The dragonflask is tempting, but I'm kind of wondering something about it, and, honestly, I have no idea how on or off base that could be.

Alberich's rituals have, thus far, been long stretches of quiet followed immediately by a sudden massively over the top act on the day itself, and one mirroring the murder of the Haupt-Anderssens.

If we use the dragonflask, then suddenly, Alberich, as the man at the center of the ritual, will himself will die in a massively over-the-top manner on the day of the ritual itself. it won't mirror the actual history, but it will have some parallels with the rest of the general progression of events.

Thus, the question: Mathilde has accidentally performed counter-rituals before. Is there any risk that this act, via following some of the theming, might accidentally play into the Chaos ritual that's presently going on?
Do we know the specific cause of death for the historic parallel to today's target?

I wonder if we couldn't siphon the power of the ritual to Ranald like we did for the Ork ritual. After all, we are probably swimming in Ranald's divine essence right now.

I feel like Ranald would be less than pleased if we passed him a Chaos blunt, to say nothing of the effects of running chaotic energies through our own soul. Doing it with the Orks caused us to bulk up and could have potentially left us permanently more Orky IIRC (i.e. taller, more muscular, and so on); I don't even want to imagine what trying it with Chaos would do to us. The Ork ritual also only worked in part because of the carelessness of Mork in leaving the channel open after they were done with us, and I have no faith that the Chaos Gods would be similarly vulnerable, making the plan a nonstarter. Even leaving all that aside, I'm pretty sure just trying at all would be an Abominable Act under Article 7 and would be grounds for the Empire to apply swords, fire, etc.

[X] Kill: Branulhune
[X] Capture: Throttle
[X] Capture: Mockery of Death

*I want to see the corpse.
*I want any loot he has on his body or in his vehicle.

The loot could be important; it could be papers or journals that give us more information, or it could be horrible books for us to burn, or it could be magic items to lock away or burn, or something. It might lead us to more information; other people he's working with, or if he's working for some major Cultist or Daemon or something, or whatever.

I'm voting for capture in hopes of, well, being able to interrogate him ourselves. That's more risky if he gives anything away, but at the same time, we'd be the ones who have him in our grasp, so we'd be able to control who gets access to him or not. (It's also not certain that he'd know the Empress is a fake, since she could be a cousin he doesn't know, or etc. Also people might just think it a lie.) But I'd understand if people would be wanting to go for the kill rather than risk capture.

Still, I want to be able to roll up not just him, but potentially gain any extra clues there are to be gained too. Who he had been working with to make this happen, who he paid off or bribed or blackmailed. That's why I'm voting for Capture, and voting for Branulhune over Dragonflask; because Branulhune will leave us the ability to loot the sedan.

And also because the Dragonflask seems like too much risk of collateral, and being too flashy. And I don't want to use it just because 'Well we haven't used it yet!' Plus, a swordy assassination is just cooler. :p

Hmmm... It was mentioned: Fishbone stuck in the throat, IIRC. (faux edit, ninjaed)

So I'm guessing that while Fire might be brutal enough the any cut severing his throat is also liable to be enough.

Eh, screw it:

[X] Capture: Throttle
[X] Capture: Mockery of Death
[X] Capture: Reinforcements

It's an ritual powered by the deaths of one family of imperial nobles, performed by an imperial noble who's family the deaths are being mirrored from, and today is the day of the ritual. Best he lives long enough for the energies to die down.

The Dragonflask, because it means waiting for the right moment, has an extra risk: Alberich may meanwhile do something Mathilde isn't ready for.

Best if she doesn't give him the chance.

Kill him like a dwarf would.

Mathilde the sword wizard: Bifurcation! My favourite spell

Also we have an arcane mark that banks fires around us making it even less likely. Or does that only effect the light?
I believe you may be referring to Flicker, which mentions that "fires burn low around you", albeit I suspect the Dragonflask's flames don't quite fit in the same category as, say, torches or fireplaces. The arcane mark would help, probably, but we're still fundamentally talking about a giant exploding fireball.
Arcane Marks:
Flicker: Light seems uneasy in your presence. Lamps flicker, candlelight dims, and fires burn low around you.
Mantle of Mist: Visible vapours are drawn to you. Fog and mist makes it easier to hide; smoke and gases are rather less convenient. +1 Intrigue, potential trouble with any gas-based weapons.
Shrouded: Shadows you are in grow deeper and cling more tightly to you. +2 Intrigue.
Unnatural Shadow: Your shadow has a mind of its own, moving around to inspect its surroundings and coil around things and people it takes a liking to. This is, needless to say, very unnerving.

That particular mutant is on his way to try and kill well dug in and paranoid noble family, and for all we see he is alone, not to mention he needs to kill them in a specific way.

The rune of superior skill seems like the best bet to cut off any nasty surprise that he likely has.
