You want something you can throw away if it starts exploding or melting or turning into snakes or something, something you hold since most Wizards channel magic through their hands, and the bigger it is the easier it is to make.
And hence the odd look at Adela's wand I suppose. Because if it starts exploding I'm not sure she has enough arm to get it out of blast radius.

gonna go with this it works and I don't really object to any of the actions.

Hold up. Soizic is a Saberface?

Lol- no, just meant to call out to the weirdness that is F/SN's retelling of Camelot and the ways it played with gender. In-universe, I was running off of Soizic 'knowing' that about one in five high-voiced beardless knights are girls, but being shocked that romance writers made this into a Yuri trope. Thinking that even though she is masc-attracted, she's starved for representation and so will keep the book for an MC that is 'like' her.

The actual image I've had in my head for her is much more like this:

In all seriousness though, we should try to make friends with the dragon.

We even have a few options. Anton is one, of course. Asarnil would be reasonable as well. But my favorite would be Dragomas, the Supreme Patriarch. Now, getting him would be difficult, but I do think it would be possible. Worst comes to worst, we could burn our Great Deed on it, though I believe Favor+Belegar should swing it. Because having another friendly emperor dragon around is a big deal. It might be cheaper if we can establish the initial contact ourself, thought that would also be the part that we want him most for.

I can actually see both the Protector and the Deceiver being really useful. If we can do something to protect the dragon (even if it's fairly minor), then that means it'll start much more positively inclined. And with the deceiver we could convince him that we're actually playing straight ("We don't plan to attack you", after having formed a contingency, something like that. It would take a bit of setup, but it can work). Also, polyglot potentially being surprisingly useful, once again.

I'm not sure how keen Belegar would be to use the Empire's solution (give it the treasury). But given the Spider Silk, there'll be a ton of money coming in. Even a part of that would be significant, and it means the hoard is going to be growing. Not to mention, dwarfs are good for making more precious items, and so are wizards (Every hoard needs some enchanted items, don't you know, and there happens to be an enchanter of potentially great skill around). And it doesn't have to worry about thieves with dwarven architecture. Since that's also it's bedroom, it would be doubly effective, because the most vulnerable time is mitigated. Also, we can offer better food. And hell, some intelligent conversation. Dragon's don't seem to require social interaction like other sentients, but I imagine it would be nice, and they can definitely bond with someone (and perhaps they do need it, which is why the wild dragons are all aggressive and crazy, unlike the Imperial Dragon or the elven ones. They got people to talk to).

What does that mean for the reconquest?

The dragon means that we don't have to worry much about that front, because dragon. That makes it reasonable to mark that peak off. I'd say the troll peak is something that can be taken with relatively few complications. Not without blood, but it would be more a question of careful work and deliberate work. It's basically perfect for the dwarfen approach. So that makes two makes two peaks that could be plausibly taken within a few turns.

I'd say the last greenskin bastion is another that's ripe. Now, one should never underestimate Greenskins, but they are vulnerable to getting Mathilde'd, and lack reinforcement. At the very least, I believe Matty can keep them at each others throat.
Next, mystery death mountain. We need to figure that out (and Belegar might assign it to us because it's weird). Still, I'd say tentatively that it's a problem that can be solved by wizarding.

So we have another four mountains that can make reasonably soft targets, if the dwarfs can spare the attention. The Eshin mountain is maybe the hardest, because it's one whole thing, so they'll be pretty hard to push out (and the thread is kinda scared by rat assassins). But I believe there's a solution to that: Dragons. We have the potential to drop two, maybe three, with luck four dragons (Deathfang, Ice Friend, Imperial, Dragomas) on them, which should be enough to savage their base troops that they just can't hold on. We'd have to call in some favors, but between mercenaries, other dwarf holds, and some strings pulled with the empire to get some "volunteers", I think kicking the Skaven out in a single massive push is possible. If we can get them to ramp up the fighting beforehand so they're exhausting, it becomes much easier. If the Horned Rat suppresses the fighting again, it'll be much harder, and much less feasible. (Though taking advantage of the inevitable resentment would still be possible.)

In conclusion, the reconquest of Karags Eight Peak within our lifetime is fully possible, and it starts with the power of friendship (with dragons).

And dammit, I want to ride that dragon (not that way). Shadow Wizard and Light Dragon is a great combination, and don't you know that opposites attract (not that way)? And when we'll have our own college, we'll make the dragon the head of the Hysh department, and it'll be great, and our Light wizards will be much better than those other light wizards, because they'll be inspired by his prowess (not that way).
We already had one long relationship with a light and mirror associated magic reptile (ice can make mirrors, right), and that turned out great (though not that way, damn Boney for vetoing that option in the waifu vote). So I want to really to milk this one too (not that way). And we all know how Mathilde is with older, powerful men (not that way, well, not so far anyway) and women (notice who she reacted to the bursar).

EDIT: It posted an earlier version with some stuff missing. Dunno how that happened.

Wouldn't it be smarter to write that paper about the vampire's abilities since A, we'll likely fight against greenskin magic again thus refreshing it and giving the plus 10. B, we aren't likely to fight a vampire who uses the same ability any time soon and finally C, we already know that this paper will at least get the confirming bonus since the ability was only rumoured and not well documented.

@BoneyM

As the ducklings show, there's a big difference between technically being able to cast a spell, and being able to do it quickly and cleanly in the middle of battle.

Does Mathilde think she's already proficient enough with Smoke and Mirrors (tied to FC magic) to use it in combat, or would taking a training action along those lines be useful?

It will take time and practice to use it to anywhere near its fullest extent, but she has the technical ability to cast it even in the heat of combat.

Thread discussion pointed to Waagh being more well favored. So it goes. Relatively few people considered the vampire paper to be strategically as important, even if its worth more Favor directly.

"Excuse me, my King," Princess Edda interrupts, "but I've discovered that I have no affinity for dealing with or managing humans. I believe it would be better for the economy of your Karak for a new Steward to be found." She's obviously rehearsed saying this, and to her credit none of her nervousness is visible except in a tremble in her shoulders.

King Belegar considers her for some time. "No," he says finally. "You've shown diligence and ability in every other aspect of the role, and there's no shame in not being equally skilled in every new and strange challenge Karak Eight Peaks supplies. Give the leader of the Undumgi temporary control of Karag Nar and let him know if he proves equal to the task, it will be made permanent and he will be given the title of Thane. Drop management of the silk business in his lap, that can be his trial. Meanwhile, see to establishing proper infrastructure in Karagril - they've got picks and the like, but they'll need a blacksmith for sharpening and repairs, a carpenter for support beams, and a smelter until we retake Karag Rhyn. Probably several other things, too - find out what."

"Thank you, King Belegar," Princess Edda says, just above a whisper.

"No thanks needed. Since you were given it, you've earned your position and you'll do so several more times over in the coming years."
EEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Awwwww Edda! You need lotsa hugs.

*spams hug buttons*

The Silver Tower remains in ruins, but it still supplies an amazing view of the entire Karak and from there Dreng gives the results of the hard work of the scouts. "Kvinn-Wyr," he says, pointing to the most distant. "Trolls, as we know. The Sentinels show signs of Orc habitation at some point, but they're long gone." He skips over Mhonar to point at Karag Rhyn. "Broken Toof above, Crooked Moon below. The former used to live in the caldera and the latter once had the entire mountain, so they're crammed in and angry at each other about it, though right now it's skirmishes instead of all-out war. Which is strange, because Karag Mhonar is right there and, as far as I could tell, uninhabited. Lots of dead greenskins and Skaven, from fresh to ancient, all with shattered bones. But my Rangers have scoured it from top to bottom and found nothing."
*finger rises*

No.

Just no. Not for anyone else.

That's definitely Weird Shit that needs poking.

"Ice Dragon," Dreng confirms.

King Belegar sighs. "That's the last thing we need. Grim tidings, but fine work, Dreng. Head to Karak Azul, have a word with their Blacksmiths Guild. We've been getting a trickle of individual Dwarves and some entire Clans, and not all have ancestral weapons. Make sure there's at least an axe and a shield for each, and have the sigil of Eight Peaks on each." He smiles and nods. "Finally, surface defence. Master Weber?"
*twitches*

A fucking Ice Dragon. Lol okaythen.

Lets juuuuuust leave that be for now.

They can make a cauldron and then ramp up the thickness about thirty-fold or so. They can't make a cannon that can aim and they can't make a cannon that would be at all portable, but grapeshot means not having to aim and being effectively stationary means they can overengineer the living hell out of it to make up for a lack of any idea what the hell they're doing.
ENTHUSIASM! They'll figure it out I think.

I mean, i am not gonna lie, taming a dragon and forming partnership would be fukken amazeballs, i just doubt its in the cards unless Ranald decides we roll like, three natural crits in a row.

Thanks for the info. So it looks like Smoke and Mirrors is in the same sort of state as Branulhune, where we're proficient but can't exploit it fully yet.

Call in Anton and put the Coin on it.
