Again, we have a character that's near giving into something bad, a character that OoC we think might be for chaos (and is doing a great job of hiding it from Mathilde by pointing out the first one as dangerous), and our transportation for food is easy to permanently damage. Yeah, this is a time to head back, as the circumstances have changed. Our best chance at surviving is hoping that Karak Dum is a bloodbath on our cavalry. That's the situation we are in.

Going to Dum was always a fools errand. This changes little.
 
Losing the engineers is bad, but an awful lot of mechanical inefficiency and wear damage can be solved with Enchant Item. It just makes things work better, no justification needed.

And Borek is exactly the kind of desperate that will authorize us to enchant dwarven engineering, despite how radical that is.

I don't have any attachment to Gotrek either, but I felt this update as a gut-punch from the sheer "aw shit" factor. It really screws with our logistics, and feels quite bad coming after a set of triumphs.

The food situation has a chance of improving if we spend a few weeks traveling to Dum and back. The chances our steam wagons face get significantly worse. Without them, there is no food situation to improve.

From Mathilde's point of view, why would she feel particularly overly emotional about Gotrek? She only knew him a little bit and has commanded actions that have resulted in far more dwarves dying than just fell here. Even in the narrative her concern was clearly mainly on the practicalities of the maintenance expertise he represented.

The loss of the mothership you probably should be worried about, but it's difficult to feel strong emotion about logistics so that also makes sense. If it comes down to the Winter Wolves killing starved dwarves for trying to eat their steeds it'll be more visceral. But for now it's just one more future concern among a myriad.

This is bad, and we're now far more vulnerable than we were before, but we've been conscientious about limiting our risks thus far and it feels to me like we have a lot of options yet remaining. Enough to succeed, even if it will be harder.

True, but not losing the wagons has proven harder than it sounds, and it pays to keep in mind we're feeding these people for a reason. Attrition improves our food situation, but it the makes our security situation worse– in the middle of Chaos Wastes. And once we leave, it's a long way back, and we might well be pursued on the return journey, or we might have refugees with us, or– well, who knows, but lots of attrition at Dum isn't going to be a good thing. Still,

It's a nasty loss, but it may be salvageable. I think it strongly depends on the Dolgan right now. If they have several weeks of food, and they're willing to trade on the way back, we can probably make it home without worrying too much about keeping fed.
 
I do feel like people are over stretching the Food issues.

or to be precise looking it weirdly.

we have 2-weeks food.

the way home is 3-weeks in a bone-desert.

we are going to be on short food going back anyways.

but, if we give it enough time.

7 and final combe might have enough Skaven or dwarfs to raid.

and dwarf vagas might get a new supply of food.

logically going forward here is smarter than going back.

I don't think the risk of starvation is all that great whichever way we go... but, importantly, the risk if we head back is not especially increased if we go to Dum first. This is, of course, assuming we don't lose more wagons than knights in proportion going forward - with every wagon lost our food situation is going to become more precarious. Still, normally the wagons are pretty durable.

And, more importantly, our fighting capacity is basically undiminished, which means we should be still be about as good as we were ever going to be. After losing the Slayers, that is.

I am not sure if you mean that in the sense that the expedition members are obviously not complete idiots, or in the sense that remembering to breathe is going to be a real challenge when the other wagons try to pass the corner.
 
Gotrek may be dead, but just as likely, this is divine meddling to get him the axe:

Gotrek gained this weapon during his first expedition to Karag Dum, finding it in a cave near the edge of the Chaos Wastes, near a dwarf corpse, later revealed to be the son of King Thangrim Firebeard, Morekai.
 
@BoneyM It's been confirmed that Rite of Way can't help here, because the mechanism it uses for detecting "need to put a Skywalk here" doesn't work in this scenario. What's the likelihood that we (as in, the Expedition's Wizards) could help with navigating the narrower road by casting Skywalk "manually" as it were? I'm not sure who knows the spell out of everybody, but based on the update it seems like at least the Light Choir know it, and we did just get an illustration of how good they are at coordinating their casting.
