I think Fang can be placed in basically any of the groups except the first 3, and whichever group Han Jian and Xiulan are in, assuming Han Jian and Xiulan are grouped together.

Also, have come up with another possible grouping based on 1) monsters dominate alone, 2) Elders want Greens, 3) Elders want to give a good show, 4) Elders prefer nobility to non-nobility

Groups
1: Sun
2: Bai
3: Cai
4: Chu Song, Han Jian, Xiulan
5: Ji Rong
6: Guangli
7: Ling Qi, Kang, Lu Feng
8: Assorted mooks

Put Han Jian and Xiulan in group 4 instead of 5 because I think Elders would prefer JR get in (having higher talent) than Chu Song. In the above scenario, I think Han Fang would be in group 5, 6, or 8.
 
I honestly think Ling Qi has a good chance unless the Elders do something bullshit like place her in a group with Cai and Guangli or Sun and Ji Rong, which I very much doubt they'll try since I'm sure they'll want to show off their best disciples in the final 16.

Even if we get placed in the same group as Han Jian, Han Fang, and Xiulan, I still think we have a good chance. I mean, crowds of mooks? Complete chaos? That' Ling Qi's bread and butter, and it might actually regenerate Qi for her. Xiulan is more more about bursts and sprints. Han Jian can mitigate that to some extent, but in that situation, I think he'd be fine with pushing Xiulan and Ling Qi through.

Maybe she made the calculation that if she failed an attempt now, she could recover lost spiritual through cultivating arts?

Considering his views when we were training those disciples it's likely he has at least decent spiritual defence. I can see the fight going similar to the dragon: could swing either way depending on if he can land a hit.

A couple of points here.

First of all, I feel like Late Yellow encompasses Peak Yellow, so calling Xiulan the former doesn't mean she isn't also the latter. Still, that is a weak objection, and apparently @Arkeus has a PM WoG about it, so I agree that Xiulan failed a breakthrough there.

A shame, but she has already had a chance to recover. Remember that we took her to the white room this week? That was AFTER he failed breakthrough. So she doesn't actually need to use the white room this week.

As for her being lonely - maybe. But you will note that in my plan, we are spending time with her already, as a Major. Admittidly that isn't as interactive as the minor, but I think it is generally a good idea to spread minors out, not clump them all together. We just talked to Xiulan; give it a week.

Finally, re: learning about the Inner Sect before we talk to Cai. I concede that point could be of value, though I question the extent of this value. I'm having a hard time imagining what we could learn about the inner sect that would make our break our decision one way or another.

Even current Ling Qi has good odds of getting in the top 8, as the fight against the dragon shows. Tournament Ling Qi should have PLR2/AE4/FSS3 equipped, as well as FVM6/TRF5/SCS6, and Zhengui being significantly stronger as well a flying sword.

I would be very surprised if we end up in a bracket where we can't laugh and laugh as we solo them all. Ling Qi very much specced for group combat.

The real difficulty is for getting in the Top 5, and the mission impossible is Top 3.

There is a significant debate on how the inner sect works and if it's a good environment for us, be it atmosphere, art or other resource wise. I'd like to get more info there for that debate.

Has the math of a mission versus a major training action been done in detail with regards to total progress on arts? I'm not really clear on what the opportunity cost there is.

There's still a lot of room for the groupings to screw us or pave our way. If the monsters fight each other on the other side of the bracket, then we could fight our way into the finals before being mercilessly crushed. On the other hand, we could have Sun Liling in our group stage and she could ignore everyone else while knocking us out of the running.

A 'Sun Liling in bracket' would basically be a question of beating everyone else before she beats us, yeah, which.... is not impossible, but is very, very hard.

Probably the hardest scenario there is, barring a 'Sun Liling + Ji Rong' in our bracket :(
 
In light of the fact that missions are getting scrambled after this week, I feel like the balance has shifted in favor of taking a mission this week despite doing the Moon Quest already.

I find it very unlikely the Elders would do that. They want a good show for the audience, so we should at least get into the top 16 rather than being knocked out so early.

You mean, pure random chance? That might, for example put Bai and Sun or Sun and Cai in the same group right at the start of the tournament, thus almost guaranteeing that one of those extremely promising noble kids will not get into the Inner Sect this year?

That seems very unlikely. Also, we will be tested plenty as part of the top 16, where noble audience members (whom the Sect depends on for patronage) can actually focus on our fight instead of it being part of a mad scramble.

Remember, the whole reason there's an audience is that the Sect wants to show off. They can't show off properly if their most promising disciples get ganked before they can show their stuff in a proper one-on-one.

I prefer the Lost and Found mission--Ling Qi's flute and comb feel like bait, and may well come up when her mother comes into town, so learning more about heirloom spirits would be nice--but I seem to be outvoted.
