Mathilde isn't a raging murderer or some weird disease cultist (how do people even get tempted by doom-Shrek?), and she's pretty well indoctrinated against the temptations of chaotic magic (in a good way), and being proud and liking trashy romance novels aren't evil character traits on their own, but exaggerating those desires to such obscene proportions (more than multiple years worth of the entire income of province-wide institutions!) is pretty much a textbook case of going way too far.

And seriously, what else could a literally esoteric romance novel even be?

I do kinda think the library mechanic is a bit... strange, because when you get right down to it, we haven't got a clue of the limits of what subjects are available, they seem to expand out infinitely.

Got a library on greenskins? what about greenskin history, architecture, cuisine? you have every possibly relevant book? okay, now get all the ones the Tileans/dwarfs/elves/brets have written on the subject, too. Got those? great, now, onto the next item on the list of book subjects we'd quite like. (que comedy endless unscrolling scroll)
 
Not only is the vote tally so arcane it has a miscast chance, but now it also has so many different votes (>100) that a "See more" option is appearing at the bottom.

I have been persuaded to move to one of the smaller options for the library vote after considering how much money it is, and I feel the numbers are a little wonky on sense of scale, but that's perhaps inevitable from abstraction.
 
We already spent what, roughly 5,000 gold crowns on books.
That's a hundred good farms. We could buy our birth village with a fraction.
It's a vast amount of money in-setting.
We bought a 250gc Extensive Esoteric library on entomology for the first threat we came across. Now with the next round of splurging, this really feels to me like we, and thus Mathilde, do not know how to manage her sudden wealth.
I'd not be surprised at a second chat with the Bursar being in our near future.

Either that or a rogue Dwarven financial advisor holding an intervention.

A councillor who has unsustainable spending habits is a massive liability.

Edit: Also, good luck convincing Belebro that we need extra money for a side project in the near future, after all this massive wasting of cash.
 
As a theoritical mastery, for the Shadow Knives spell, how would people feel abou a shadow sword slash?

And a thought, I know it doesn't exist in gameplay, but what about an idea for a Master Rune of Gazul,
If I was to make a sword for Mathilde, well Gazul has a sword, Mathilde hates Undead, concept wise I imagine it as a rune which grants flaming attacks and does nasty things to undead and possibly necromancy itself. However it doesn't necessarily match shadows, or her particular victories

I actually am vaguely accepting of buying some romance books, thing is I view that as personal collection

I've read some literature on RL cults arising during famines. Let's just say that some shit that occurred in real life is disturbingly similar to Nurgle cults - except the literary Nurgle cults look like children playing pretend. I do not understand the mindset it takes to join one of those cults and I dearly hope that I never will.

But yes, Nurgle cults are realistic, if toned down.

It's sort of their fault, though; they've hammered into us that we've absolutely got to liquidate pretty much all our money whenever we get it, so they shouldn't be surprised when that becomes how Mathilde ends up dealing with money.

At least most books are a good investment on being a wizard.
 
Not purchasing books this turn is frankly silly - the GM explicitly said that from now on, it'll be up to us to predict what references Mathilde will need for the next turn.

Mathilde knows she'll almost certainly be asked to help integrate the spiders in a few months. She knows that she's located in a trade hub that will see people come in from all over the world. She has a bookseller that can get her just about any book from the Empire.

Why wouldn't she pick up some texts about teaching and learning languages?

We're spending what would be considered our own money, none of the budget Belegar gives us is going on these books. Also broadly speaking but everything we've bought outside of the romance stuff is liable to be relevant to our future actions over the years.

It's not "silly". All of the concerns about extravagant overspending from someone who has newly acquired enormous wealth are quite valid.

I think it's worth spending a little time investigating other things the money could be spent on, like a truly excellent wizard laboratory, exotic ingredients, and who knows what else. We're rushing into spending huge amounts on books because other options aren't as clear yet.

Why wouldn't she pick up texts on teaching and learning lagnuages? Because she personally has better things to do with her time than teach and learn languages. That's someone else's job.

Hey you remember those 30 pages of arguments about the Ubersword? How it was extravagant? Now apply most of the reasons for, but for an Uber-library.

There, argument over.
-If we buy well now, we'll only need to buy once.
-now is the time when we have access to a best bookseller in Barak Var
-The sooner we get it, the more use we'll get of it.
-Since we can buy the best one now, we should. We'll earn more money later, don't you know?

Ah, but we're not buying well. We're buying like a person not in control of their spending who doesn't know how to manage wealth.
Or judge the relative value of spending on short-term issues (several hundred gold of spiders already) versus recurring ones like the Orcs and Skaven infesting K8P.
