Are there othertopics that would be useful for us to pick up, either to assist the expedition itself or to assist our preparation?
Logistics +1 - Skaven
Tactics +1 - Skaven
This irritates me. Let's add some dwarven and/or imperial books to that, and perhaps strategy.
It might help Mathilde better understand the typical logistical problems with expeditions and give bonus to planning rolls she makes.

I do ponder if dear Cython is completely unfamiliar with ascended gods. It would explain why he's so confused about their lack of balanced portfolio.

And so....

CYTHON: You have books about dragons as well?

MATHILDE: Yes, a few.

CYTHON: Loan them to me; I expect this will be quite amusing.

And so....

CYTHON: One of these books was quite different from the others. Rather than an academic text, it appears to be an entertainment. The memoirs of the dragon Deathfang, as narrated by his... 'manager', if I understand correctly? Quite entertaining the way it's kept so much in the manager's perspective, so we only see Deathfang like the moon in a reflecting pool.

MATHILDE: Ah, yes....

CYTHON: Still, I had never thought of such a thing. A dragon hiring oneself out to fight for... money? It does seem to have provided him with great entertainment. I must think on this.

MATHILDE: (sweatdrop)

And so....

CYTHON: Shadow, I require a manager!

And so....

ASNARIL: (tightens fist) They do not need us?!

MATHILDE: I'm sorry Asnaril, the Duke decided to go with... well, with the bigger dragon.

CYTHON: (laughs harder)

It nods firmly. "Will visit at dusk, when shadow is in primacy," it says. It then cocks its head, considering you. "A gift for a welcome neighbour," it says as it thrusts a taloned claw into the snow, then in an avalanche of snow it pulls out a massive, frosted-over figure. It takes you a moment to recognize the Orc you only ever saw at a distance: Warboss Birdmuncha.
It's nice to see the general "but what if they're an asshole" line of objections put so firmly to bed. When you come down to it, the dragon took the time to think about when we'd be most comfortable with having a giant unstoppable dragon in our home and decided to come then even though it probably wasn't as convenient for them.

Then clearly the ratties and to an extent, us (as in Mathilda), are nuts for even thinking about taking on this guy!
The rats specifically tried to avoid fighting Cython, and we're only prepping to fight it in the event it turns hostile. I'd give good odds on Cython winning 99 times out of a hundred if it fought the whole of K8P, but even if that one-in-a-hundred chance is incredibly unlikely to come up we still might have to gamble on it.

I wouldn't say it's quite that bad. I'd say we have a good chance of beating him, we would just take an unacceptable number of casualties.

I was the first person pushing for just raw - B o o k - (the search function claims):
Bröthers and Sistörs, I desire... B o o k.
So I'm pretty happy that some variation on - B o o k - is practically invincible at this point, unforeseen circumstances notwithstanding, now that we know that the massive nerd cred it entails will extend to the nearby Emperor Dragon (who will be pleased to have this establishment in what's functionally their neighbor's living room).

I wasn't sure about Dragon, but the shipping goggles are firmly on now folks. He's a book nerd! How many people does mathidle know that are as into books as her? Pretty much no-one.

See, that's why we stole it.
All As Planned.🤞
Admittedly, my plan for dealing with the dragon if we had to fight it during the reclamation could basically be summed up as:
  1. Shove the brass orb down its throat.
  2. Run away very fast.
  3. Pray it works out.

For the record, I have added Warboss Birdmuncha to the list of characters I'd be willing to practice/experiment necromancy on to make sure Mathilde had the basics of preserving mind, nature, memory and the likes down before we tried on someone we actually care significantly about.

Plus, the guy had enough guts to throw himself at a dragon. If we ever need an expendable figurehead/captain of our future undead legions, I can think of worse candidates.

Particularly because he's already dead and therefore in our recruitment pool.

I'm not nearly so hopeful. Dragons below Cython's tier are army killers even without magic.

Also, aside from all the immense power and magic and stuff, did he just learn a new language in one afternoon, or was that something I missread and it took several sessions?

Because the former is really impossibly impressive even for a Dragon.

The King and local priests are gonna be so interested in this.

A dragon that is very keen on the idea of Dwarves AND their gods? That's the kind of thing you can only dream of.

That's what it read like to me too.

So, one thing that I haven't seen any proposed turn plans address is AV. Are we really going to drop the research actions again and let it languish? Because if so, I owe some people apologies for saying AV isn't going to take forever.
Probably we have to let it languish until after the expedition. Afterwards, though, I will definitely gun for doing the divine magic experimentation action ASAP, once we have spare slots for research again.
Yeah, I want to check if it's possible to empower Ranald a tiny bit or temporarily (or his Coin specifically I guess) by dripping bits of AV onto his Coin. It might only be the equivalent of enough power to recharge an Anvil Rune, but... having your god more energetic and caffeinated sounds like it can only be a good thing if you're going up into the Chaos Wastes, after all. Even if it can't power him up the way the theft of Mork's energy did, it might grant tiny bits of power for a miracle or two. Alternatively, it does nothing because AV comes from the Aethyr and, well, as a God Ranald already dwells in the Aethyr to begin with.

Unfortunately, it is indeed possible/probable we might have to put it off for after the expedition. But if we could try any blue-sky research once, I'd go for AV over tongs, definitely yeah.

@Andres110 actually proposed that a few turns ago, but Boney said it wouldn't help because Mathilde is not organizing the logistics of the expedition.

I agree that I'd like to flesh out our library on that eventually.

I think it's likely that dribbling AV on the coin will just generate some "loose" divine energy here in the world. I agree that there's no reason it would meaningfully empower Ranald.
