I'll trust whatever happens re:library votes to other folk haha.

Not really expecting a whole lot of Magic Marker support given I don't have time/energy to really sell my ideas to folks, but it's worth a shot at making it so Edda doesn't have to arts and crafts up the holomap while we're taking a nap during the next catastrophe! 🧙‍♂️

Really like the idea of going whole hog on the Cathay books that was brought up earlier too. Even if it turns out to be useless weird stuff, it'll be Extremely Well Translated useless weird stuff!

I feel like our next target for magic items, if that's what we want to spend on instead of other stuff, should probably just be something that helps us spam invisibility. Great as a panic button, great for infiltration, great for pranking, and having it as an item minimizes most of its weaknesses.
... Actually that sounds like a great item to get.

A cloak of Invisibility, Illusion or Intangibility!

Most suggestions I see usually bring up stuff we have no idea if we'll use (the cure candle) or some kind of super-purchase like the speed-of-light thing (a battle spell) which... eh, kind of leaves you feeling like there's probably a better way to do the killing anyway.

But "become sneakier"? That's both: something Mathilde does all the time, and; something straight out of the Ulgu spellbook, rather than another Wind of magic.

So maybe what we should be looking into, is what will make things easier for Mathilde, or what will make it so that she doesn't have to cast the Ulgu spells herself.

Moderately Complicated - Magic 3 required to learn, Magic 5 to cast reliably.
P / Cloak Activity: Allows you to perform an action while appearing to perform something entirely different for up to half a minute.
K / Mockery of Death: Causes someone you touch to act and appear dead for several days, or until you end it. They retain all their senses, including sight if their eyes are open, and will still need to breathe and drink.
K / Pall of Darkness: Creates an area of impenetrable blackness within short range that lasts for about a minute or so.
- This is impenetrable to you as well, even your Magesight.
K / Shroud of Invisibility: Makes you invisible for up to half a minute.
- No limitations. Attack, shoot, scream, do what you like, you stay invisible until it expires or is dispelled.

K / Throttling: Sends ropes of darkness a short distance to strangle the target. Lasts until you choose to stop or your concentration is broken.
- Without magical protection or supernatural toughness, the target is helpless from when the spell hits their throat.

Fiendishly Complex - Magic 5 required to learn, Magic 7 to cast reliably.
K / Illusion: You create an illusion at short range that can look, sound, and smell like anything you want. Requires near-constant concentration to maintain.
- Illusion will not be solid. If the illusion is implausible enough to raise suspicion, those subject to it might see through it.

K / Substance of Shadow: A single person or item that falls within a shadow becomes invisible, silent, and insubstantial, though they can selective choose to physically affect the world. Lasts until the item or character is illuminated.

And that's when I remembered that illusion has the rider of "Requires near-constant concentration to maintain".

It's hard to keep it up and do other stuff at the same time. That means that if we can get a really good item of illusion, we can use that to cast the illusion, and do other spellcasting ourselves. Of course, the obvious issue might be that... as a Fiendishly Complex spell (one with an attached note talking about how it requires near-constant concentration to boot) it'll be very limited or low-duration as an item, or have other issues... whereas Invisibility is a tier down at Moderately Complicated.

But, if it does work? That could simplify things for Mathilde, if she's trying to be sneaky but needs to cast multiple spells or keep multiple things going.

Also... Other possibilities include enchanted items of "Pall of Darkness." To get literal smokebombs. Or a hangman's rope, enchanted with Throttling; for those stealth kills.

You want some kind of "killer enchanted spell" for an Ulgu wizard? You should probably get something like "Throttling" or an Invisibility Cloak. Rather than Speed of Light. Get something that is suitable for your profession. i.e. Make your usual style more smooth and effective.

What are people who vote for "wait until K8P has money" are wanting from the boon?
So we don't have to worry how expensive our boon will be to the Karak. Even if it is sitting on 3 and a half years of free labor and untold vaults of long lost treasures every dwarfhour and coin spent on fulfilling our boon is one not spent on defenses, infrastructure improvements, and other necessities.

The We are adorable and deserve to be the most prominent members of the newly renamed Karak-We. Move over dwarves.

Yes, you used to live here, but you moved out and now the We have purchased your lot. They are gracefully letting you crash on their couch, so I hope you're grateful for that!

Crazy thought - Do we have a plan for if any of the We develop an aptitude for magic?
I mean, I and I think a few others have thought of the We as a possible Liber Mortis successor, so yes.

Necromantic spider babies would be <3<3<3

Does no warp presence mean they have no soul and no afterlife?
If they don't have one already, may I suggest we give them our own afterlife?

Which I suppose is technically an afterdeath, but it works just the same, I promise!

...'Kay.

@Omegahugger I am with you. The We are our babies.
Good to see the light of my adorable babies is resonating throughout the thread.

Also, if anything ever happens to them I am voting to raise a legion of skeletons and raging down absolutely everthing that stands between us and vengeance. Fair warning.

No, i'm asking what are people wanting as the boon, that K8P can't afford to start working on now.

Are the Nehekharan undead powered by Dhar, like what the Vampires use? If so I really want Mathilde to sneak down there and spam the Destroy Dhar spell a bit and run away. Just to watch the chaos.

Explanations:

[] [WE] Scavenge the Gauntlet
Though it's become less of an attempted invasion and more of a source of entertainment to the greenskins forcing their less-favoured underlings to throw themselves against the Dwarven defences, the Underway passage from Black Crag to Karak Eight Peaks is still a constant flow of greenskins. Though they're unlikely to make any real contribution as the battle is one of logistics rather than martial ability for the Dwarves, it will keep them reliably and safely fed, and they will be crediting most of those meals to the Dwarves.

This seems like the best option, to me. For one, it gets the dwarves and humans of K8P used to working alongside the We, especially in battle, and getting an idea of their value in the defense of the Karak would be a major bonus. That the We would be crediting most of those meals to the Dwarves is icing on the cake. The only downside here is that it might reveal the presence of the We to the greenskins, but they'd still lack any real idea of their capabilities, and we're quite a ways from the We being in a position to provide substantial military support regardless.

---

On top of the matter of the We and the debts they're owed, you also have your own debt to consider: a Boon from King Belegar that is practically limitless in scope. Spent well, this could catapult you in power, or influence, or comfort. Spent unwisely, this could beggar the Karak. You're torn between salivating at the possibilities and quailing at the responsibility.

[] [BOON] Save it until the Karak is wealthy enough to afford my ambition.

I feel like this is the most reasonable option. The Karak is going to be wealthy in the future--between the We's silk, mining income, tons of trade income, our position on the Silk Road (trade caravans to Cathay and the Far East will still be lucrative, even if the silk becomes worth little, because the Far East still produces lots of highly desirable goods and vice-versa), and immigration from the promise of safety, security, stability, and opportunity, Karak Eight Peaks will become quite wealthy in time, perhaps even the near future. But right now, Belegar has to grapple with rebuilding the fortifications for most of K8P from scratch, buying all of the guns and cannons he can find, paying off the costs of the Eye of Gazul, and a whole lot more. Let's give it a few years before we drop a megaproject on his lap. Plus, it gives us time to refine our ideas for what we want, and if a major opportunity arises in that time, it gives us the chance to capitalize on that.

Penthouse
The four with the most votes will win.
[] [ROOM] Vault
To keep safe your wealth, your secrets, and your miscellaneous esoterica.
[] [ROOM] Guest Room
For when you have visitors; can fit three comfortably, or up to six if enough of them are on good terms with each other.
[] [ROOM] Wolf's Room
He sleeps at the foot of your bed, but he'd probably appreciate a room of his own for midday naps and playing with the Wolf-Rats.
[] [ROOM] Explosives Laboratory
A room with enough reinforcement and baffles to withstand all but the most inadvisable of experiments.

I figure that an airborne invasion of our Penthouse could only really come from either a handful of elite orcs (in which case, our sword would be preferable and I doubt they'd bring siege weapons on wyvern-back) or from druuchi, which is extremely unlikely. It's something that can wait, at least.

An explosives laboratory is something that would be useful for any particularly volatile experiments/research we do, like with AV and weaponizing it. It's something we probably wouldn't have an easy time finding elsewhere, given how antsy dwarves are with experimental magic.

A guest room is a good idea all around, because we do regularly entertain guests, and we could definitely end up wanting to (or having to) invite VIPs up to our penthouse at some point in the future. Good for prestige and comfort.

A vault because we are steadily accruing stuff we want to keep locked away safely and securely.

And a room for Wolf and the rat-pups, because best dog and puppers.

I despair of the very idea that we're gonna spend the next 20 updates without spending the boon. That is not fun for me. I want to have fun playing Divided Loyalties which is why I'm voting to just spend the boon.

The downside is that it doesn't really accomplish much beyond getting the We fed. Setting them on the mountains, for instance, has the added bonus of added surveillance on those mountains.
There are three positives:
1) It gets the dwarves/humans used to being around the We and thinking of them as allies and comrades rather than big scary spiders. It also basically prevents any casualties among the We, which hunting the Badlands would result in.
2) The We would essentially credit most of the kills/the food that represents to the dwarves, which means we save quite a bit of money (especially since we wouldn't have to use up gunpowder/bullets/cannonshot to kill the greenskins that would otherwise make it to our defenses).
3) It doesn't rely on extensively hunting the local (non-hostile) wildlife, which would otherwise be a potential problem, given how large the We are and how much food they'd require.

I'm guessing that if it's possible at all they've already got an evolved behavior to deal with it. Likely eating the offending party.
Ah, but what if their intelligence boost from recent growth and education allowed for the complex thought threshold needed to be passed?
I mean, I and I think a few others have thought of the We as a possible Liber Mortis successor, so yes.

Necromantic spider babies would be <3<3<3
Unfortunately, the communal mind nature of the We where an individual can die with no substantial loss to the collective consciousness of the whole makes them seem uniquely unsuited for the use of Shyish. I figure Ghur, possibly Hysh or Chamon, are more in line with their nature.

@BoneyM would the We be open to Dwarfs and Humans eating hibernating spiderlings as emergency rations? Now that I understand how their food rationing works I see that they've got better shelf-life than any refrigerated food.

So long as they pay back the protein I guess, but I don't think that humans or dwarfs want to eat spiders.

Right, it's time to vote:

[X] [BOON] I know just what to spend it on...

I've already talked about at length of why I'm doing this, but the long and short of it is:
1. I am not convinced that the Continual boons discussed in this thread (think of things like a Library or Research Society, or Sanctuary for Wizards) have a high upfront cost. Even a Great Library doesn't have to be built in a day - and if cost is a concern, could simply just be built slowly over time. And if cost is indeed a concern, then the Library ought to be built slowly anyway, so the sooner we start on it, the better. If cost isn't the concern on the other hand, then the second option to save it makes no sense.

2. Honestly, I cannot in good conscience vote for the fourth option, because even if I reject the Library, I believe Mathilde do want and need things such as a perpetual scaling Research Budget to supplement her Library Budget, and ideas like a Royal Society of the Eight Peaks that is a cross between DAPRA and the British Royal Society both greatly appeal to me, corresponds to the Research Faction of this thread, could potentially fund expeditions down the line to other lands (not immediately of course, but ten years from now?), and is something I feel Mathilde is inclined to consider in light of the research she has been doing in the past three and a half years as a Loremaster and Magister. And other things like Sanctuary for the Colleges in the Eight Peaks also has my support even before the Library was proposed, and in light of that huge research backlog she keeps accumulating.

[X] [ROOM] Shrine to Ranald
[X] [ROOM] Vault

These two are a must.

[X] [ROOM] Firing Range
[X] [ROOM] Explosives Laboratory

These two have synergies with one another, especially if we are going to eventually get to researching Clan Skyre Artefacts or exploring the possibility of making Aethyric Vitate a Superweapon.

[X] [ROOM] Trophy Room

Approval voting for Trophy Room, because it thematically synchronizes with Vault.

[X] [LIBRARY] The Eonir of Laurelorn (Imperial Extensive), Waystones (Imperial Extensive, Dwarf Extensive)

Let's not be hasty or foolish with our GC.

[X] [COLLEGE] 5 favors for a full translation of the Cathayan books

Roll the Gacha time!

[X] [DWARF] Have a Grandmaster Engineer have a go at the Stirland Repeater - 8 favors

This is a potential game changer, so having someone like Gotri look at it might help in scaling up production, improving reliability and reducing manufacturing cost.

How do these three actually differ in practice? Especially the last one could be interpreted as a combination of the previous two or as something completely different.

That Boon choice is hard.

On one hand it is sort of tempting to keep it in the back pocket for a rainy day or wait a bit for Karak Eight Peaks to get wealthier...

On the other hand the Royal Society/Grand Library idea is exceedingly tempting and its probably the absolute best use of the Boon anyways as long as Mathilde gets all of the credit for setting it up. Besides there's way too many favours/resources just laying around doing nothing.
