Honestly, I only discovered it like a week back, and it's totally my jam right now, so...yea, a little bit.

As much as I like the song, given its origin it would probably make more sense to keep it in our pockets until after we've been conquered and enslaved. Seeing as how its about an underground resistance movement and all.

Here is a solo for Gabriella to sing when the battle begins.

while i REALLY like it (i think i listened to it about 10 times in a row) it sounds a bit too personal for Gabriella right now.

Maybe if Sombra actually kills someone she cares for, like her husband, her son or one of her more trusted knights/guards. Or after a few years of war.

By the way i checked this group (though i already knew "cost of the crown" from a pmv about Celestia) And I'll raise you with this for Sombra!

After all he betrayed the Umbrums, the Crystal ponies, princess Amore and (probably) Radiant Hope as well

@Questor ...I had to.

Heart-Song of War

It is a known, if somewhat rare magical phenomenon for a person, group, or people to spontaneously inspire and create musicals. More common in magical races and far more likely in times of joy and plenty, one would not expect one of these "heart-songs" to appear with an invasion via Dark Lord and his evil army to inspire within a magically null race. Yet in the latter stages of preparations a tune did start. Perhaps it was the sense of national unity King Garrick had inspired, perhaps it was the entirety of the population joining together for a common cause, perhaps it was just something in the spirit of the people waking up. Whatever it was, as the hour of truth grew closer, the people started humming, and then singing a new song while they worked.

Cold: the air and water flowing.
*Clang-clang* go the hammers as the blacksmiths shape and sculpt metal under them. They need more blades, more arrows and spears, more armor. The forges are run night and day to meet quota.

Hard: the land we call our home.
The farmers build the hotboxes in mass numbers, tilling earth and building structures. Local stones are dragged into place and packed with hard earth to make a few more when base matirials run dry.

Push to keep the dark from coming,
Skilled sergeants press the Militia to try and bring their skill up just a little bit higher. They don't have long, but the formation exercises help a little bit. Every bit is needed.

Feel the weight of what we owe.
Diamond Dog squads join up with the main force, fresh plate and spears glinting in the sunlight as they set to defend the pack.

This: the song of sons and daughters,
A miners town gather at the edge of town, the young and elderly waving to their departing kinsman as they marched to war.

Hide the heart of who we are.
A line of gryphons stick sharpened log points into the ground facing outward, creating a frontline. Such a thing would have limited use against flying foes, but lucky for them most of their foes were not.

Making peace to build our future,
A squad of military guards nod respectfully to the procession of Yak troops marching up to the border. The gesture is returned by the procession's leader.

Strong, united, working 'till we fall.
Two dogs pull one of the newly forged cannons onto the line, while a nearby gryphon checks a ballista's frame and adjusting the firing mechanism.

Cold: the air and water flowing.
There is an audible *clunk* as the chest filled with gold coins is set before the next mercenary squad, and they give a bloodthirsty grin.

Hard: the land we call our home.
Sparks fly from the sharpening stones as blade after blade is honed upon it. A line of fighters wait their turn nearby.

Push to keep the dark from coming,
A scout flies high in the air, sharp hawk eyes fixed on the frozen horizon. If the enemy came, they would know.

Feel the weight of what we owe.
The proud Knightly Orders march in formation to the front, their skill and discipline clear to see. Others are inspired by the sight, and drills go smoothly that day.

This: the song of sons and daughters,
A royal family, father, mother, son, and daughter, all embrace each other one last time before the parents take wing to the front alongside their honor guard.

Hide the heart of who we are.
Gryphon and Diamond Dog strap on their armor, metal with softer inner lining to keep the cold out. They then set to join the many others gathering in camp.

Making peace to build our future,
A king and his commanders sit in a tent, working out their plans for battle, and how the three races will fight alongside each other.

Strong, united, working 'till we fall.
Three races, two people's, stand side-by-side, forming ranks. Today, they are brothers.

And we all lift, and we're all adrift together, together.
Garrick Golden-Feather stands atop a raised rock, elevating him just above the vast army around him, looking to the horizon where the foe will attack from. It was a scene that would be made into painting years later.

Through the cold mist, 'till we're lifeless together, together.
Upon the distant line of horizon, even with the cold snowstorm bearing down, a far darker cloud was just visible...yet still, the sun shone.

+15 to a roll! Great descriptions!

Ok, just FYI, mercenary vote has been called for a while now. We hired all of them. They've been added to the Auxiliary section of the State of the Nation post, and their fees have been deducted from the treasury.

Why do people hate Caribou?
What are you people talking about?
They are talking about a very very grimderb/grimdark AU with utterly disgusting plot, premise and execution.

Caribou are the main villains of it.

It's like the Fimfic's version of the Domination of the Draka

that book villain nation that ends up conquering Earth, I just can't remember the name of them - the ones that also biologically altered other ethnicity's to make a slave caste basically, while ballooning our of a small South American nation of their own by being hyper-competent and finally genetically altered ubermench.

Damn, I just can't remember the name of that series.
You get the idea though. You hate the fact that they are winning, that everyone else is an idiot and that their actions are horrifying enough to make Mister WWII Moustachio Brothers themselves go "yo bro, too much".

Omake: Battle Engineers (Semi-Canon)
Omake: Battle Engineers @Questor

They met in the testing grounds, shivering in the first snow.
Max , a bright young recruit from the Ballista Brigade. He came with personal recommendations from Marcus Greybill.
Karlia Redwing, the former Research Advisor of King Brochard of Aquileia. After the Battle of Wingbardy she had offered her expertise for leniency, and had been positively surprised at the warm welcome.
and Genevieve Talonuelli, Archimedes personal protege'. Black spots marred her beautiful plumage, and on her brow sat a pair of protective googles. Yet she walked with a confidence she had not possessed before.

Archimedes himself was busy refining the formulas for his flame weapons, going over recipes he had paid through the beak for from the Troll Hunters.

What had brought them here was not idle discussion, or even mere academic curiosity. Each had their own ideas on how to help win the war against the Dark Unicorn of the South.

"The problem with cannons is the recoil." Max said. "A ballista can be loaded and, if need be, fired on the move. With a cannon that would break your bones. Now if we reverse the recoil, and use it for propulsion..." He produced a ballista bolt - at least it seemed like one at first. The shaft was thicker and it had a second set of fletchings near the tip, both made from wood instead of feathers. He spanned it in, lit the fuse at the bottom and launched it at the designated target. In richer times they might have used hay, now they just laid stones in circles on the ground. Mid-air the bolt ignited, and more than doubled its speed. It crashed way behind the original target, at a second circle Max had prepared, and exploded. "Unlike cannons, they are easy to waterproof, and can be prepared in advance. Of course rockets cost a bit more."

"The problem with cannons is the cost." Karlia retorted, "For these 800 Gold Coins I could have gotten 20 catapults built! Or ballistae." she added with a nod to Max. "Indeed I have a better catapult prepared, one that can launch a 90 kilo projectile across 300 meters. At least in theory." she conceded. "This one is a bit smaller, but I know my math." The new catapult, which had a vague resemblance to a steam mining pump, hit indeed accurate on target - albeit Karlia's circle was quite a bit bigger. "It would not have won us the Battle of Wingbardy, but against a foe we know is coming... 90 kilos of Blast Powder, Shrapnel and Shroom Fire!" she cackled with glee.

"You are still an Aquileian at heart." Max ribbed her good-naturedly. "But what are the reload times?" he asked more serious "And how much would these new catapults cost?"

"About 100 Gold Coins apiece, but we save on steel. More armors for the war effort. Plus we can break it back down for firewood if the worst comes to pass. Reload times are a bit worse but I can fix that with more loaders."

"The problem" Genevieve put on her googles and took to the air "is mobility!" She landed on a nearby tower and unstrapped what looked like a miniature cannon. It also only made a miniature bang (at least compared to the deafening barks of full-grown cannons) and dug a surprisingly deep furrow through her target. "A better griffin might be able to shoot in mid-air" she said as she came back, still a bit winded.

"Maybe we can combine these." Max mused "Rocket-assisted javelins?"

"Take too long to train." Genevieve refuted "But if we make a honeycomb...." She sketched something into the snow that looked increasingly like a box of arrows.

"Add a hinge for optimal elevation..." Karlia added to the sketch "We can manage up to 180 degrees!"

They kept talking details all the way back to their workshop and soon built a new prototype.

Name: Garrick Golden-Feather

Age: 39

Titles: Emperor of Gryphus, King of Griffonia, Inheritor of the Imperial House of Gryphus, The Unifier, Great Winged Alpha

Description: At first glance, you seem like a pretty average example of the Griffon race. Head of an eagle, body of a winged lion, standing perhaps a hair taller than most other quadrupedal species. It's not until one looks closer that they see the things that distinguish you from a crowd. An unmistakably masculine build, a strong, prominent beak, feathers and fur that seem to be perpetually well-groomed, and a pair of piercing amber eyes hiding a fierce intelligence. But you're no peacock, only known for your good looks; your talons are razor sharp, and though you are not as strong as your wife, you are still an apex predator, and your musculature reflects that. Your wife's workout regimen has also improved your physique, cords of taut muscle now visible across your body.

Military

Imperial Army
: Professional soldiers, paid and supplied by you. 500 soldier battalions cost 200 gold each to raise or replace. Additionally, Imperial Army soldiers have an upkeep cost of 200 gold per every ten thousand soldiers.

Imperial Army Morale: 65/100 (Above Average)

Imperial Army Numbers: 21,000

-10,000 Warriors: Armed with a sword or hand-axe and shield, these Griffons make up the bulk of your army.

-5000 Polearms: For keeping your enemy at arms length or taking down opponents larger than a Griffon.

-5000 Archers: Griffons with bows and some arrows. Not much else to say.

-1000 Diamond Dogs: Armed with a variety of swords, war axes, and other weapons suitable for close-quarters, Diamond Dogs are masters of subterranean combat, and are well suited to ambush tactics.

-5 Mobile Ballistae: Massively oversized mechanical bows that fire bolts big enough to pierce through tree trunks from vast distances.

-4 Cannons: Firing iron balls through the power of explosive black powder, these metal siege engines are one of the most powerful weapons in your arsenal.

-2 Flame Projectors: A product of Archimedes's "liquid fire", these static contraptions can shoot jets of flaming liquid vast distances, burning all in their path.

Knightly Orders (Self Maintained): In the old Empire, Knightly Orders were typically made up of Griffons of noble birth who joined a fraternal militant organization dedicated to martial excellence, honor, and a number of various edicts of moral strength. These great warriors dedicated themselves to the Emperor and the protection of the common Gryph. Tragically, few of these brave souls survived the reign of Discord. But a new breed of Knights now seeks to serve as your sword and shield, and will rally to your banner whenever you may need them.

The Knights Lion
1 Grandmaster Konrad Hardbeak, "The Kingslayer"
30 Knights of the Inner Circle
200 Imperial Knights
300 Squires
600 Griffons-at-Arms
Citadel: The Lion's Den, Griffonia

The Knights Talon
1 Grandmaster Colombroni Pigeonio
20 Knights of the Inner Circle
200 Imperial Knights
300 Squires
600 Griffons-at-Arms
Citadel: The Crow's Nest, Wingbardy

The Knights Panther
1 Grandmaster Adrian Dawnquill
20 Knights of the Inner Circle
200 Imperial Knights
300 Squires
600 Griffons-at-Arms
Citadel: The Black Fortress, Aquileia

Royal Navy: The vessels that guard your coastlines and patrol the oceans. Crewed by career sailors, they have an upkeep of five gold per ship, per year.

20 Cogs (Bolt-Throwers)

Auxiliaries: Auxiliary units are forces not part of a Knightly Order or the Royal Army and Navy that can be brought into battle alongside both of the former groups. They can be made up of allied nation units suborned to you, units drawn up from the militia, and mercenary outfits.

-15,000 Imperial Militia: Armed with a cobbled together assortment of spears, swords, axes and bows, the Gryphon militia aren't as disciplined, experienced, or well-armored as the professional soldiers typically entrusted to protect them. But when push comes to shove, they'll fight with everything they have to defend their homes.

-10,000 Yak Chargers: Massive quadrupeds from the Western Steepes, a single Yak is strong enough to wrestle a bear or grind rocks into gravel beneath their hooves. When hundreds of Yaks gather together and charge a foe, they become the living imbodiment of the phrase "unstoppable force".

-The War Wolves: A recently founded mercenary outfit that's attracted a lot of attention for being composed entirely of Diamond Dogs. They've built a reputation for reliability and tenacity, using their natural aptitude for digging to build pit traps and collapse the dens of monsters. They're no slouches in straight combat either, and seem to have perfected the art of rapid fortification. (Numbers: 500 Diamond Dogs)

-The Wood Stalkers: Experienced Archers/Scouts that specialize in Forest Combat, they have years of experience hunting Timberwolves and Feral Diamond Dogs throughout Griffonia. (Numbers: 200 Warriors, 300 Archers)

-The Black Pikes: A unit of heavily armored and stoic Gryphons skilled in the use of long thrusting spears, ground combat, and phalanx warfare. They're not very mobile or good in an aerial battle, but when defending a spot on the ground they're nearly impossible to dislodge. (Numbers: 500 Pikes)

-The Crimson Company: One of the most (in)famous mercenary companies of the Northern Mountains, the warriors of the Crimson Company fly into battle with nothing but steel claws and a coating of war-paint. Almost suicidally brave and determined to win glory in battle or die trying, their lack of armour gives them a significant speed advantage over most opponents. (Numbers: 500 Gryphon Berserkers)

-The Troll-busters: These eccentric exiles of Feathersian nobility are unusual even by mercenary standards. Wielding strange and unwieldy mechanical contraptions that spew streamers of fire like draconic maws, they've made a name for themselves burning down swathes of monster infested forest for the highest bidder. Despite their pitiful numbers, they charge absurdly high rates for their services; apparently those "flamethrowers" aren't cheap to operate or maintain. Still, they would doubtlessly be a valuable asset in battle. (Numbers: 4 Static Flamethrowers)

Politics

Nobility Opinion: 8/10 (Long Live the Emperor).

General Public Opinion: 8/10 (Long Live the Emperor).

Diplomatic Relations

Persons of Interest

???: A friendly and strangely casual Griffon female you met at your inaugural ball. Despite having a wonderful evening chatting with her, you never got her name.

Garibaldi Talonuelli: Formerly the Duke of Wingbardy, now the Archduke of Wingbardy, Talonuelli is a beloved public figure in his home province and an experienced administrator. After saving his city and people from Brochard's attempted invasion and negotiating his province's vassalage over a few drinks, you'd like to think you can count him among your friends.

Federico Montefeathertro: Duke of the (former) City-State of Urbirdo, and your Father-in Law. He might just be the friendliest of the former Feathersians, having agreed to back you and your kingdom without question or condition during the Brochard Crisis, and hiring a mercenary outfit as a belated wedding gift. You're reasonably certain he likes you, as much as In-Laws can like each other anyway.

[ ] Captain Kingfisher's Marvelous Mutineers: Before Brochard started constructing actual warships, he forcibly confiscated several fishing boats from coastal settlements to serve as makeshift patrol vessels. Naturally this didn't fly with many of the local fisher-gryphs. One former boat captain by the name of Gerard Kingfisher led several of his fellows in a daring raid to steal back his boat, along with a shipment of weapons. Branded outlaws, they now make a living as privateers and pirate-hunters, offering a special discount to anyone asking them to raid Aquileian naval vessels. (Numbers: 2 Caravels loaded with 300 angry sailors) Cost: 600 Gold

It would have actually been pretty funny if we could have hired them as well. They're the only mercenaries we never hired.

I can just imagine their ship sailing across the mountains :p

And now i'm wondering if hiring the flamethrower users at wingbardy would have given us a bonus to our own incendiary weapons

Required: 40. Rolled: 84+18=102 Art. Crit!
...not that we really needed it of course
