@Dragonofelder What are you actually trying to vote for? Backfill? Hoeth from Mourning? Nehekharan gods from Varr? Because as is you are only voting for the Backfill part, with the other two library(?) votes being orphaned and unquantifiable.
"Loerk, Lord of the Dance:

Nordlanders who develop warts on their feet are said to have received the Lord of the Dance's disfavour. Those opposed to dancing on general principle encourage these unsightly growths to expand by rubbing them with toads, and during big festivals, these men and women proudly sit with their shoeless feet propped up to show their disdain. Some whisper that these folks are in fact Artho-following Middenlanders."
If Loerk happens to have the same energy signature as Ranald, Mathilde would notice upon encountering his divine presence, right?

We could always try using our transcendent boon from Vlag for that, since light runes are simple runes and Karag Vlag has literally thousands of Rhunkit. It might not go over well, since being willing to mass produce runes to survive literal Hell does not necessarily imply a willingness to mass produce runes in other circumstances, but if it does it could be pretty great. I love the idea getting a huge delegation of Karag Vlag dwarves to visit Karak Eight Peaks like some sort of NegaOkral.
The problems with the Vlagians is that we don't know how they fit into Thorek's plan for the Runesmith's guild yet.

I really want to back-fill, but figure that if we're going to be looking into the Hekarti faction it would be best to get a better idea of what Hekarti actually means to the elves first. Both to get a better idea in advance before we go in there, and so that we can reassure any Imperials who ask that no Hekarti isn't actually a god of dark magic, and have the sources to back that up.

We could also probably use vitae for it. I kinda feel like "sweet lighting" is kinda weaksauce as a transcendent boon. I'd rather save it for when we march on skavenblight after the ratmen assasinate belegar so we don't need to dip into necromancy.

We really need to have some knowledge on nordland. We are inevitably going to have to deal with them because of the waystone project or when the next geopolitical flareup happens so I rather have some knowledge about them rather than going in blind

There's always the possibility of buying books of Hekarti out of pocket, though it is currently losing. I feel like the format of the vote is working against us here - a lot of the people voting to not buy books on Hekarti out of pocket are voting for a library purchase of books on Hekarti, and some would probably want to buy them out of pocket if back-fill won.

Not sure why no one is buying from College or dwarf, so I´m leaving those out.

I understand the gods focus because we are excited about Ranald's daughters and the sunk cost of sacrificing the crystals. Now we want to dig into that.

I don't think having the Great Library buy tons of books about two Elven gods is the way to investigate Ranald's daughters though. I just think it's weird that for the first year of construction, half the official purchases would be about elven gods. We are setting the tone here.

My personal pick from the Library of Mournings engineering and linguistics.

Engineering is kind of straightforward, it's the subject we have with the highest bonus. It's the kind of thing that people would probably consider visiting the Karak for or even moving here. Whether or not dwarven engineers end up massively refering to our books or not, there is still Radicals, the non-dwarf inhabitants of the Karak and the rest of the world. I'm all for our library being a honey trap for engineers around the world! A karak where non dwarves can live and where the biggest collection of books on engineering exists is a pretty huge draw. If nothing else, it could benefit the gunnery and other industrial undertakings.

Linguistics is not only about Mathilde, but about collaboration with the Eonir in general. Ok, mostly about Mathilde but at least it's something that could be useful to anyone wanting to establish relations with Laurelorn. Mostly, I just think it's something that Mathilde would want to buy after being exposed to so many elves flexing on her linguisticly.

I don't know how your last vote would be counted right now. As an approval vote for all variations of Barak Varr purchase plans? Or as a broken vote that doesn't get added anywhere?

I would prefer to have something about the Griffon wood, but anything is better than books in subjects we likely will not use for years if ever for the sake of some obscure library virtue

I think if you want our purchase this round to be a step on the road of making our library great then back-fill is the way to go. The Library of Mournings is cool and impressive and having copies of its books in our library is a good long term goal, but right now it is a very inefficent way of using the library's resources. Compare those two options:
[ ] [LIBRARY] Barak Varr booksellers: name three public topics to acquire all available Empire and Dwarven books on.
[ ] [LIBRARY] Library of Mournings: name two non-magical topics to hire Cityborn scribes to copy all available Laurelorn books on.
Assuming that 'all available books' goes up to Esoteric, the second option means getting 500gc worth of books. On the other hand, getting books from two different cultures on three different topics is 1500gc worth of books, three times as much. We don't know how much we'll get from picking back-fill (and we never will if we keep getting Eonir books) but it will be even more than that.
I can see the reasoning for why having engineering and linguistics books will be good for the library, but pick almost any topic in our library and you could probably make a compelling argument for why more books on that topic will be good for the library. We are probably going to want to start negotiating with other libraries soon, and while having two more shelves of Eonir books isn't bad, quantity has a quality of its own.

And it's not like we always know in advance what knowledge we'll need. Having lots of books on lots of topics isn't some noble sacrifice for the sake of the library, it's a good long term investment for Mathilde as well.

I have to ask who are we trying to send a message to with these purchases?

It is natural for players in quests to overestimate how much the world notices or cares about the actions of the main character, I know I've been guilty of it myself more times than I can count, but just think about this for a moment. Who at this moment even knows there is a library in the works outside of the hold that is at the very edge of the civilized lands:
  1. Dragonas
  2. Algard, maybe one or two more grey LMs if they kept their ear to the ground
  3. The book seller clan in Barak Var
Of these people who is going to follow out purchases and give some kind of symbolic meaning to them?

The main reason I dislike backfill is that it feels like it should be covered largely by deals with cults/other libraries. I'd much rather focus on picking up stuff that is either rare or directly useful and fill out the more common stuff from the deals we make or patronage.

That said since there doesn't seem to be any interest in picking up info on gryphons wood or on what a biological child of two gods would look like switching my vote over:
