. A voice of feathers and spears, of guidance and servitude. A voice filled with potential life and certain death in equal amounts. 'Strength has its unspoken prices, Daughter of Ash, and all who climb the steps must pay it.'

There is no opportunity to ask questions, for the voice vanishes just as suddenly as she appeared. Instinctively, you feel her travel north, towards where your family rests.

Hooknails tilts his head to the side, "If we are to duel, then it will be to the death."

AN: Something happened here. Something odd, something wrong, and something ever so right—all at the same time.

No moratorium. I'll give you a combat planning update should you decide to go through with it.

... Well then, interesting.

[X] "I wouldn't have it any other way."

If the Eyes of the Gods are on us, let's not disappoint them.

I suspect that was either a Valkyrie on her way to pick up Steinarr giving us a pep talk, or that branch of the Family's Fylgjurkona having a message for us, either way, the Time is Right.

That sounds like the Morrigan, maybe? We haven't heard from her in a while. Or a Valkyrie, I guess?

Either way, this is Fated, I don't think trying to weasel out is the smart play.
