@Questor
...Some-country will BURN :rage::anger::mad:
Not now, not tomorrow, but they will.

I agree with most SVers here, for now, we won't make any OVERT hostile moves, but slowly build our forces, influence.
Yes, diplomacy will be the 1st thing we use as a cover to get our spies in. We need information, because, around this time period, multiple warlords, unethical monsters, tyrants, etc. exist and control many lands (in a way they are the "only" powers in the world. ESPECIALLY in fantasy, magic-heavy realms).
But pirate "stronghold" will have to go. (though they might be "sponsored" buy that slaver country to do so ("deniability"), so will have to be careful here.)

But I wonder. With a name "Maretonia"
it might be pony controlled,
Or only males are slaves (I mean most equine hoards are matriarchal)

Either way, we have to play this medium-term. They go against what our Empire and our Allies values. This country is hostile no matter what they lie.

That and Crystal Ponies and soon others will go BALLISTIC if we let this CANCER exist for too long.
Heh, RGRE is silly. But possible, it's more likely a pun for the pun gods though.

Well my advice on this would be to find/support a peaceful moderate faction if possible for Yaks as we don't need militaristic state on our borders.
For pirates, I say we let Neighpon intervene and give them island.
As for Maretonia, we should deal with it patiently, preferably when we had fortified Crystal Protectorate .

Issue there is that our people are currently slaves, and the trail for them is growing cold. The longer we wait, the harder it will be to find them.

That line doesn't have to be purely "WE SEE YOU AS BAD SO WERE GOING TO CONQUER YOU" kinda sets a bad precedent, we should try Diplo and Intrigue first.

That's basically what I said. But the line should be somewhere around " your trying to take our people as slaves after we told you don't so now it's war" I'm all for diplo and intrigue, hell in hoping we can use our spies to recover our people themselves.

Our spies have already proven themselves adept at freeing slaves from a mind controlling sorcerer. I'm sure these new contacts would be comparatively tame. (Don't make me eat my words, Questor)

Doing that line means that we need to respect it wich means that if they do it we go to war or lose face.

My line would be if you wish a cordinal relationship with us you need to respect our people.

That's what I just said. Only difference is that if they keep trying to take our people it's war. Which it should be.

In Maretonia's defense, they weren't taking anyone, that was the pirates, who sold them to a merchant and who the hell knows where they went from there, they might not even be in Maretonia anymore. And the government probably isn't responsible for every purchase ever made.
You act like our armies are not already at full strength. Yes we can recruit more and yes we can build more but our army is ready to go.
No, he's acting like our people just got out of a war for their very survival, and are currently in the middle of another war to clean up their heartland, so they probably aren't eager to get into a third war with a nation we know basically jack shit about in literally any respect.

Crystal Protectorate was just saved from a tyrant. It is in ruins and largely depended on our support.
There are no fortifications to protect civilians, reliable logistics to supply our army's .
Not to mention that our own empire just got out from brutal war .

I'm advocating for no war as well dammit but our armies are ready should we need them. And should we need them to defend then they will be able to do so.

Seriously, don't jump straight to war, try all the other options while we prepare. Hopefully we don't need to do more than prepare because the other options work. If and when they fail we'll be ready to march.

That means send spies and diplomats while we fortify the protectorate, rebuild our armies, and have commander patrick move the peregine wall.

Hopefully the wall gets to do nothing but become a fancy ass training post and military trading spot, those armies get to warp their swords as plows, and those fortifications get to act as naught more than domestic infrastructure for the protectorate.

However, in doing this we're prepared so that if war is to come the wall may stop invasion, the fortification may guard and feed our people, and those armies may fight to protect us.

Those pirates are weird. Why in the name of God Emperor Koryuu would they only take cargo and personnel, leaving perfectly good ships behind to drift? You can sell those things! Those merchantmen are probably worth more than the wares they carry!

There has to be a reason, but I'm drawing a blank here.
One answer is species difference and wind/tide issues. Griffon ships can reasonably be assumed to not include little things like ladders, as the entire crew can just as easily move up and down as walk across the deck. Secondly, those ships are recognizable and easily traced.
Third, pirates don't typically have the crew to sail multiple ships, as every member is less pay for everyone else.

We really can't afford a new war (we just barely escaped the last one now, starting a new one will prove expensive, moral breaking and messy as it will make us look like warmongers...)

Overall I say we use intrigue options. We infiltrate, find out who bought our people as slaves then Cause a few... "Accidents" and retrieve our people.

After that we can slowly work on destabilising Maretonia as we won't be on a timer to retrieve the enslaved.

E.g for destabilising Maretonia we can arrange for "a assassination of the leader and skeleton in closet reveals, also slave culture will probably mean they have people who the debt slave in the culture, we approach a resentful family member and "give a nudge to boost his influence and encourage a revolution/civil war"...

Evil?...
Yes
but so is slavery
Of course if we do this we need to ensure our agents are up to snuff (we really have not invested in improving them...)

Actually most pirate crews were rather large. Their preferred method of capturing ships was to intimidate the targeted ship into surrendering and having a large crew helped with that. Whether or not they kept the ships afterwards depended on the size of the captured ship and/or if there own ship suffered any damage during the confrontation as the captured ship could be stripped down for useful materials.

I do wonder how many of the pirates we can press-gang into our navy. Or course we will need a navy first. And any pirate that has actually raided us will face retribution. But we probably will not need to raid the entirety of Libertalia. Offer coin and their fellow pirates might sell them out.

Come to think of it, there had to be a lot of pirates involved in those attacks. I mean, am I wrong in remembering that most of the Griffons are armed and at least have some basic combat training?

Like, the pirates had to have had a secret weapon or something to minimize their casualties, right? Otherwise, raiding our ships wouldn't be worth the casualties, right?

Navies at the time also employed prize crews, a skeleton crew that would sail captured ships, usually merchant vessels or damaged enemy vessels back to the nearest friendly port, to either have the ship repaired, sell it, or have it broken for repairs to other naval vessels in the port.

They came to an understanding of each other's languages. The Qilin were very thorough in their investigations.

Very thorough, huh?

"Tenno Heika, here are the documents you requested."

"... Why are there two stacks....?"

"This stack is their general language. Naval terminology. Raiding routes." The qilin then pointed to the other, far larger, stack, "And this is a compendium of their languages curse words."

"... Theres quite a lot there, is there not?"

"These ponies do have a rather... colorful language, to match their varied personage, tenno heika."

Omake: A Pirate's life for me! @Questor

The Sea of Selene was quiet, too quiet. The pony with an eyepatch looked out from the tavern on Port Royal on Libertalia at the setting sun, idly sipping his cider. Down in the plaza was the auction for slaves. The auction master cried out, "... and what will ye all bid for this fine mare" and pulled forward a crystal mare with an inactive Sombra helmet on her head, "She's a fine fighter and not a bad looker either! She'd make a fine addition to any of ye crews! Bidding starts at 350 pieces of silver!"

The grizzled pony sat back and watched the various ponies and other races bid on the crystal pony. They seemed to miss something important, not surprising, few people noticed things on this island until it was staring right in front of them, and that was that Sombra was gone. He gestured to the wench to fill up his goblet with more wine. Sombra being gone would affect things here on Libertalia, and while the North has always been a bit of mystery rumors percolate. A Warrior Queen, an Immortal God King Eagle, and a Dragon Emperor, for years they were just that... rumors. They had to be rumors since Sombra was very much a real threat, but Sombra was gone... and it made this old man think there might have been a grain of truth to those rumors. He saw his loyal lieutenant, who was also his wife trot in with a smirk, that was never good. She wasn't even wearing her good eyepatch

"My Dear, the Crimson Comet is 10 days late, and you come in smiling." he drowned the last of his goblet, "Go ahead say it mare."

His unicorn wife sat down across from him, "I told you we shouldn't send those raids north" she said adjusting her eyepatch. Damn things were always itchy. "Sparrow's told us what he saw before those Neighponese picked up our ship."

"Damn it all!" it was a risk but he had bet on the Sombra power vacuum causing enough chaos to pick up some coin from Neighpon. It apparently didn't. "Come to gloat that we should have kept doing business with the Sheiks of Maretonia?"

She chortled, "Oh indeed. Spice trade is always profitable, even if the Sheiks have a tendency to take eyes."

The stallion resigned himself to the fate of his wife always being right, even if he led a company of "privateers" who did a bit of freelancing his wife had the better sense when it came to business. "So what really happened to our crew?"

The wife adjusted her eyepatch showing the crystal artifact that replaced the eye she lost to a Maretonian guard years ago, it glowed, "We need to get out of the business of raiding north. I fear that we might have awoken a sleeping giant. Griffons, Diamond Dogs, Crystal Equines and all the races of Neighpon?"

The old pony glowered and shook his head, "That eye of yours tells you that?"

His wife shrugged, "It shows me what our captain sees, and Captain Loose Lips never could keep a secret. He's told the Qilin and likely the Griffons about Libertalia and Maretonia. He hasn't mentioned us thankfully cause he's not an idiot and I would personally take his tongue. However we should move to Maretonia."

The husband looked out at the auction still going on, now a Griffon male slave who was giving the guards a bit of trouble, and needed to be restrained by two pegasi, "Should we tell anyone else about what's coming for Port Royal?"

His wife laughed, "Darling, we need them to buy time for our escape before they get here. I say nuts to Port Royal"

OOC: Not my best but something piqued my interest about a husband and wife pirate team who's first reaction is to run and leave Libertalia rather than fight the might what they think is coming for them
@Questor just so you dont miss one.
