Talking with Han Jian now is not about what can wait or not, it is a sign of respect. It says "I still value you, even though we have grown apart. I still remember your kindness when you had all the power and I did not. I regret that we have grown apart, and that my presence quickened or caused the fracturing of your group." Spending some of the time right before the most important tournament of our life with him shows him our regard for him is no less than it was when he helped us grow strong. He helped us get into elder Zhou's class, which was no small boon. We can show him that we have not forgotten that hand of friendship. Plus, he's a pretty cool guy.

[X] Heizui has, for all his ill temper, been a decent host. Thank him for the time you've spent in the Vale

Some thoughts on the update. I really liked the CRX scene, to me that was the most interesting part of the week.

"That's disappointing," she grumbled. "I guess I'll have to wait then."

We suspected that this was just a fact-finding mission, but I like that IC Ling Qi thought it would just be another effortless challenge.

"For today, close your eyes, and focus on my song, listen and feel, and perhaps you might hear the chorus of tree and flower which supports it."

Music/Wood Art when? I could see a Summoning art that sings wood directly out of the ground to shape into minions.

In what time she did have though, she was sure to offer her congratulations to Cui on her breakthrough, along with a small gift. The second grade rabbit had been caught by Zhengui, but the young spirit was simply too embarrassed to make the gift himself. Ling Qi thought it rather cute.

Hopefully Ling Qi's own social snafus won't ruin Zhengui's chances with the fickle Bai Cui.

The best she could do was at least cultivate a little by sneaking about to spook the spooks, as it were. Still, jobs were drying up in the lead up to the years end, and points were points.

Ling Qi knew she needed the EPC to finish FVM here, she's being a hero.
"No, he's just a stubborn little fuzzball," Su Ling grumbled. "He doesn't like staying in spiritual form, and he won't go off on his own either," she continued. A moment later, her ears twitched, and she sighed. "Yeah, yeah, I know. You want to watch my back."

Seems like Su Ling found the right Spirit Beast for her. He's not big or scary yet but just wait until he's flying her around like some sort of insane Bat-themed vigilante.

"I suppose," Su Ling grumbled good naturedly. "You're lucky I'm not the one who has to re-sharpen the training swords after I blunt them on you, or I wouldn't do this."
Ling Qi laughed. "I'm glad the Sect takes care of it then."

I kind of wonder who does do that, now. Mortals probably couldn't even do it properly, maybe it's scutwork for Reds on punishment duty?
Cai Renxiang's stern voice cut through all the noise though, as clear as day. "The six count clans of Emerald Sea. Minimum profile," the heiress stated tersely, some degree of strain showing from her control of so many vectors of light.

I really liked the CRX training scene. The juxtaposition of studying court politics in the middle of a magic rave was a good comparison to the juxtaposition of having conversations with CRX and Sixiang's silent backtalk simultaneously. Also a lot of crunchy political information that probably helped our EPC here.

"I am pleased to hear it," she replied. "Though the source is a troublesome one, a mastery of such an art will grant you a degree of esteem amongst certain clans."

CRX has mentioned matters of prestige related to learned Arts before, when our mastery of the Bow with FSA was enough to play off political concerns that we didn't know any melee weapon that well.

"Mastering his primary art further in seclusion," her liege replied, and Ling Qi caught a touch of the dry amusement that passed for humor in the heiress tone. "You may have your distraction back soon enough."
Ling Qi frowned playfully at the long haired girls back. She could never tell if the heiress was genuine when it came to the little bits of casual behavior she let slip in her presence.
"Ten million threads to weave a doll, and still it is incomplete," Sixiang sighed. "Just because she knows how to speak to you, doesn't mean she understands."
Well, wasn't that a cheerful thought, Ling Qi mused, hurrying to catch back up.

Sad that we missed out on the GG minor completely. It seems like CRX is cracking a joke here, but Sixiang suggests this is just as mechanical as everything else she does, carefully calculated to appeal to Ling Qi's regard for organic friendships and personal attachment. At least it means she cares, either way.

If it's not about whether it can wait or not, then it should wait in favor of something that is a factor for. Talking with him afterwards, when we have nothing to gain from him, as a thank you and as recognizing his role in helping us to get where we are would be just as meaningful. We've already had a good final conversation before the tournament with him, and it amounted to a mutual understanding that we were on passably good terms but there would be no punches pulled if we met in the ring.

I don't see what people think they're going to accomplish by throwing another action at him. When we invest is nearly as important as investing at all, and just because people feel bad that we're drifting apart doesn't mean throwing an action at him to just talk about whatever is going to fix it. Better to leave it until after, when we can either congratulate or try to reassure him, and focus on an action that's actually time sensitive, like stopping ourselves have another relationship decay.

We've skipped at least two socials in a row with Heizui, and while our relationship with Han seems likely to settle into something moderately positive with only a bit of intermittent effort, our relationship with the dragon is far more volatile.

So what? We got what we wanted, access to his site. If it's limited to only outer sect disciples then who cares if he gets salty since we can't go to it after. If it's not it can wait till after the tournament.

"Avenging Crescent Bats are paranoid little guys," Sixiang mused. "Your friend must have a pretty strong sense of justice to snag one."
Vengeance flying puppy!! Aligned to the Bloody Moon, attracted to those who seek justice! It's a pity Ling Qi will never get the opportunity to bind one: her sense of justice as an ideal is severely attenuated.

(Who would have thought it would be Su Ling that sought the ideal of the hero of justice? Instead of Ling Qi, street rat protagonist, or Li Suyin, noble scholar idealist?)

Though, I wonder. The association of the Bloody Moon with justice and law enforcement is relatively new, it was previously established. Previous associations were more morally neutral. How quickly did this new species arise, and where from?

"Meng clan, controls the western marshes. Staunch Weilu conservatives. Former ties with the Bai, backed Sun Shao. Neutral and distant at court. Isolanist"
Borders both Thousand Lakes and Red Sun Garden. Meizhan hates them on principle, and Ling Qi will mirror that if the Meng do the pantsless thing. However, they'll probably be supportive of future "Turn the Red Sun Garden into a frozen Moon-eaten wasteland" efforts. Probably not a great source of allies, though they might have cultivated Moon-aligned spirits over Sun, to prevent subversion by the Red Sun spirits. That might be a source of Moon arts.

"Wang and Jia, smallest clans, territories in the southern hills, between the Sects. Nominally Imperial conservatives. Mining interests. Elevated by the Duchess. Loyal and supportive at court. Pushing aggressive moves against the Cloud Tribes."
The newest clans, whose territories are claimed from clans kin to the Thunder Crows clan the Sect genocided a while back. Young and expansionist, they're only nominally Imperial in their party line—the Throne does not wish to expand south wise at this junction.

We'll probably be closely working with these guys in the sequel quest.

"Bao clan, wealthiest of the seven, controls the northern trade cities and the routes into Celestial peaks. Imperial conservatives. Mercantile inclinations, heavy production focus. Neutral at court. Opposes further military expansion in the south."
Hey, Suyin is from the northern trade cities, isn't she? Is Bao Qingling trying to steal a march on us?!

"Luo clan, keepers of the eastern marches. Ties to Golden Fields, on the rise due to recovery in neighbors and increased trade. Nominal Weilu conservatives. Did not support the Duchess, did not oppose, found loyal. Warrior clan, large presence in military. Aggressive in general."
Borders Golden Fields, probably cultivated Sun spirits as allies with the Lu Sun spirits. Unfortunately not likely to be a great source of Moon spirit arts, but they're natural allies since Ling Qi is on good terms with prominent Golden Fields clans. Fortunately, they're likely be a large presence in the border forces we'll be working with during the sequel quests, so we'll have plenty of opportunities to make inroads with them.

In conclusion, Emerald Seas is ridonkulously huge. The province borders four other provinces, each of which is entirely controlled by one clan each. Indubitably there are massive tracts of land that are in practice uncontrolled by any clan, but the province borders has to stretch from the Red Sun Garden, to the massive waters of Thousand Lakes, to the huge mountain ranges of Heavenly Peaks, to Golden Fields. That's...big.

Meizhan is a guaranteed lock, so I'll just vote for the other option I desperately want. Han Jian's decayed relationship with Ling Qi is one of my greatest disappointments with what the thread voted for, and I'll like to take this last opportunity for this thread to fix that. Additionally, Han Jian is the first year mate Ling Qi spoke to at the beginning of the year, and it'll be a nice bookend if he's the last, too. That satisfies my narrative sensibilities.

[X] An Eye to the future

An adequate plan, that doesn't do shit like think Ling Qi's formations are capable of peer-level combat.

And by that token we got what we wanted from Han, basic instruction on cultivating and a group to help keep us safe and support us until we could stand on our own. Obviously both of the options are draws because of the characters, though if you really want to look at it in a strictly mechanical way, then the dragon clearly has more to offer, since the service provided by staying on his good side could be ongoing. Looking at it as keeping on good terms with the characters, then Heizui is more pressing because he has had several actions illustrating him chafing under us using his site with Zhengui while Han is about as friendly as could be expected considering our past decision to focus on other people over him.

The whole point is that it's not about a purely cold mercantile exchange.

One situation was when we were in a position of weakness and had nothing to bargain with and we were still helped while the other we were the stronger party and we STILL bargained for a resource and provided services for that resource.

Han Jian didn't owe us a damn thing and still helped us out.

Like I said, "Han Jian is never on fire, that's why it's fine to ignore him" is what brought us here. It's not that we don't understand where you are coming from, it's that a certain degree of trust was lost when the Han Jian relationship was abandoned for so long that his SL became pretty much capped and he didnt regard us as a friend but rather a friend of a friend. You aren't going to ever convince me, for example, that you won't argue against Han Jian next time or the time after that or the time after that. At one point we had people claiming Han Jian was secretly in cahoots with Sun Liling in order to get us not to vote for his SL.

Friendship in particular and relationships in general is about making time for people. If you always decide that someone isn't worth your time than obviously they are right to think that you aren't their friend.

I still want him to be a friend that's it, that's all. o3o

I still want him to be a friend that's it, that's all. o3o
And I think leaving him with a mildly positive view of us is good enough for now if it lets us not completely loose Heizui. I wasn't here for the stuff you're referring to, but you are right that I'd vote for anything pressing over "try to go talk to Han about...stuff?", specifically because we've already started to grow apart from him. For me, maintaining our other relationships, especially our closer ones, takes precedence over trying to rebuild one that isn't all that helpful to us anymore anyways. And to be frank I don't find him nearly as interesting as most of the other characters we've met.

Still, it doesn't really sound like this is going to get anywhere productive, and I think we've all laid out enough points that any late voter will get the gist. Shall we stop here?

It matters a great deal whether she cares for Ling Qi or she cares for Ling Qi's power and talent and skills. I'm not positively inclined towards her (or her route...still moderately salty that yrsillar favored her so heavily accidentally or not), so I lean towards the latter, but at the moment it's not actually clear which is true.

It's more likely the perception and outward behavior of Bloody Moon spirits that's changed, rather than their range of species, IMO. These were probably aspects that were already present but less popular that have recently increased in prominence, rather than totally new associations.
In conclusion, Emerald Seas is ridonkulously huge. The province borders four other provinces, each of which is entirely controlled by one clan each.
Uh, I'm pretty sure each of those other provinces also has count clans and barons and such. For example, we've heard of Wei and Huang being counts under Zheng in Ebon Rivers.

Nobody seems to be interested in the talisman descriptions yet. Here are a couple for Zhengui. If people come up with better more liked ones I will use them instead.

Flaming Frond Sash. This small sash is made from a single tropical leaf, and covered with enticing fire artwork that seems to dance as it moves. Physically worn by Zhen. The wearer's Fire and Wood Arts cost 2 less Qi, reducing them to a minimum cost of 1. They also gain a +3 bonus on offensive clashes with Fire and Wood Arts.

Ashen Branch Necklace. This thick necklace is shaped like a tangle of roots and vines, but on inspection is actually composed entirely of fused ash. A trace of it rubs off when you touch it, but it never seems to wear down. Physically worn by Gui. The wearer's Fire and Wood Arts cost 2 less Qi, reducing them to a minimum cost of 1. They also gain a +3 bonus on defensive clashes when a Fire or Wood Art is active.

I enjoy formations and wish to continue our studies, but I don't feel they're beneficial for the tournament. The projects we're capable of achieving with our time left aren't refined enough, and we can't replenish them mid-tournament.

Not too sure what the plan should be, honestly. I feel like the Horror is bound to be bad/almost useless considering how little time we've put into the project. On the other hand, maybe a bad minion is better than no minion at all.

A bad green minion that can give us temporary health boxes in a pinch if ours get destroyed is better than no minion at all imo.

Speaking of which, what's yrsillar's stance on using omake points to improve our formations? That might be worth the effort IMO.

As long as it's paired with an action actually developing them, it's fine.

Right now, people who are sitting on Omake Rewards should consider spending them proactively, because they're probably going to go away after the tournament!

Adding in plan vote
[X] An Eye to the future

Formations won't improve enough to be actually useful in tournament in 2 actions - baring a complete rework of how formations function (aka going narrative on them next year). For reference, Ossuary Horror currently has base dice of 27 and rolls in the low 30s since it can use techs (it's from the era where yrsiller expected dice to be in the 30s). Our defense and offense are shaping up in the high 40s and peaking low 50s. Do we think we can get 10 dice on them with 2 actions? Let's not spend 21 YSS on something that can't hit shit and get a head start on what we need to be doing in the next year.

I could support a serious archive action, problem being what? And then meridian space (drop FSA?). Maybe FSA+ finally? But that also has/will fall behind on dice since we are no longer focusing on supporting it with our loadout.

I would point out that we'll really want some consumables for the tournament. And those are expensive.
