"Ha, I'm not so sure about that," Han Jian replied, shaking his head. He glanced over at Han Fang, who nodded back once, heading for the entrance to the training yard. Ling Qi watched him go for a moment. She had never gotten to know the silent boy, and she regretted that a little, he seemed like a reliable sort. "I honestly don't see myself breaking through before time runs out, so I've decided to more fully develop my arts," she turned her attention back to him as he spoke up again, dismissing the idle thought.
Well that's strange! To my understanding, Han Jian's Talent lies several steps behind of Kang Zihao, who has only recently broken through to the third realm. If he worked hard at it, and took advantage of the White Room, Han Jian could probably break through to at least Bronze by tournament time. He's the counterpart to Kang Zihao, after all, as Gan Guangli and Ling Qi are the counterparts to Lu Feng and Ji Rong.
Though, he might be wary of forcing himself, after his many failures breaking through to Yellow/Silver. By firming up his art foundation, as he probably didn't for his second realm breakthrough, and using the White Room to bring him closer to, but not past, the brink of breakthrough... He should have been one of the top contenders of the year. With the remainder of this year spent on his foundation, his chances next year are sky-high. If Xiulan doesn't pass this year, the entire Golden Fields group might be able to take up fully half of the available spaces on their own.
"Yeah," Han Jian replied simply. "Yu is a good guy at heart… but I'm worried he's going to crash and burn, I'm trying to keep his spirits up, but there's only so much I can do if he doesn't want it himself."
This is a striking quote, placed in comparison to what we thought was going on earlier in the year. Before, we thought Han Jian disliked Fan Yu, only staying together because their fathers demanded it. Now, it seems Han Jian holds some affection for Fan Yu, if only because he's so pitiful in both bearing the brunt of Gu Xiulan's fury and in his lacking cultivation.
Also... if Fan Yu's despondency continues, even to next year. Gu Xiulan doesn't even need to demonstrate her surpassing talent and ability to her family to break off the engagement. Provided both their trajectories remain the same, Fan Yu's family will break it off for her, as Fan Yu proves to be a drag and waste of resources.
That aside though, Han Jian made no effort to conceal the fact that the Golden Fields was a harsh place, further east one went, the toxic and poisonous the lands outside clan territory became. The earth itself was tainted with sun and death qi, cultivators below the third realm who ventured out unprotected into the poison sands could quickly sicken and die, their meridians catching fire and their flesh rotting from their bones, and even higher cultivators could grow ill without regular cleansing. It took great effort from the clans to maintain their borders and prevent the poison from spreading back into cleansed lands, which was why actual expansion was such a generational affair.
Important things to note for the Gu Route:
- Abandon all thoughts on expanding our holdings in land area terms. It's simply impossible, and we're going to be struggling to hold what we have in the first place.
- The ruin exploration of the route is locked behind high cultivation. Ling Qi can be expected to be Cyan by the time she actually comes to settle there, but in the meantime, we can't expect much more than trinkets to come from Gu Tai during our time in the Sect military.
- It's entirely possible that we'll eventually make our house on Zhengui's back and travel in style around our territory. Mobile Fortress Zhengui is entirely within the cards, and possibly something the Gu will provide concessions for during negotiations.
- Suyin is going to have her hands supremely full cleansing the toxins from Ling Qi's and Gu Tai's body. If Meizhan will have a bad reaction to what Suyin currently does massaging breakthrough-backlash from Ling Qi, she'll flip at the handmaiden/wife/husband threesome medical play.
"Nah, this is just punishment detail." She looked back to the other girl, who had taken the opportunity to catch her breath. "What'd we learn today?"
"To follow the plan," Ma Lei replied, between ragged breaths, her tone good natured despite the grumbling. "...and that I can't stop a Centennial Crag Boar head on yet."
Aww! Su Ling has her own minions! Now that's definitely adorable. (Also, this shows the wonders of delegation. Now that the Ma sisters are under Su Ling, this removes one (1) minor from our minor hell! We still have oh god too many, but that's oh god too many minus 1!)
The running tracker of minions bonds: Ling Qi --> Suyin --> Su Ling --> Ma sisters.
The song that flowed from her flute was a happier one than her usual fare. It spoke of first meetings and admiration, of growing safety and confidence, sheltered by another's strength. It spoke of affection and repayment, a desire to stand as equals, to support and be supported. Her music spoke of all these things and so much more echoing out over the clear water of the lake.
Oh this is beautiful. Especially since, with the Music meridian, Ling Qi is dooting it directly into Meizhan's soul. If Ling Qi's friendship with Meizhan continues to the time when Ling Qi needs to create her own arts to advance, I really think this song should form the foundation of an art. At least, it's fundamentally about one of the cores of Ling Qi's burgeoning Domain.
I expect one of the bottlenecks in the progression through Third Realm is the art suite: without a coherent art suite matching your Domain, you simply are unable to create the Foundation, Framing, Fortification, etc. In other words, without a foundation of similar arts, a cultivator simply becomes unable to develop their domain according to their desires. Thus, a song -- an art -- based on the people who Ling Qi regards as Family will probably be a necessity sometime in the future.
(I wonder what song Ling Qi will make of the people who helped her, even those she left, like that old man that gave her blankets, or that boy she abandoned, or even Han Jian? It's more suited to the bonfire Domain choice, but Ling Qi's mental and emotional health might be better if she remembered everyone who helped her. Her aesthetics currently might be a cozy house in the middle of a dark storm, but perhaps her hearth will be warmer if fed with all her relationships rather than just her closest?)
