"I have a spell at my disposal that will ensorcell the target into a sort of enchanted sleep.

Also can I just mention that I continue to be entertained by how skilled Mathilde is at whitewashing basically anything.

'Ensorcell them into an enchanted sleep' is such a nice way of saying 'paralyze them with something very like rigor mortis to the point they seem dead but they remain conscious unless we use a completely different spell that actually puts them to sleep'.

Very nice way of making it not horrifying, A+.

"At least forty tons of meat per steam-wagon," Borek says, a hint of hope re-entering his voice. "That quintuples our range. If we can get enough cows, that's more than enough to reach Karag Dum and for the journey back."
"Of course you should solve your problem with Wizards. You should solve every problem with Wizards."
- Multiple Dwarf kings

With bated breath, three hundred sets of eyes watch as the freshly-unloaded Kriestov noses its way forward. With its engine struggling to get up to steam on an incline it was always going to be slow, but given the circumstance it seems like very understandable hesitance. The remaining portion of the road seems far too narrow for the steam-wagon to slip past and you find yourself holding your breath as it slowly noses its way forward...

[Rolling...]

...and through, allowing you to finally exhale. But the wait for the Alexis to be unloaded and de-crewed allows tension to mount once more and you're just as nervous the second time...

[Rolling...]

...though, thankfully, for nothing. With the remaining steam-wagons reunited, the Dwarves scramble to reload the cargo so that the Expedition can finally get moving again and start to make up for lost time. The impact of the Urmskaladrak could have rung the dinner bell for any Kurgans or Ogres or who knows what else might be in the area, and right now your best defence against them is to be elsewhere.
The amount of tension in that scene.
And all of if for a glorified fortitude check by a chunk of ground.

So much to do, so little time...
The eternal cry of the quester.

We need some form of solution for the return trip to at least increase the odds, a 1 in 6 chance of losing each Steam Wagon, and likely every Steam Wagon behind it, is simply untenable
It's a problem for another day, once we figure out what's even happening in Dum to begin with, but it's a problem

Bring some cranes to the bend, then lower the steam wagons over the side?
Bring up some workers and blasting charges, widen the curve by cutting a slope out of where the road switchbacks?

Take the alternate crazy route back home, through Kurgan territory, across pack ice, and accepting that we're probably going to have to abandon the wagons a little bit north of Kislev when we hit mountain?
Now obviously the ideal is that we don't piss them off at all, but I'm not sure how feasible that is. I'm confident in Mathilde's stealth and thievery skills, but the convoy itself is anything but subtle and its not a big leap from 'someone has stolen our sacred chalice' to 'this massive convoy of foreigners has stolen our sacred chalice' even if there's no actual evidence.
It is if we're disguised as a member of another group of steppe nomads when we do it.
Wind Herder Project! Barrel of Ferment and Taste of Fire!

Taste of Fire requires Water to convert into an alcoholic beverage. Ferment can turn A Liquid("no matter how foul or brackish") into a light booze of choice (wine/ale/mead are given as examples in RoS). Taste of Fire can make something that's already alcoholic and bump it up to the potency of hard spirits.

Party in a can! Just gotta keep the spells from like lingering in the booze and dharring up, but hey that's windherder's problem! 🧙‍♂️
Makes me wonder whether combining those two enchantments would give us the ability to use water for Gyrocopter fuel. -wait, are gyrocopters steam-powered, or are they alcohol-engine internal combustion? They have to be internal combustion right?

We are going to call it "Wizard's Brew", and dwarves will haze new arrivals to K8P by daring them to drink mug of magic.

Initially I was just being like hee hee hoo hoo, but honestly I really like the idea now if it could be made to work haha.

We've gotten a fairly hard no on the idea of magical foodstuff that dwarves would be consuming all the time (*re: the Jade spell that just Makes Fields Good and Full), or they'd get Stone Guts. But as a hazing thing it could be funny.

Never mind the army morale side if it got mass produced, unlikely as that is given our need to be there for production. The ability of an army to just scoop up some brackish mud water into the wizard keg and shake it up a bit, and start handing out shots is pretty appealing for the army on the go haha. I imagine the belly full of fireball booze would offset the UGH WIZARDS side pretty quick. :V

E:*Small correction to myself it was using Cleansing Glow on food/drink that dwarves would be eating that is the problem, the Grow A Field spell was more steps removed and wouldn't stone poison their guts. Same issue re:drinking, just semantics!

So, I went back to find the clever poster who proposed this whole Moo-kery of Death thing (using the spell to preserve our food, not the pin), and I discovered that the post:
Hey @BoneyM dumb question, can we negate the need for a store room by using mockery of death on stuff. I assume even if we can use it on livestock it'd take up to much space but I thought I might ask.

Had already been gilded and tagged as insightful more than 80 times.

So congrats @SoHowAreYou , and drinks are on the house for you for the foreseeable future round these parts.

Also, I'm literally going to use this as an example of the "There Are No Stupid Questions" trope. :)

Steam with coked peat. Alcohol engines are currently bleeding-edge and a matter of much debate and division amongst the Engineers.

@BoneyM, where is Deathfang spending his time now that the Urmskaladrak is gone?

Perched on the back of the Volans like a very surly bird.

Rite of Way speeds scouting murderkitties up, and Melkoth's slows those trying to reach the Murderkitties down. And we're in the worst part of the Chaos Wastes, so the chances of that being really damn helpful have only increased.

Without Gotrek it is very important that the wagons not get stuck. But at the same time I do not want Mathilde spamming battle magic needlessly.

[X] Attempt to make contact with the Dolgan
Far better to make contact than hope they assume our identity.

[X] Ranging far ahead of the convoy
Seems better than other options.

I think there's a strong argument to be made that we should grab the Chaos Goblet on the way back.

Consider two factors. The first, it might be in someone's possession or in someone's territory, which might make us enemies. The second, having a Chaos artifact that Chaos worshipers want seems like the sort of thing that would further incentivize Chaos to attack us, or have their gods tell them to attack us, so as to claim it and their god's glory for themselves.

It just seems like this is the sort of trip that stands a real chance of increasing the number of enemies we have and making the risk of someone attacking us even higher. Thus, seems like the sort of thing best saved for the way back, as the shorter the time frame that danger is increased, the better.
