-[x] Make the pass into a killing corridor, set up the flamethrowers and pikes/shields up front to keep as much of the army from advancing while we set up cannons up and a little away from the frontlines for damage, furthermore we could have ddogs dig under the enemies and set off explosives and make sinkholes. Have griffs flying above the enemy dropping lit explosives and molotovs, have the yaks ready to rush forward if our lines start to break.

So let's say for a moment we win then what do we do? with our border to him in all honesty I don't think Sombra would be the kind of person to just randomly send monsters or minions to are lands. Either he brings a large army or none at all so I don't think that making a giant ass wall will be needed and while the crystal empire will be dangerous sure it's not like in warhammer fantasy we're there is going a bunch of chaos daemons and mutated monsters everywhere trying to get into your lands. However that is just me.

Depends on exactly what is left of Sombra's kingdom if we win, considering the numbers, it's quite possible he has brought every able bodied pony in his kingdom. if that is so then the crystal empire may no longer exist outside of those few left behind to maintain the kingdom.

Also regarding the comment about warhammer fantasy and chaos, don't give the GM ideas :). Some of those creatures Sombra brought could the the equivalent to Dresden Files Outsiders especially the ones that hurt our scouts to look at. Which means that their mere presence could corrupt the land.

We have already talked about how there is no way this is the end of Sombra in this one battle. We have also said before that he definitely has more at home. lastly this dam kid show is already a death world chaos would fit right on in.

The thing is though will we have the numbers to continue into his lands after this fight? I mean the bulk of our force is made up of militia who only join the main army when defending our lands, who knows if the yaks will keep fighting after this, and this is saying nothing in how many causalities we might take.

Omake: The Duke’s Court of Guaneto (Canon)
Omake: The Duke's Court of Guaneto

The Feathrisian League had voted for integration... It is not what his father would have wanted but the young Duke Clawsirae was not his father. His father died just weeks before the Council of Griffonstone, and although it was quite likely that one of his father's numerous enemies did him in, Clawsirae was not willing to take vengeance. In fact he might have toasted the assassin, Rodbirdo was not a particularly warm father, and always favored his brother over him. Clawsirae smiled to himself, but then again his brother died in the War with Aquilla, against the now Emperor Golden Feather. While at one point Clawsirae did aspire to be the great unifier when he was just a student at the College of Cardinals in Griffonstone, Garrick took that chance. His opinion of the Emperor mattered little ultimately. No... the time for war was passed he had thought, and it was unlikely Garrick's empire would last beyond his life, not without some external threat he thought. He looked at his sister Lucrawsia modeling for a portrait by Leobyrdo.

"Tell me dear sister, why are you smiling today?"

His sister merely amplified her enigmatic smile, "Brother, you agreed to stay out of my love life"

Clawsirae gave a huff, "To a point, you need a husband."

His sister just flexed her claw inspecting it, until a paintbrush whacked her on the head. Clawsirae chortled, one does not interrupt the great Leobyrdo of Falconci without accepting some risks. Oh he was definitely a genius of the same standing as Archimedes in the Emperor's court, but he was too interested in painting, and flight, and all other manner of inventions. Clawsirae was lucky to recruit him when he did, "Leobyrdo, I need to talk with my sister, why don't you take a break? I believe I saw a courier deliver some post from Griffonia today. Perhaps your colleague Archimedes has issued a new challenge"

Leobyrdo adjusted his hat, and scoffed, "That pyromaniac has no appreciation for the subtler sciences. If it can't be ignited it is beneath his interest." He said before trotting out to the balcony and flying to his own tower, Clawsirae shook his head and returned to look at his sister who was fidgeting by preening her wings.

"Lucrawsia..." he stated as he sat back behind his desk. It had been his father's old desk, but instead of the seal of Feathrisian League upon it it had been switched out with that of the Gryphus Empire. Clawsirae gathered the correspondence from the desk drawer, "... sister. We need to discuss your marriage prospects. I hope nothing as petty as love will stand in the way of marriage. Our family can ill afford to lose influence in the Empire."

Lucrawsia rolled her eyes, "Of course not brother. Father thought me an ignorant girl, I had hoped you had thought better of me."

"Good." He said as he began looking over the proposals. "Any preferences?"

"Lady in Waiting for the Empress?" Lucrawsia asked impishly.

"Take this seriously you know the Empress doesn't have any spots open. Aquillan Noble?"

Lucrawsia mock gagged, "Squalor of War, everything in ruins? No. Also those dukes are old, idiots or children."

That was two marriage proposals out of the way, Aquilla would be the political doldrums for years. "South Griffonia?"

"Too cold." Of course, Clawsirae thought, his sister would decide her marriage based on Weather.

"Well where would you prefer to be married."

"Griffonstone" she replied a bit too quickly.

Ah so that was where her mysterious lover was. "I see. There is one proposal from the Duke of Griffonstone...

Lucrawsia clicked her tongue, "Why must I marry? Can't you just lead a mercenary company to get influence?"

Clawsirae massaged his beak, and held up the amulet around his neck, "A Duke cannot be in charge of a mercenary company, Sister. It is why the Feathrisian League persisted for so long. The only way I could possibly gain influence with my skills in war would be as a commissioned officer by the Emperor in the Imperial Army." He leaned back in his ducal throne, "A unified Griffon nation means that my particular set of skills, with Leobyrdo's siege weapons are remarkably useless. It is why as soon as the Emperor announces plans for a Palace in Ancient Griffonstone why I will have Leobyrdo be the architect, if he and his rival artists can stop using their teenage tortoises to fight, and he will submit a suitably grand design to revitalize the city for the Empire"

Lucrawsia was about to respond when a shadowy figure stepped out from the shadows. Clawsirae sighed, "Niclawio, still hiding in the shadows? Any opportunities?"

The griffon decked in a black tunic nodded, "Of course my duke, a possibly very useful opportunity for you and your family." He said stepping forward with a letter in his claw. "News from beyond the Peregrines. A foe marches on the Gryphus Empire. War is inevitable"

Clawsirae was shocked, "Really? Are you certain?"

Niclawio merely nodded, "Yes my duke."

Clawsirae fell back into his ducal throne, " This... is... MARVELOUS NEWS. Prepare the soldiers, and some of Leobyrdo's prototypes. I must make my way to Gryphus peak and be the first to offer my sword in fighting this warlord to the Emperor."

His sister clapped her claws together, soon Clawsirae Birdja, Duke of Guaneto, Son of Rodbirdo, graduate of the College of Cardinals would fight a war and get the respect and influence one deserves as a General of the Empire, like the General Beliclawrus before Discord during the First Gryphus Empire. Soon all of the Empire would know the name Birdja once again

We have no intention of going into his Empire after this battle if we win. That's a big if as well this isn't going to be one battle. this battle will be about trying to kill as much of his army as possible and holding them back for as long as possible. We will then retreat and do it over again. unless we're all extremely well he's going to be a few years of war. after which it will be a low while we both build up for the next round. Sombra has more than enough left in the Empire we have millions of people in our Empire and he can pull even more because he doesn't need to worry about morale as much. We can only expand our army so much because we have to deal with our people being angry about that.

maybe we'll get lucky and he'll be hit by a random cannonball. We can hope!

But yeah, it would take both a lot of luck and him being arrogant/overconfident enough to actually put himself in a vulnerable position.

going into his empire RIGHT NOW would be suicide.

First, our artillery would slow us down quite a bit, and we still have too little of it.
Second, The advantage goes NEARLY ALWAYS to the defenders. And closer to the crystal empire he might very well be even stronger.
Third, we don't know the territory. He does.
Fourth, we still don't have a way to reliably kill him other than "more dakka". And while i DO like "more dakka", the fact he can turn to smoke makes it less effective than normal.

We don't know exactly how many people his "empire" has. This could be nearly all of them, or just a small part. If we win we'll need to send more spies to check.

The smart thing to do if we win is to build more fortification, and then take all the actions that improve our logistic and supply chain. So the "more steel" actions, the "more food" actions, and the "more and better equipped soldiers" actions.

Also contact the (probably) Qilin and try to get a hero unit or two to face Sombra if possible. If we're lucky their code of honor will force them to help us

4. Honor before Reason: While codes of honor bind the Qilin people together, they can at times be restricting, preventing them from taking a more practical or less costly option.

Let us wait for the battle to see situation at hands before calling suicide, or marching in mindlessly.

Add to that that we will ultimately have to make counter attack or he will simply continue to rebuild and attack until we colapse, so attack must be an option, and it must be done at the time before he rebuilds as well, or sees that we aren't so easy to conquer and start making a defenses.

But all in all we should wait results and see the situation before making a decisions without knowing a situation we are dealing with.

Can I just say how usefull a machine gun would be right now. Gods if we had machines guns numbers would mean nothing to us anymore. I want my machines guns.

In all seriousness, Sombra just deciding to give up on fighting us and going dormant for a decade would be... not that bad.
Considering our technological (and also economical) progress, and the fact that we still have magical tech tree to unlock, we would be more capable of handling this abomination.
Of course, it would be harder to gather allies that time, as we got lucky with Yaks (though we'll have contacts with the East, so...).

Oh, and a few succesful scouting expeditions, building proper fortifications, maybe studying crystal samples from his empire for some specific weaknesses? Maybe also a "Lessons learned: Sombra and the Crystal Empire" to codify what we know of his tactics and capabilities (and how to counter them)...

Honestly, just driving him into rebuilding would give us an edge, all things considered.

You know Sombra's mind control is a lot more dangerous then we might think since his slaves don't feel pain or any free will of there own they will be doing shit likes this withought weapons (minus the fact there not humans but you get the comparison)

This is all stuff a normal body is capable of it's just limited by your own brain and pain but with Mind control these ponies are still going to be bloody insane fighters simply because they won't care about pain to kill things.

God dammit I can't get this thing to work well just look up world war Z twelve seconds to infection on YouTube for it if it ain't working for you.

the biggest problem is, even if by some miracle we don't lose a single solder as soon as we go on the attack we loss 15,000 troops in the form of our militia since they are only used in wars of defense when the fighting entires our lands. Otherwise they go home to protect it from the monsters that still roam the land. Plus we don't really know how long the yaks will choose to fight in this war before deciding to head on home which is another 10,000 troops right their and if both of those elements leave that's over half of our army we have right now.

I'm not saying we should never counter attack just that if we do we're probably going to have to limited to small hit and run raids and even then we still have no idea where we can actually hit him. I mean the only settlement of sombra's we found was his capital and the only way I can even see us trying to get close enough to even attempt to strike at that is to adopt some of the raiding techniques the diamond dogs use to use and just dig a series of tunnels across the crystal empire then pop up anywhere and lunch lighting raids and then hide back down beneath the earth and collapse the tunnels behind us so sombra can't follow. Our own little ho chi minh trail so to speak. However this is jumping way ahead at this point as we still need to see how this battle goes before we can start even worrying about what comes next.

Well I'm hopeing that after this we can enter some kind of defensive pact with the yaks. Though the fact that they will probably still be divided makes it hard.

Well not really as he doesn't need to worry about things as economy and happiness of his subjects so he could rebuild pretty quickly, i mean he can make his slaves work 24 hours, basically he has ability to rebuild far quicker than us and attack again.

Remember that episode about Equestria, he was able to keep the war going non stop and all that with him and his entire empire being sealed for 1000 years.
So don't expect much time for us to rebuild, we will have to pour all of our resurces into the war until we win.

Fair point. A decade is far too much to hope for, then.
Even so, new bodies to throw to the grinder still need time to be born and grow up, regardless of their lack of will.

+15 for the historical/assassin's creed references!

Fair point. A decade is far too much to hope for, then.
Even so, new bodies to throw to the grinder still need time to be born and grow up, regardless of their lack of will.

Well he did manage to throw vawe after vawe of soldiers on Equestria even with equestria being peaceful 1000 years and probably having larger population than his empire (probably larger population than us as well) and was technologically more advanced than us , all the while he was sealed for 1000 years and had a population similar to what it has now.

But all in all we should wait results and see the situation before making a decisions without knowing a situation we are dealing with.
i might have exagerated a bit by calling it "suicide", but with the advantage defenders have i expect he'll lose more than us in any attack we are prepared against, and fighting only where you have the advantage is just common sense.

Basically i don't think counter-attacking is a good idea unless

1) we get a COMPLETE victory in our first battle
2)we get more info on what we can expect once we reach his land.

Also he doesn't really have unlimited resources either. He can only have so much "umbrum essence" for his creations/monsters, and for every soldier he looses it would take years for him to have new ones grow up (even in the extreme case of "breeding camps from which to get more mind controlled slaves").

And while he might create new weapons or spell he's just one being with no allies (with at most a few advisors. I don't think slaves would make good researchers)

We on the other hand can develope new weapons and techs, find new allies and share whatever advantages we have between all of our allies.

we already discussed "yaks+cannons" before, for example. Once we up our steel production we could probably make some of them basically small tanks.

Well not really as he doesn't need to worry about things as economy and happiness of his subjects so he could rebuild pretty quickly, i mean he can make his slaves work 24 hours, basically he has ability to rebuild far quicker than us and attack again.

Remember that episode about Equestria, he was able to keep the war going non stop.
he can probably rebuild faster than us, but he can't improve as fast (not beyond raw numbers at least, and even that would take years even if he sent child soldiers). I think we have the advantage long term, especially if the winter goes away with him after we win.

And while on the defense he'll probably suffer more losses than us anyway.

And it still depends on how many ponies/slaves he has at his disposal beyond this army.

About Equestria, to be fair we don't even know how many ponies there ARE in Equestria, and how many good soldiers they have. and if the timeline is the same as canon that war had been going on for at most 2 or 3 years.

...also Equestria has never been shown as having a good army, and a couple of years is not enough to go from "peacefull utopia" to "army of veterans". There is a reason if the royal guards are usually considered a joke :p
