Rite of Way's true game changing potential is in the fact that it's meta magic, magic casting magic. From the spell list its the first meta magic spell the empire has. It opens the door to a lot of interesting research and questions for the wizards of the Empire.
If that really is true—it seems so, but we don't actually know much about how the other College's spells work exactly—we should totally coin that term. Because it probably doesn't exist yet.

We already have enchantments which are magical constructs embedded into objects that cast magic spells, RoW may simply be the same thing except skipping the embedded into an object part.

Maybe? Looking back over the post where this idea was first proposed, it really seems like something very few people would ever think of. First is, of course, the comparison to Necromancy—and as I understand it, even the whole Shyish Tongs thing isn't we'll known?—and Mathilde having to outright ask herself if a Wind can even manipulate itself. Then there's this:
Most spells try to remain as self-contained as possible to remain under the caster's control and so that outside forces and influences can't get involved, but this would require the creation of spells at a considerable distance
That suggests a general aversion to stuff like meta magic due to the necessary distance in spell casting.

On a completely different note:
"This is beginning to sound like something that songs will be sung about," he says with a grin. "And I'm of the opinion that there ought to be a verse or two in glory of Ulric in those songs. The Winter Wolves will ride with this Expedition."
Heh. Heh heh. Poor Wulfhart had no idea.

Also, donating the Acorn to the colleges could allow for huge advancements in magic. Not that we will, as we are going to give it to our girlfriend.

All we know is that it's a huge amount of Ghyran in a tiny volume. That may be all there is to it, the Colleges may already know how to create such a thing but don't because do it there's no purpose to shoving Battle Magic+ levels of magic into something unless you're actually going to use all that magic to do something. It may turn out to be the same as the Shyish swords from Stirland where it'll only be useful as an energy battery. Or maybe not. Point is we don't know and the quickest way to know is to go back to K8P and give it to our resident Ghyran expert, Panoramia, and form our plan of action there based on what we learn.

I mean, almost every piece of magic stuff we've found we've either looked at personally or had one of the K8P wizards look at. Sending magic stuff to the colleges without someone at minimum asking us to do so has been pretty rare so far.

Doubt we're gonna send the arm to the colleges either. Probably have a copy made of the Lustria notes to send back though.

@BoneyM Were there any form of Oaths involved with officially taking our post as Loremaster of K8P under Belegar?

Yes, though nothing exotic. Just 'swear to serve faithfully and to the best of my ability' sort of thing.

The cult of Sigmar and the Cult of Ulric are the state religions of the Empire. Literally, the Cult of Sigmar gets three votes at the elector meets which are used to decide important issues and elect the next emperor. The Cult of Ulric gets one. None of the other religious cults gets a vote. To say that they aren't the state religion is utterly wrong.

No, the state religion of the Empire is the pantheon of the Elder Gods (Ulric, Manaan, Taal, and Rhya), the Classical Gods (Morr, Verena, Myrmidia, Shallya, and Ranald), and Sigmar. An argument can be made that the Elder Gods are the more rightful ones and the Classical Gods are foreign but this is a niche position even amongst the clergy of the Elder Gods, and it'd be ludicrous to argue that, say, the Gardens of Morr don't have any official status.

Ladies, Gentlemen, Etc.

I have a proposal: we should invent movable type printing presses. We have the skills (or at least can learn them). We have the resources. We have the dwarf-power. All we require is the AP.

No using historical hindsight on the tech tree.

@BoneyM Whats the differences between a branch college and a research institute?

Most basically, a branch college is a place for Wizards to learn what the Colleges already knows, a research institute is to add new things to what the Colleges know. But that could change depending on what purpose it's bent towards.

@BoneyM

So, I don't know if it's been explored, but what are the reasons for the dwarves demographic decline in the divided-verse.

The way I see it, the low female to male ratio is not really a problem unless lots of dwarves women die. In fact, it means you can have 2 in 3 men die in conflicts or going slayer without affecting your funamentals so long as women have more than 4 kids on average (which they would have to even without constant warfare).

Now I can see many reasons why dwarves demographics aren't doing well regardless but I'm very curious about what it really is in universe. Potential reasons :

1. Dwarves don't remarry once their spouses die,
2. High proportion of female dwarven fighters / slayers,
3. When a hold is lost the whole population dies,
4. General depression in the society making people less eager to procreate thus lowering birthrate,
5. High birth related mortality rate (mother and/or child) due to lost knowledge somehow.

Wonder if anyone has thoughts on the subject...

The Dwarves are extremely private about such matters, so there's no available in-universe answer.

@BoneyM, the thought came to me today, and I became curious- the different Orders like to use different terminology for their positions, right? And the word rector basically just refers to an administrator.

So... did the Ducklings actually know that Melkoth is the "Commander of the Grey College's Battle Wizards", vs. thinking that he's a pencil pusher?

College org charts are standardized. Most Colleges have fancy titles but they still know the underlying structure, so they'd know what Melkoth's rank means.

@BoneyM, will Mathilde be signing her anonymous papers as Lord Magister Grey? It would fit the convention thus far but considering there are only eight Grey Lord Magisters it feels like that would make it significantly easier to identify her as the author.

Depends how anonymous they are. Mathilde's published some things as Grey and some things entirely without a byline.

How about a college for Runesmiths with Kragg and Thorek as co-headmasters as the boon. While every Runesmith/Runelord would still create runic items for and go on campaigns with their Karak, they all would have the duty to spend at least some time teaching at the college. This pooling of knowledge would be incredible with each Runelord/Runesmith focused on teaching their particular speciality. Such a system would actually be able to produce students that Kragg would find worthy of teaching his most esoteric knowlege to. Karag Ziflin would be perfect for that: The vaults would be used to store Anvils of Doom and AV, as well as host the Anvil workshop for maintenance and AV-recharging. Furthermore there would he the Runesmith-guildhall where every Rumesmith/Runelord will find lodging and there are establishments that serve food and drinks to them. Because there are so many Runesmiths at one place here, Karag Ziflin would have the largest temple of Thungi in the entire Karaz Ankor and a massive communal workshop as well as seperate adjacent workshops for Runesmiths that value privacy. In the workshop area there would be places set aside specifically for rediscovering the mysteries of Golden Age runelore and the creation of new runes. While a single individual, even one as exceptional as Kragg, is likely doomed to never solve a mystery like Bok, a group of Runesmith-researchers each with their unique perspective and skills will have an excellent chance. Finally there would be the library of runelore with a reading room offering stunning views of the area. Every book the Karaz Ankor has on runes would be available here and every Runesmith/Runelord would be encouraged to add to it.

Knowledge being lost when there's nobody worthy of learning it is the system working as intended, not an odd little bug they've never got around to fixing.

I kinda doubt that the colleges can make things like it. Even looking at powerstones didn't have this much brightness.

Well, if there aren't enough dwarves still alive to hold the lost holds, there's an obvious solution to that.

... Use humans and halflings like Belegar did.
I mean, if it works it works. As I recall it's been mentioned a few times that the Empire would quite like more land to settle and spread out their population. Of course, this isn't quite the same thing...

It doesn't take extra effort. We already have a breeding population in K8P. Don't know how dwarfs feel about being a minority in there own empire.

A Matter of Perspective
A Matter of Perspective

Mathilde's perspective (from Turn 33 - 2486 - Part 2):

Your return to the matter of the Waaaghsoak Mushrooms is a perfect opportunity to show off your Green Tower to Panoramia, who nods along as you explain the different components of it but is obviously itching to be unleashed upon the planters you set up, which occupies her for the next several days. It's certainly pleasant to have her nearby while you work on other things, but once she considers herself satisfied with the conditions that your fruit-bearing saplings are growing in (which are now significantly larger and noticeably lusher) it's time to return to the matter at hand.

Panoramia's perspective:

She woke to the sounds of a brush running through hair. She stretched, feeling soft sheets and and fluffy pillows as she thrust her fists above her head and arched her back, then with a sigh relaxed and opened her eyes.

Mathilde sat on the edge of the bed half-facing away, meditatively running a tortoise shell comb slowly through her long brown locks. Her eyes were mostly closed, only a single thin layer of cloth hung over her- a grey shift, half-off her narrow muscular shoulders, while a soft half-smile played across her lips.

Panoramia licked her own lips, tasting salt and hot memories from the night before, but in the early grey light did no more than watch. Five strokes, ten, fifty, then switch to the other side. Five, ten, fifty. Mathilde bowed her head. Panoramia felt power flex- a soft cool wash across her skin and a floating feel under her fingernails- then relax. Mathilde looked up, met her gaze, and smiled

"Good morning. Would you like to do some research with me today?"

(Flashback)

The days before had been glorious; Mathilde's architectural ambitions had cooled but not vanished since her days of magical superweapons. Instead of a looming tower of grey threatening dwarven hellfire, or a crackling tower of blue threatening bolts of lightning, the latest was a wonderfully welcoming font of upwelling jade that had slowly taken shape at the far edges of her awareness. And three days ago, Mathilde had come with an infectious grin and an invitation to tour it.

She had been to the grey's penthouse before (Mathilde secretly delighted in showing off her slowly expanding mountaintop palace) but this was special: this time it was evident that all through the planning and construction of this latest piece, Mathilde had been thinking of her. There was no real need for a Jade tower, not for a grey wizard- unlike the blue or the red towers it did not add to or defend the Eye of Gazul, and was not of personal use in research. So while it's construction may simply have been a Wizard doing wizard things to the vast majority of the Karak, to Panoramia it was a message both subtle and blindingly obvious in a way only the greys could really manage. Mathilde was making a space for the Jade wizard in her life. Panoramia approved. It was true that every wizard dreamed of having a tower, even if only a little...

The outside was nothing too special, though it took living in the Karak and the tower's neighbors to make that statement true. Dwarf-crafted blocks of carefully stained limestone shot through with dozens and dozens of small windows made up the outside, two stories tall above the foundations and with a gorgeous vine-carved staircase spiraling up the exterior. A door of weathered copper leaves opened onto a landing at the top of the stairs, the door split horizontally in two halves to allow for some additional control over the ventilaton.

This was the way Mathilde took Panoramia, bouncing up the stairs with her endless energy and chattering about the difficulties the artisans had experienced trying to form patterns friendly to ghyran. Apparently the dwarven love of geometries and stylized repetition did not mesh well with growth and nature, but after some examination of jade college glyphs and experimentation it was discovered that branching fractals were a workable middle ground.

Panoramia caught her by the hand just as the breathless words finished tumbling from her mouth, pulling her to a stop at the top of the stairs.

"This is all... You made this all for me? It's almost too much!"

"Well, not *just* for you! I'm looking forward to wandering over and picking fruit off the bush for my breakfast. But... Yes, I was hoping you would help me with it. There's a few bits of research I think it might be useful for too!"

"Mathilde..." Normally, with others present, Panoramia's tone might have been chiding, or mildly exasperated. Here and now, it was low, earnest. "Mathilde, I would like very much to kiss you right now."

Mathilde's eyes widened, and she ceased to tug Pan towards the door as her free hand rose to cover her mouth.

"Oh! I'm- I didn't- it's- wh-wha- umm. Ok?"

Panoramia stepped forwards into her space, reaching out to cup her cheeks and tilt her hat back, looking very seriously into her eyes.

"Thank you." She said, and leaned forward just enough to press her lips against Mathilde's. A moment passed.

"Now show me the inside! It looked like you have a couple of levels?"

"Ohhhh.... Oh! Yes!"

Inside was a single large open space, with ferns and flowers lining the ramp spiraling down the interior, and tubs of individual fruit trees crowded again the walls. Several large empty planters seperated by low stone walls occupied the center. It was all so new, and Panoramia could feel the jagged edges and catches of not-quite smoothness in the flow of ghyran against her skin.

She turned again to Mathilde and this time without asking gave her a longer, deeper kiss, pressing her whole body against the other woman's.

"Thank you. And it looks like you were right that I might be able to help you- there's a bit of work to be done to make sure all those trees grow well enough to give you fruit. But it's a long walk back to my cottage tonight, so I should probably begin back and see you in the morning-"

"Stay with me."

"I'm sorry?"

Blushing furiously, trying desperately to hold contact and pretend that this is all perfectly normal, Mathilde continued.

"I've got a very nice bed, and one of the best bathes on the continent outside Wurtbad. Stay with me? You wouldn't have to walk up and down all those stairs each day."

Panoramia responded with a delighted smile and another, even longer kiss.

"Research? Of what sort?" Panoramia asked, pushing herself up.

"The waaaghsoak mushrooms. I thought they might make a good aide for journeymen, and we haven't had a chance to follow up on that last paper in a while."

"Mhhhmmmm. Sounds good. But we should start with breakfast and a good talk about how we are going to go about this. Here, let me help?"

Panoramia moved up behind Mathilde as she obligingly turned away, taking the brush with brief touch of fingers and seperating Mathilde's long hair into two bunches. With a bit of whimsy, Panoramia began plaiting her hair, weaving the brown stands into an echo of the dwarf-styles as the two talked softly of mushrooms.

A/N: Fluff! Mathilde-plaits getting mentioned plus running across the Green tower getting shown off for the first time gets you this!

yes, this pleases me!

I thought Mathilde's hair was black? Of course, as we just recently had proof of Boney doesn't really define stuff like that usually, but I could have sworn Mathilde at least was specific. Am I remembering wrong?

Aaand this is why the Karaz Ankor has spent the last three thousand years relying decreasingly on runesmiths and increasingly on engineers (who aren't so bloody-minded about this, or at least are numerous enough that you rarely have critical tech being lost because "no one was worthy")... and, now, on an umgi secretly a dawi in disguise wizard. :p

Is Hochland College of Sorcery a branch college within quest canon? And are there any other such branch colleges at the moment?

I mean, we've had Battlemagic-in-a-seed-size-container sitting within our palm for almost a decade. Seeds can be of wildly different sizes, but presumably(?, to attract our attention so) this new one is a density surpassing even our Seed of Regrowth.

Yes, Hochland is an all-College branch. A few others are the Ancient Library of the Lights in Tubingen, the Wizards and Alchemists Guild of the Golds in Middenheim, and the Royal Academy of Talabecland for the Jades and Ambers in Talabheim.

Mattie is a Grey Wizard who cast's illusions to change her appearance on a regular basis for long periods of time, alternates spending long periods of time outside in the sun with long periods of time inside and underground (sunlight can lighten hair colors), and regularly has massive amounts of energy that have the capability of changing the human form flood her body (divine energy all the time in various ways, the seed, our armour, proximity to AV, our magic tower rooms, have we eaten a Waaaghsoak mushroom at one?, etc, etc.)

I could genuinely buy Mattie not being sure what her regular, default hair color is at this point. I could also buy it changing, adding yet another "what is going on with that woman" factor.
