So uh. Does this fulfill the contract of a seemingly magical death?

Someone else was literally sleeping in his bed, and what, the knives literally came out from inside him thanks to the Matrix?
They didn't "come out" as in poked out of his chest cavity, but instead manifested inside it, tearing stuff apart, and dissapearing without leaving a visible mark. It will probably be ruled as natural causes until the autopsy, at which point the examiners will notice that it's as if a knife teleported inside the Tzar's chest cavity and then vanished.

He's a Tzar.. with how.. open minded our world Katrine is as a Tzarina, it would take a lot to for it to be noted in the adventure.
IIRC it was said earlier that the Empire is a lot more liberal about queer/extramarital sex than real-life Europe due to less religious conservatism on that front, but a lot tighter in regards to kinks/weird sex due to Slaanesh. Might apply to Kislev too.

As an aside: while this obviously worked out, there was actually a ~40% chance of at least one die coming up a 1 & giving us a real complication. So in fairness to folks who were advocating greater caution, things could indeed have gotten very plausibly messier.

(would have presumably required further bad luck to really fuck up beyond recovery, of course, but just in terms of the raw likelihood of confounding factors)

Which makes it look like an actually-quite-competent lahmian faking natural causes.

This update definitely brings the thought that, death should not be so calm, clean, or easy.

But no matter what death should be, it was.

(And I don't mean that in a "update quality" way. Just the disturbing aftertaste of being very, very good at a very rotten job.)

RIP Vladimir, you weren't a vampire but that wasn't enough anymore. At least you weren't actually a bear, that would have been an awkward topic to broach with Boris.

There is a reason why everyone is scared of Grey Wizards (remember that minor noble who came to K8P for some trade thing?) over and above any superstitious dread they may have of magic and that is it. This man was for all his lack of magical protections one of the most well defended people in the Old World and Mathilde just killed him on the fly with minimal effort

YES IT WORKED whew, even the 2 more or less played into our hands by making the death even more spookily quiet. Also love the complicated feelings.

For added hilarity, the paramour could have been an extremely confused Lahmian.
Lahmians, who are noted for operating in human societies and probably really dislike the idea of chaos invading, smashing their plans and killing the people they have spent time influencing.

Paramour: "But... I wasn't going to kill him until tomorrow!"

So the Tributary rollout is just the maximum Boris is able to support or something else?
When we first met him, Boris said he would do anything to see more Kislev and less Chaos. This same attitude is what drove him to ask us to commit patricide by proxy, so yes, I imagine it'll be the maximum. Ice Witches and Hag Witches and priests and possibly some Hedgewise from the Forest of Shadows all working to spread tributaries everywhere there are actual waystones in Kislev.

I'll have to go find it, but there was a Boney quote on how, given that Kislev suffered so much from the Great War Against Chaos, that they might start seeing very visible improvements from tributaries - more farmlands, for instance.

As far as I know it's not explicitly spelled out anywhere, but you can read it into canon if you put even a little bit of effort in. Everything about Dazh reads as extremely twink-y, the Bear God loves Him so much that bears sleep at winter because they're sad that He's gone, and His dancing and literally flaming angels, the Arari, don't have a specified gender but are getting boinked on the reg by Tor.

God, Mathilde is just genuinely terrifying here. Even as she doubts why she's doing this, her ability to do so was almost never in question. A Tzar, dead. So easy her mind had time and freedom to wander.

Well, this went disturbingly well.

Even the paramour being there is somewhat to our advantage. It adds to the not so obvious impossible assassination and if they do somehow identify the matrix it will look like they were waiting for him to be alone with an easy scapegoat like her.

The rest is up to Boris now it seems. All he needs to do is take our work and successfully use it to convince people of the intended target's guilt.
