Up to the QM really. I suspect there are a variety of obstacles to overlogging the Hading, but getting some extra out of it is far from impossible. @Imperial Fister can we allocate Work Dice to get more Goods for trade like this, and what would the problems and consequences be?

Yeah you're right, it would be good to check.

It might be a case where the Hading is seem as a kind of commons and overlogging it is frowned upon. Although given the region was recently depopulated, it might be that there isn't enough demand on the the timber resources for this. There might also be issues with local spirits getting upset and needing to be placated if you just go clear-cutting a bunch of trees at once in old-growth forest.

Could be.
Could also be that his ship has worse cargospace/rowers ratio.
Or that his ship is too big and he couldn't get all the rowers needed on short notice.
Or that the speed of more rowers focussed on one ship is more valuable to him in this situation.

If we are gonna ask him about tips anyway, asking him to join us is free.
Oh, we will 100% ask, I'm just saying I think him joining us is unlikely.

We could possibly ask if he wanted to sail somewhere together, with us both taking our own ships and forming a little flotilla. That would certainly be helpful for us to learn navigation by his example.

Although given the situation here is somewhat desperate, it might make more sense to spread our bets. If he can pick two likely ports which normally have grain for export, Tuskpuncher sails to one, and we sail to the other, then we'd have effectively doubled our chances of buying enough grain.

The Hading is also full of dangerous shit that might well object to too much logging even leaving the spirits aside.

I think we should definitely split up if we can. We'd need to get very lucky to even find enough Food for sale in a single location to feed the whole valley. Splitting up to cover more ground is basically a requirement, I think. And Halla is actually a pretty fair sailor, what with Sailing 4, so she'll be okay with most navigation stuff barring things going really wrong.

Also possible, just want to note:
The 22 person number thrown around would get us 1 person per bench, the minimum to reasonable use.
We can fit 2 per bench, which would get us more rowers -> faster rowing.

We'll see if we can. If we can, sure why not.
Though we could also get multiple ports serially.

True. If we can get 45 people total (the maximum) without scuppering any other expeditions we will do so. Though I'm doubtful given the number of people in the valley and the fact that some are probably already off raiding.

True. Depends on whether the likely ports are, like, right next to each other or in opposite directions and how many people we can get together.

The Hading is alive. She generally likes humans, but she's not just going to sit back and let you clear cut large swathes of her forest.

You can ask Saruman how that went for him.

Fair enough. Knew there was a reason everyone didn't do that.

We can manage with the 32 Goods we'll have, 10 Meat-Keeping Sticks, various tools, and Wolf Pelts if we can get 'em. Plus gold and silver, of course.

What we might do is actually have Tuskpuncher go east, and we go west (or vice versa), and we visit all of the likely grain-exporting ports in sequence within our radius.

(Although if there's one place which is especially likely, and we stand to get there quicker if we take a more direct route, maybe not, it's a trade-off I suppose.)

It might still be worth asking Tuskpuncher if there are any other bulk trade goods we could load up on; I feel like 32 Goods and that other stuff is likely to leave quite a lot of room. Maybe we buy a bunch of wool (or effectively: Goods) from neighbouring farms? Shearing season is early spring, so it would actually be the perfect time, we could essentially take the fleeces from half the Hading in our hold.

@Imperial Fister, could something like this work?

Probably something like that yeah.

Goods are usually fairly interchangeable with cash, but this might be viable depending on the situation. Certainly no harm in asking, anyway. We could also bring along some Iron...we likely want to keep our Forged Iron, but we have 65 oz. of Bog Iron we could also sell easily.

We're pregnant. Let's not actually go out looking for fights and invite a miscarriage, shall we? The wolves were urgent and we'll be with the best warriors in the valley, but I had some qualms even there. A raid is significantly higher risk.
Ehh, only if we go looking for knights. We did have the option last time to go for a simple village raid. As the owners of the boat we can choose to raid for food.

So do we think the state of our Food is better than or worse compared to others in the Valley?

Also ig now might be a good time to expand our farm further.

We're a bit better off in general because we're not feeding that many mouths, but even with that, things are going to be a bit tight. We Can handle it, but a lot of people are going to either go hungry or go bandit otherwise.

But hey, good impetus to do that long workshopped trading trip!

[X] Talk to Audrikr and play a game of tafl while you're at it
-[X] Talk about Frenzy and Berserkr. First topic: Does Frenzy have uses outside of battle? Like in negotiations?

[X] Yes, you will buy a horse
-[X] Morningsilver
-[X] Sundancer

[X] Yes, you will buy some bling
-[X] But all three (30 oz. bling, costs 8 oz. silver)

There's always a chance of Knights in Christian lands. It's just a matter of higher or lower chances, never none. The village raid still had a chance of knights, just a lower one. And in Norse lands, meanwhile, there are Norsemen.

So do we think the state of our Food is better than or worse compared to others in the Valley?

Also ig now might be a good time to expand our farm further.

Our income is better but they caught us with low stored food after the deal with the Dwarves (which was less than a year ago). We're probably fine if we can get some wolf meat and/or burn some Odr, but it's pretty tight without the trading expedition. For other farms, if operating with a lower margin (which is likely, ours is mostly from our pot and we don't have huge numbers of people at the farm) other people might not have much savings either and will definitely not be able to make what they have go as far. People are in trouble.

And expanding the farm is probably a good call, yes, though I dunno if we have time to buy land on this visit and it won't actually help over the Winter due to the 'no land produces food'...still we could try buying some when we come back from the trading expedition. That'll involve coming through town and we should be able to do it then. We could likewise turn in our Dwarf Coins for silver at that point.

Do you remember that idea abaout cattle producing Orthstirr? In the end was it ever implemented? Or are we just ignoring what types of animals we have in our farm?

Lower Top
-Gary Tuskpuncher, Elephant Merchant
-Halla Skyfire
-Abjorn Vidsson

It's Abjorn Bearbreaker now!

Stigr Kersson: (10/10) Stigandr, or 'Stigr' to his friends, is about your age. No matter how many times you've seen him get knocked down, he's never learned to keep his mouth shut. He's probably one of the best shots in the valley. He's probably your best friend, other than Abjorn. Now that he's back, it's like everything is right in the world... even though you know it can't be.
Stigr Safety-Bringer, unless Safety-Bringer isn't really a kenning.

Should Gabriel Blackstone be on the valley powerlevels?

We're just ignoring it for the most part. Other than Horses, which are apparently a whole separate thing (and almost certainly do produce Orthstirr given description). But cattle are just part of the Livestock Quality stat, which does help determine the Orthstirr of the farm, but it's pretty abstracted.

The names should definitely be changed, yeah. And I suspect Gabriel isn't really counted as he's still viewed as an outsider. He'd likely be in the same category Halla is, though. Nice to see we've gone up a ranking! That seems pretty accurate in context.

I do hope we will have time to chat with Eric.

Incidentally..

Hey Sagaseeker,

Do you remember anything from before you were Realized?
What do you think about your siblings?

===

Oh right, should vote.

[X] Plan: Bonnie and Clydesdale

Man. Imagine if we didn't have a boat.

===

I'm looking forwards to us making a Sauna on our farm. Saunas are great.

"Do you remember anything before you were born? All I remember is a rush of colors and warmth. And the drums of war."
What do you think about your siblings?
"Your children are not my siblings, though I call you mother. They're fine, if rather boring. I suppose they'll develop personalities as they grow, so I shall wait for then."

If Sagaseeker can let us use his Orthsirr, can other people let us use their Orthsirr as well? Or use letting other people use our Orthsirr?

Could be an important part of Odr cultivation..
Oh boy oh boy I am pretty excited for tomorrow :drevil:
I wonder what's going down?

Aside from the Famine and Kyrsvikingr Politics, anyway.

Probably? We might need to be touching for that to work, though, which limits the utility a bit. I'll add it to the research topics we're experimenting with.

I very much doubt it. That doesn't use Orthstirr directly, it uses Aspects themselves and those don't seem amenable to use by others. We need to Odr cultivators to experiment with trying to use other people's Aspects to gain Odr in anything resembling safety, though.

Aside from the Famine and Kyrsvikingr Politics, anyway.

I mean, we get to talk about and find our information about berserks and how they work. That sounds super interesting to me in terms of worldbuilding, and might result in all sorts of interesting things.
