It will protect the equipped troops from magic, but unless they are standing right next to the magic users in your own army it won't do anything to affect them. It resists magic, but it doesn't act like a constant magical EMP.
Could we (theoretically) spray Orichalcum dust over the battlefield? Would minute amounts of Orichalcum over entirety of the battlefield affect our allies, or anyone really?

I have a feeling that at least for the near future Orichalcum is going to be limited to at most our elite units or at least hero units. Though I personally see it going to hero units and a special type of elite unit.

Theoretically maybe we could spray the dust and it might have an effect. The issue is that we can't turn the ingots for metals into dust. The metal is just a little too durable and tough to be turned into a dust form at the moment maybe once we have the machine tools and we tip them with some of the metal itself we might be able to.

That's why it's theoretical.
With industry and better materials, which will happen eventually, it could be a real option.
Not good for a any singular foe, but a hypothetical magical swarm (hordes of changeling disguised as bushes, rocks, etc.?)?

Personally I am happy with just our grand masters and the knights of the inner circle of all the orders having them. With that we can have a few good men to take out any magic users without having to go for some crazy wonder projects.

Plus it will be good to have such a major mark of prestige to be given out to our best knight, those sort of thing are very useful for medieval politics.

I think it is also worth noting that we seem to have only the one Orichalcum ore vein, meaning that unless we find another, that is all we get once it runs dry. Grinding up the stuff into dust and using it bombs and gas would make it next to impossible to reclaim with current tech. It seems incredibly wasteful to do that with such a precious resourse.

Remember, you only have the one deposit of this stuff, and it's durability makes it difficult to mine in large amounts. This is a limited resource.

Orchialcum Dust would be to wasteful - my proposal would be chain nets with every so-manyth link made from oricalcum - perfect to catch a smoke form or any other magical beastie. Wearing it yourself might disrupt any attempts to scry you, or whatever you smuggle out or in (like the Crystal Heart, or Explosives, ideally replacing one with the other)

Hmm, since QM has confirmed only active magic is affected by orichalcum, do people think it will disrupt Sombra's smoke form? Is it an innate ability of his or something he had to learn and/or consciously cast?

Edit: As a matter of fact, it might be better to separate 'passive' and 'active' magic into 'internal' and 'external' types of magic, with orichalcum only affecting magic it can touch.

Not actually as far as you think. We already have the beginnings of locomotion. We've already started laying metal tracks with carts, we have early steam technology, and we do have the option to make machine tools we just didn't take it this turn. I think once we take the tool option we should be able to make better technology and other forms of industrial tech. nowhere near the level of the actual Industrial revolution but some of the stuff that was around during the late Renaissance is probably available to us.

Define amounts. Kilograms? Tons?

Would it be enough for weapons/shields/armors for only hero units? knights of the inner circles? Restraints for dangerous prisoners?

At least it makes for good gifts for other countries' leaders.

I wonder if it would work against even Discord..

Also against changeling's shape shifting. Instead of dispelling it it might simply lock them in their current form.

I would hope we have enough to equip the Knightly Orders with orichalcum swords at least, and the Grandmasters and Royal family with full armor of the stuff.

Discord, by his very nature, doesn't make sense. I would imagine no 'ordinary' magic or magical material would do anything to him. For something to affect him, it would either need to be the opposite of his powers (Elements of Harmony), overpower him (unlikely), take him by suprise, or some combination thereof.

Maybe... but just imagine the face on Discord as he casually snaps his fingers to try and get rid of an annoying knight... only to have it do nothing then get bashed in the face by his mace.

Rule of funny, why wouldn't he lose to some good old slapstick? It's a perfect end.

I am pretty sure orichalcum would just no-sell Changling shapeshifting. By the obviously magical green fire effect, it is not a 'physical' transformation (meaning it is not done using biological means a la Blacklight). It is something that needs to be actively cast, so it should mean that the transformation is an active magical effect, which means that it is disruptable.

This is sounding like Orichalcum is a Strategic Resource now. Like weapon's grade uranium irl. So we, the Emperor, will need to lock it down so as to both limit its spread, and maximize our utility of the metal.

I mean, I guess. I could only imagine that working once though. Unless were talking about fighting Discord after 1000 years of his imprisonment and our advancement, I don't think we would have fully, magically-null, armor. There are gaps in any armor that I could see him worm his way through to poke at the birbcat inside.

So lock down any Orichalcum mines as Imperial property (properly reimbursed), offer some ludicrous rates of purchase/reward for future sources, and make it stupidly illegal to trade in it unauthorized, much less theft.

While this is a problem i consider it a short term one. Now that we know orichalcums traits its should be much easier to locate viens of it. On end of the spectrum you can use magic to test where the anti effect is, like diamond dog tunneling magic and/or yak shamans, and on the far end we can use geology to find more. Machine tools and power tools should boost production as they are far better than basic tools, doublely so if they are orichalcum.

I wouldn't be surprised if the metal isn't even native to our region at all, or even that this could be the ONLY vein that exists, because Disord Fuckery.

(Explaining away possible bad future rolls for discovery~)

I would not be surprised if Orichalcum ONLY exists because Discord in the first place - Concentrated Reality (or former metals and minerals imbued with it) either as an immune reaction by Reality itself as a result of Discord's reality warping, or simply (for lack of a better word) all the Reality that was displaced by him (like rock is displaced by a glacier), compressed in some locations and (for lack of a better word) crystallizing into Orichalcum.

Eh, maybe but i doubt it. At that point it would be Too rare to be very useful really as we expand our supply of it would cease to meet our needs. I am considering it to be the evivalent to rare earths or other rare but not insanely rare materials, so more uranium and less iridium/osmilum. I also expect us to find more naturally occuring magical materials going forward. This is mlp afteral and it would be boring otherwise.
