So, this is touching on a shelved topic, but... regardless of what we used our Transcendental favour on, if it in any way involves "books being copied", we shall have it mandated that ink with metallic filings is used, unless there is a very good reason to not use metallic ink, yes?

Yes.
----
Also, Johan should build himself a familar asap, presumably one that he can see through, or get someone to read/re-write the skraven books for him in metallic ink. No need to be a Wizard or anything, someone trustworty in K8P who has some time and a steady hand.
rusting and corrosion and paper don't mix well.

so no iron or iron alloys or metals that oxides as alkaline... so basically copper...

that might not be practical for every book...

You're coming at this from a physics/chemistry perspective, which is needed in terms of preventing damage to the paper, and Johann has "Magnetoreception: Johann has developed keen magical senses, especially when it comes to metals." Which lets us use other things than iron, being magic is more likely to be coceptual. So, some sort of metal that does not corrode, then. If not every book is viable, then those that he wants most.

Edit: I'm guessing you said copper as that is the cheapest/most abundant IRL?

This is from Warhammer Fantasy Battles 8th Edition. It's one half of a picture depicting a fight between the Empire and an ork army (including giants).
@BoneyM, how much total favour would it cost to make the Tower of Dawn and Dusk capable of flight?
Probably about 30, more than that to do so and also insulate the inside against the Azyr it would take, also more if you want to be able to steer. Also you'd have a hell of a recharge time unless you find a way to gather Azyr beyond ambient absorption.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have passed the first milestone. If I remember correctly, it's 10 favours to do the insulation and then another 10 to steer, so just 12 more favour until we can get our perfect flying tower.

Also paper is still rare and expensive here, it's as likely (or more) to be parchment or vellum.
Don't know enough chemistry for how that affects metallic inks, mind.

oh, @BoneyM I was wondering, does Mathilde have a ballpark idea of the 'favour value' of this Altar she's comissioned?

If any of the towers fly, it needs to be the smoke and mirrors one.

maximise range. :)

edit: actually that is an idea...

three flying towers that work with smoke and mirror.

One in K8P.

One in the corner of Ostland

and one in the other corner of middenland as close to the border as possible.

instant triaged teleport that can be adjusted with changing territory!

@BoneyM, is it possible (puppy dog eyes)

Nah... he should invent a new spell that works like breach the Unknown, except on books. It reveals their content. That way Johann can just punch a book and get the knowledge downloaded inside his brain. Leaves more time to work out, so he can Punch things better.

Whew. Good thing that K8P has "Money = Yes X 3", regarding the favour cost of the Altar.

I hope that for preparation of volunteers for this; that the Amber College will send along reports on the experience from those that have cast this spell and those that have observed them; obviously, there will be a massive difference between that are as attuned to the amber wind to the point of being able to cast this battle magic and non-wizards, but it might be helpful.

The test usage of it will be a bit of a trip to read about of course. I think we should do it away from K8P though, so as to not risk antagonising the Ice Dragon. If I were the amber college, I'd ask to send an observer to the test usage, so as to interview the volunteer.

Provided this never needs to be used against our Ice Dragon neighbour, I wonder if it would like to go on a vacation with us some day. Would be nice to get to know eachother while travelling ;)

I was about to object, but then I realised that the spell should just be designed so that the book is rendered immune to punch-damage for the duratiom :)

If I trusted myself to be able to capture Belegars' voice, the idea of him vaguely worrying about what his eccentric Loremaster might come up with tickles me. Racking his Dawi imagination for the additional strangeness he's likely invited into his strange hold, but yet coming nowhere near the magnitude of the truth.

No individual part is outright impossible, but there's a lot of 'try it and find out' in there.

I wonder if we could make the dragon transformation healthier by asking a runesmith to build something like a decontamination chamber that sucks any residual Ghur out of the volunteer. Possibly followed by an enchanted item of that gold spell that cures mental damage, followed by another trip to decontamination.

Making it a tower rather than an altar might have been more sensible as well.
