Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

So the thing is that almost anything can be brought together to make a theme. It's not that hard. What I want to start talking about now is creating a plan for our domain. So we have this sort of goal to shot towards. People keep talking about a domain based on the idea of home. This idea is far to vague and doesn't help plan out a path. That is about as far as we got. What key words do we want? Meizhen went for the resolve keyword to create this amazing fear ability. Do we want to do something like that and focus on a key word? Or do we want to focus on effects like things that help the people around us? We don't even have an idea of what Ling Qi wants so of course the first thing that pops up people will take. There is no reason not to because there is no plan. This will happen every single time we finish an art unless we have something to point to. If we have a plan people can get behind these kinds of vote will be much smoother.

We should have started the plan the instant we learned about domains. Maybe we can get help in the inner sect and be lead by the hand into creating the domain. At the very least I want to present an idea for that tutor.
Yeah, you are right.

Something though, is that Meizhen's domain is an inverse of ours. Her Fear effects are conditional on people below 'this many friendship dots'. Hopefully 2, because it would be ridiculous if our domain can only work on 2 people but hers worked on anyone but 2 people.

Totally agree. But lets start a brainstorming session and just get ideas out into the thread. You already saw my idea of a domain based on lowering other peoples percpetion and boosting our own/allies.

What would your ideal domain be and due. Lets worry about key words later.

Edit: This is not just at Arkeus. Come on Everyone! Give the thread your ideas!

It's a pity the vote didn't have an hour or two lockout, so the discussion about it happened before people started voting...

What is done is done.

Lets hear your idea for domains!
Here is another one. Getting as many rerolls as possible for our allies in as many stats as possible. Being a lucky girl for our friends!

Ok, I would suggest that thinking about mechanical effects is the wrong thing here.

Think about themes and ideals instead.

My interpretation of Meizhen's general ethos here is "be a scary snake" (恐蛇道).

For ideas for us I'm starting with things such as "bard", "enchanted forest", "fairy realm", "magical girl theme music" etc.

One of the interesting tensions we have (which we can see reflected in this vote as well) is between the sneaky spy/ninja, and the group support bard - which don't really mesh perfectly. Working out how to reconcile the two is another thing to think about.

Those are some really cool themes! Lets keep them coming everyone!

I think part of the reason I like "Scary Fairy" as a central theme is it can mesh pretty well with both sides of the bard and spymaster. Fairies sing and dance and have fun with their friends, but they also plot and scheme and intimidate. The Fae are dual-natured, and can be both loved and feared, often simultaneously.

I guess this brings into more clarity why I prefer the themes of seeing through lies and illusions; I like Fae themes for Ling Qi and it's a very Fae ability.

One of the cool ideas about the fairy realm is that fairies bless those who come in invited. But, those that force there way in find nothing but pain and misfortune

I would also suggest it's another thing that would be good to research. Learning about spirits doesn't just have to be about looking for potential partners, it can also provide inspiration. Similarly, learning more about the moon could be very useful to us for a number of reasons.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror
-[X] Ling Qi receives a four die bonus when attempting to discern lies or see through illusions.

A stealth character who cannot navigate illusions is somewhat useless haha

The elements we have now actually support a Fae theme rather well too. The Dark of a Full Moon night, the Music eerily haunting the Woods, even the deep Icy snows of Winter. It's a convenient merging of our elemental disarray.

I'm wary. "Fae theme" doesn't really mean anything specific. There's no goal. It's just a thing. A thing with a billion interpretations. That is the opposite of what I thought this exercise is, practically.

Think about a spy in a bustling city rather than in a village or the middle of the night it does makes some sense. S/he needs the people around him/her to disappear in the crowd. Exactly like PLR does.
An other option would be to link it with the Moon: different phases means different overall concepts. Going up to 8 might be a bit too much for a mere mortal, but i could see "full moon" = bard surrounded by people, "new moon" = spy in the darkness.
Or : Two sides of the coin.
Or: The Mask, and what is hidden behind it.
ect...
Of course Ling Qi really lacks the social finesse usually associated with bards, but we're working on it...

i think you still need to remove the X if you don't want to vote for that.

We are trying.
How about you! What do you want Ling Qi's domain to be or do?
Eh, here: it'd follow a winter/spring duality following rough split themes of warding or isolating desolation and bolstering growth. Maybe with the two halves glued together with a theme of mystery or hidden natures; a hidden verdant valley in a cold windswept land, or something similar. The three main components to Ling Qi's strengths: layered, first the winter embodies our offensive/debuff heavy abilities with the thematically appropriate field effects we favor, then the various stealthy aspects we utilize to escape from an enemies notice, then the spring of our buffing abilities. Outside/threshold/home.

It can also symbolize Ling Qi's life experience. Her time on the street was a harsh and barren with little respite, and then her time at the sect was one of hope and growth. The common thread that carried her through both was her ability at subterfuge, the Grinning Moon, and now that I think of it, Music. Moon is an element of change, so embodying the transition is appropriate and both stealth and Music are associated heavily with the moon for Ling Qi; our core Arts for either were gifts from her, even. The Winter, Ling Qi's harshest times, should also be understood as an intrinsic part of her, and in some ways key to her success. The Spring is meaningful because of the preceding Winter; paradoxically, the Winter "fertilizes" and enhances the abundance of the Spring.

Overall, it's a setup I think encapsulates our broad intentions for Ling Qi's capabilities while allowing room for the structural philosophies to grow and mature over time, including the balance between the different aspects, without too much pain. Incidentally, it's an easy thematic match for our leading elements and accommodates Zeqing's influence without it monopolizing things. It semi-matches Zhengui's thematics too. Still, I'm wary of it being too broad, even with trying to cheat at condensing via balanced 'opposites'.

Which is why slotting perception bolstering effects is worrisome. It can play a part, but the potency comes from somewhere.

I admit I haven't fully caught up on the pages of discussion but I don't think Argent mirror fits for Ling Qi's domain slot.

Firstly I think that people are being wildly, hilariously optimistic in taking the small fluff description as meaning we will always know ourselves completely, not least because it invalidates a lot of potential character growth.

Secondly I don't think it fits into our character or our current domain, and character. The domain we ended up with was 'home and family', and a large portion of Ling Qi's character arc has been that she really doesn't know what she wants, and is still trying to work out who she is and what her goals are apart from building that family. She still doesn't really know herself. Which is good, but doesn't really fit with AM

In terms of domain I think it would have fit much better with the freedom domain. We also have to consider that we are trying to create a coherent domain if we are to have it grow with us. I'm really not sure how people see this fitting into both our current domain and with our other future incorporations.

For example I believe a lot of people intend to incorporate FWM and SCS, but these don't fit too well with both our current domain and AM, and as we grow our domain will require steadily more convoluted explanations on why they represent a coherent, cohesive domain.

[X] Internalize Argent Mirror

She can already navigate illusions and has over 20 dice for those kinds of tests, 4 more is small potatoes compared to a reroll.

Alright, since this seems to be in question with regards to grabbing or not grabbing AM...

I'm voting for the Mirror to be internalised in our domain chiefly because of the self-reflection aspect. From the start of this quest, it's been pretty clear that cultivation isn't about MOAR POWAH! with every cultivation level, but about personality and thematic personal journeys too. Cultivating is not just about cultivating one's body, but also one's spirit, one's soul.

If we're going to be doing landscaping of the soul, I would very, very much like to ensure that we can always clearly see exactly what plants and shrubs are in our garden, or we might accidentally prune away something important.

It'll help us not do the sort of thing that Gu Xiulan did these last few months - how sharply she changed, from the girl who said that 'appearances are power' to one who is solely worried about appearance because she is afraid of what her mother would say? - and keep ourselves largely as we are, even as we delve ever more deeply into the moon-dappled shadows and haunting melodies.
We don't need an art to do that. It is one of the advantages of being the player character that ling qi isn't as likely to go totally batshit because people keep voting for not being monofocused on getting stronger. What happened to xiulan is an npc problem or a deliberate decision by the voters, not something we need to slot argent mirror into our domain to prevent.

Honestly speaking, this sort of thinking is exactly why I dislike the current winning vote.

What you're asking for is an Art. Something that you use for its utility, to be equipped according to need. Something disconnected from everything else about Ling Qi.

A Domain is an integral component of a cultivator's capabilities, a continuous weave with itself and all other aspects of the cultivator. How are you even going to evolve that Domain in the future, with what Arts?

.......we are going to get the self-reflection aspect either way.
