I know that, you know that, the thread knows that. Mathilde doesn't, and it would be perfectly in character for her to check.

Furthermore, why a Grey LM and not a Light or Amethyst one? Both would be better against undeads. It could be because Mat's awesome, or because a shadowmancer is needed.
LMs don't grow on trees, they may just be trying for what they can get

Honestly, anything that isn't actual fucking babysitting or something inheritable will do, but I prefer these options. Heidi is the Empress; she can get her kid the best bodyguards and babysitters money and power can buy. If she's managed to survive in a Vampire court pretending to be one for at least a decade, then she should be able to account for any threats to Mandred short of an invasion. And if one takes place, then the entire Colleges of Magic will assemble. As for inheritable land, positions and titles... I'd rather not have to deal with the expectations of producing an heir to pass things onto. We've got a GF already, and she's cute.

The first possibility, of course, is that you accept the current status quo as a reward for your hard work, rather than a deficiency to be addressed. Belegar will keep finding ways to make use of your talents, and you'll have time and resources enough for your pet projects, as well as still being on hand should something go drastically wrong and need correcting.

Or you could push Belegar to continue sending you afield. He does want to continue to enhance the stature of Karak Eight Peaks in the Karaz Ankor, and what better way to do that than for you to travel it and solve all their strangest problems? It would also mean getting to see every corner of the Dwarven world and encounter all the strangest phenomenon it would have to offer.

Or you could turn to the biggest possible project you could pursue. The Laurelorn Elves have voiced their desire to work with you to unravel as many secrets as possible about the network in the slightly inaccurate belief that you already have some of those secrets. This might be the only chance to pool the knowledge of the Laurelorn, the Empire, and the Karaz Ankor, and for a project that could do wonderful things. Sure, you doubt you'll be able to replicate the combined efforts of the Elves and Dwarves at their heights, but every scrap of understanding of the existing network could make all three peoples better able to protect and make use of the ancient energy streams.

[X] Ranaldian High Priest of Kislev
Another one from Heidi, this one more directly. This is a wheel you set in motion yourself, and perhaps it's suitable that you follow it through to the end, resolve the grudge between Ranald and the Gods of Kislev, and establish the worship of your oldest friend in a new land. You did leave quite a few mysteries behind in and around Kislev that you'd quite like to get to the bottom of, and it would be fun to have the undeniable right to attend future Grand Conclaves.

I don't vote often, but it is times like this when I will get involved. To reiterate: these jobs interest me, largely because I want to see how the down to earth matters of the setting gets fleshed out.

Swamp town would have appeal if we were a different character. Ambassador does not interest me and Loremaster I think has run it's course. High priest and waystones are a no-go, I don't share the threads obsession with abstract esoterica.

I kind of want to do most of these, shame they are so big we're limited to just one...

The problem is Thorgrim cannot in good faith offer compensation because he is not at fault, but he also cannot explain why he is not at fault so it comes down to trust the High King because he is High King. If Belegar is unwilling to do that you get a flash point. Keep in mind dwarf going to war with dwarf is not impossible, really really rare yes, more so now than in the golden age, but if push comes to shove hard enough... well.
Once Thorgrim is aware of the problem, there IS a solution though: make Belegar heir.

He could also possibly make vaguer statements that the energy is being used to benefit the Karaz Ankor as a whole, not just KaK, and if he swore it sufficiently emphatically Belegar would likely believe him enough to leave the stones alone.

Or, he could use the new energy to power up one of the lost works of the ancestors, and just say that the stones are powering that, which Belegar would approve of.

This choice it quite literally described as being the closest to the biggest levers of power. This is not a waste of her her talents, nor is it a 24/7 job (probably).

In my opinion, this is also the choice to make if we want to root out cults, exert global pressure, travel around for diplomatic visits that may just become something more than "diplomatic" or solve murder mysteries. Being a personal tutor/bodyguard to the future Emperor may offer a very broad range of possible missions.
You seem to be reading a hell of a lot into it, the imperial Court has people for all of that.
It seems far more likely to get us wrapped up with Heidi's mess and I really don't want to have to deal with that, shes our friend but its arguable if she's a good person.

I like the Waystone Project for all the reasons that have already been brought up.

I'd prefer to be a Count of Sylvania rather than the Markgraf - being an advisor and helper to the Markgraf instead of running the place ourselves means we can focus on our areas of competence instead of having to do all the nitty-gritty minutia, and will leave us more free time for our own research. Pull an Elspeth, basically.

Wissenland is neat - it gets us more influence, let's us help the empire in a time of need, and is a project with a relatively clear end state.

And I'm game for both of Ranald's silly games - being Top Cat would be fun, and I want to hear more about Heidi's offer.

I am not interested at all about pacifying and managing two of the worst places to settle on the old world, I am willing to get more information of everything else thoug...
