Challenges are typically not to the death. Thyrus Gormann still remained the Magister Patriarch of the Bright Order after he was defeated by Gelt in canon, and Alric became Supreme Patriarch about three times? I don't think there's an example of someone dying in the duels.
I'm sorry 'relatively free'? We are the leader of a multinational mega-project, the Archchancellor of a Branch College and the Head Librarian of a Transcendent Tier library. Our head runneth over with hats and the field where we grow our free times is barren.
