I think assuming that Alfred want these guys brought back is probably misunderstanding his reason got sending us in the first place?

We're a semi-deniable option, a reminder of why the Dangled is paid, without political allegiances. There were a bunch of guys in that hall who were stronger than we were, and Wessex is not currently at war - he has other commitments for his firces, sure, but we were not chosen due to a lack of sixty strong men who could be sent away for a week.

We were chosen because it's politically inconvenient for Alfred to attack patriotic English Thanes on behalf of the hated Danes (or so his enemies can spin it) - doubly so because of the involvement of Carolingian cultivators. If he sent Thanes, then Knights and Thanes will shed blood in war on English soil under royal orders, not a good precedent given the open tensions at court, and if he sent Knights, it's the same thing, and it worsens the disquiet from his Earls about Frankish influence.

All this is to say, if he had his choice, Alfred probably does not want these guys coming back, or to pass judgement on them. It will cause murmurings and at court. I think that's tough, personally, because we're not his executioner, but suffice to say I don't think Alfred's nose will be out of joint if we give these guys what is effectively exile. It neatly solves a few problems for him.

I don't disagree with this reasoning, but I also don't think any of that is a reason he doesn't want them given back to him in a situation where he has all the power needed to finesse the situation in his favor while looking magnanimous.

Eh. He can easily 'ransom' them from us without causing any real problems even if he wants to keep things a bit quieter. And if he didn't want us talking about the job, he should've said so.

Tbh i'd rather offer them thralldom or allow them to ransom themselves, after we have looted everything.

If they have a secret stash then they give it up for freedom. If they dont we get money by selling them as thrallls.

doing some math over ransom money:

15 norsemen*5 oz silver=75 oz silver. divided between 60 men its 1.25 oz of silver per man.
less if some Norsemen died.
double that, with 10 silver ransom, is still a negligible sum of 2.5 oz.

but further harms relations with our kinsman and generally bad reputation for us. even if we went for the 20 silver ransom it would give us 5 silver. still barely anything in the general earnings from this trip. honestly even compared to the usual amounts we deal its barely anything.

so what about this:
[X] let them go without a ransom out of respect for their warriors and for our kin

[X] let them go without a ransom out of respect for their warriors and for our kin

A reminder that the Norse don't necessarily think as you would.

Ransoms are the done thing, because warriors have worth. What does it say, that someone thinks so little of you that they couldn't give a shit about what you do, not even making the barest effort to gain some future advantage?

Just do the small ransom and get over it. Making hilariously arrogant power plays can be funny, but we're not that sort of person.

[X] 10oz per man
[X] Give the Thanes a choice between thralldom and Alfred's justice
[X] Thoroughly loot the sea-fort
[X] Go get to know your Kinsman

Or, alternatively, make it a reasonable ransom and then PAY THE RANSOM of our kinsmen as their kinsman.

The closest to that option would be the 5 oz silver ransom.

[X] 8oz per man
[X] Give the Thanes 4 choice between thralldom, join your crew, Alfred's justice and, be release as farmer for life.
[X] Thoroughly loot the sea-fort
[X] Go get to know your Kinsman

My new write in.

[X] Give the Thanes a choice between thralldom and paying a ransom for freedom, after you are done looting

Give us ur secret stash.

Note that as only your most recent post with a vote in it is counted by the vote tallying, this is the only thing you're being counted as voting on. If you don't care what we do with the thanes or spend our time on, that's fine, just noting it in case you weren't aware.
its not that I don't care, but all of the leading options on the others I agree with, so any of them winning is fine for me. I would have apprpoval voted on my write in to, after confirming its fine, but it seems its too late for it and Im not sure approval voting is allowed here

Hey Imperial Fister I'd like to spend a reward dice to learn about any universal traits or rules of spirit stats
in other words things all spirit stats share

There are three commonalities that can be seen in most—but certainly not all—cultivation systems.

The first is that they have a way to strengthen the body. For the Norse, this is their Hamr. For the Carolingians/Christians, this is their Soma.

The second is that they have a way to enhance the mind. For the Norse, this is their Hugr. For the Carolingians/Christians, this is their Psyche.

The third is that they have a way to interact and interface with the greater world. For the Norse, this is their Fylgja. For the Carolingians/Christians, this is their Pneuma.
