@BoneyM , could we theoretically use a flying mount and cast Burning Shadows using the mount's shadow to burn those far below from a safe distance? Could also work with a gyrocopter.

I'm also concerned about being in charge of an organization of men given our own reluctance to let Sigmar flourish in any capacity in the institutions we control. While there are going to be plenty of Ulricans here, I would find it unfortunate if a cult of Sigmar formed amongst the mercenaries and we felt compelled to quash it.
This is the most convincing argument for playing mayor I have yet seen.

This could be one of the first places filled with Imperials, yet free of Sigmar!
You can't hide your faith from a Grey Wizard, they can read minds you know.

Jokes aside, we did made some progress with spreading Ranald's worship in K8P already, and the crowd is probably receptive to further work in that direction, yes.

Wouldn't actually add much unfortunately. Wizard children don't really need sensors or anything to identify, what you need is someone to see the kid doing freaky things and instead of lynching them, send them to the Colleges.

Magic kids aren't that subtle.
Could offer limited reward just enough that they don't murder the kid and send them to the Colleges instead intervening at the right time and right place. A small amount of money for a poor village would be big enough for them to spare them and send them away.
Just got to spread the news all over the Empire plus its low enough that criminal groups cannot take advantage of it same for villagers if they want to piss off the Colleges.

[X] There's a lot of prime real estate currently unclaimed. Stake out a prime position for a wizard's tower.
[X] Write a series of papers on the magical phenomena you witnessed. Or better yet, get your Journeymanlings to do the actual writing.

I just really dislike the mayor option. I don't care to see Mathilde becoming the ruler of a town, it ties her down, eats time that will be better spent on things that she is actually good at (sneaking and magic), and in general doesn't seem as fun as playing the advisor.

(Also, Mathilde anti-Sigmarite beliefs would rear their heads if she is in charge of the humans)

Why all this talk about a rifle by the way? Those are not subtle. A crossbow seems like a better idea to me for long range takedowns, should also allow for some Runes and magic imbued bolt shenanigans I suspect if we can get Ulgu attuned wood.

Also, doesn't Ulgu have any long range assassination spells?
If you're firing from beyond the range of a well made dwarf handgun a crossbow is shorter ranged and bulkier than the rifle, and not a lot softer, because remember, apply inverse square law for how sound disperses in the open air.

As for long range, Ulgu doesn't have much in the library of great range. Maybe a ritual cast Magic Dart and if you're doing that you should use a rifle instead.

At least, short of Battlemagic or ritual casts.
While I do like the idea of having the penthouse of Karak Nar serving as the base, or the entirety depending on size, of our wizard tower. I'm not sure it it would be the best location. To my best recollection, Karak-Eight-Peaks is situated on a leyline of magic, which, while we don't know for sure if that is true in this story, could provide an excellent spot for a Wizard's tower. Not only would we have streams of magic to use for testing the snake-blood as well as for working on enchantments.
Explicitly, if we took the time to survey for a site, others would have taken dibs on some of the sites.

We could have a survey to identify the best possible site but it might be dibs'ed already, or remote, or requires a structure to be put up from scratch or we can eyeball it based on known qualities and take a known good site, then take a bit of work to extend the leyline to the good site.
What? :???: How is wearing a belt "on their genitals"? Did you misword this or mean something else?
The spell summon a horse made out of solidified shadows. People aren't keen on putting their genitals on that.

I just want to get a fancy dwarf sword, and this seems like the option that will bring Matty into proxinity of Dawi Who Make Swords.

I imagine winds and torrents of magic are usually not constant. She can see what the Ulgu (but not other winds - checking those out needs tools) looks like right now,l. Fnding a place where winds are consistently strong regardless of time of the year, greenskin population and moon phase would take a research.

It'd probably be worth it though?

Getting a good long term wizard residence is important and even if Mathilde eventually moves to Altdorf or something it could be used by apprentices or other wizards of the Grey College. There's no reason to not go for the absolute best spot possible.

An argument in favor of Undumgi:

First, I need to clarify what I see Mathilde as and what aspects of her I want to reinforce: I want Mathilde to be a quintessential grey wizard, with knowledge about events both far and near, able to tip the balance of a critical event all over the world before others even realize there is something that needs to be done, and knowledgeable in matters of arcane in the extreme (basically, Gandalf). In the same time, I really like Belegar and am enthusiastic about k8p being our new home.

Bearing that in mind, let's look at the options: the leading two, which have a very good chance of winning are getting a tower and travelling to Karaz-a-Karak and becoming Belegar's foreign intelligence service. These are conducive for my proposed vision of Mathilde, as they

lock-in k8p as her home
give her an official position in Belegar's court
give her a reason to have an occasional adventure outside of k8p, as stomping thaggaroki and grobi all day every day is bound to get old rather fast.
give her official reason and funding to start building world-wide information network, which in turn would also give access to reasons for adventures in new and interesting locales, without actually leaving k8p

Sure, she might actually do better and be more needed by Belegar as a scout/infiltrator/saboteur/assassin in k8p proper (because she is frankly amazing in that role, and he damn well knows it), but the external spymastering gives us, the players, to a greater variety of things happening, so I am okay with that.

Now, the critical question: undumgi or papers.

Undumgi:

Undumgi have extreme synergy with spymastering externally. Getting establishing them means that we get to establish security over the foreign quarter of k8p (which we need to do as a spymaster), we get immediate access about all the information passing through what is to be a major trade route and have a shoo-in in establishing information network in the nearby Ulrican settlement (again, a necessity).
Undumgi can be leveraged in an increased presence of East Empire Trading Company, as there is world of difference between one of your founders being a dwarf friend living in the hold and one of your founders being in control (for some degree) of the foreign quarter of said hold. This can not only increase EETC revenue and profits but also give us easier time in making EETC a part of our information network, which both helps our general spymastering and lets us keep an eye on Stirland just in case.
Undumgi are likely to be much less sucessful without Mathilde. While they are steadfast and skilled in arms, they are not most organised or law-abiding bunch and are unlikely to have good institutional experience in building such organisations. Anything they come up on their own is likely to be corruption-prone and extortion happy, undermining the very idea of the organisation. Which is a pity, because they can be so much more.
Undumgi do not lock us into being a full-time mayor (unless we want to), which BoneyM graciously clarified.
Undumgi are time-critical. They are being organised right now one way or another, with us or without.

Papers:

Papers are not particularly time-critical. The journemanlings (apart from amberlings) are not going anywhere, they will be staying in k8p for quite some time for reasons of their own.
Papers are a research action. We already have one, and double-dipping in research, in my opinion, is a bit excessive.

All in all, while both options are worthy, the undumgi option seems to be much superior for this round of voting.

Edit: changed uzumgi into proper undumgi. Not sure why I made that mistake. Perhaps the deathwatch meme is too strong?

Undumgi, not Uzumgi.

Undumgi is something like "Watchtower-Men", Uzumgi would be something like "Dead-Men".

Area of K8P have extremely high concentration of waystones. One of the three highest concentrations in a known world. Remaining two are in Athel Loren and in Albion. It should be easy to find not only waystones but also full-blown henges (places where ley lines intersects), and have that as a boost to enchanting and research.

Geomantic web around K8P is likely in tatters after centuries of skaven/greenskin abuse. It's important to survey it and make repairs where needed. Even forgetting stability of Great Vortex (which is of critical importance to all magisters), corrupted henges are gigantic Dhar sinks. Those Dhar pools can grow deep enough that they can spontaneously accreate into Warpstone. I also don't want to even think what could happen if such Dhar pool was released at once.
Are you counting Ulthuan in the known world here? Because it has more waystones than anywhere else. The Isle of the Dead is built of them.

Couple points to this, the waystone network and the geomantic web are different, the waystone network being erected largely by the Elves, on top of the web. The web is natural, the waystones are not. The other point is that AFAIK, nobody outside of the Slann and the Elves knows how to build waystones. We can uncorrupt them because that's usually accomplished by just standing the stones back up IIRC, but we can't build new waystones.

I believe Mathilde has a pistol, not a handgun, and although, yes a crossbow or rifle would outrange either, the only weapon I'm aware of called a rifle, is the Hochland long rifle. The analogue of a regular rifle is the handgun, which is outranged by crossbows, at least on the tabletop.

Folks keep saying that staying with the dwarves is more a short-term arrangement than anything.

It's not.

It's going to take Y E A R S to reclaim all of Karak Eight Peaks. If we stay now, we're going to stay until the job is done. Leaving later, for any significant length of time, would be like leaving a job half-finished.

I don't WANT to stay here for the next couple of years.

We are NOT talking about short-term focus here. We're talking about long-term focus.

Boney seems to be putting the upper limit on Dwarf gun-tech on early 1800s-ish, though without the industrialization, so they're all handmade.
Edit: wait, I think they had shells at Drakenhof. Probably just a Zhufbar thing, though.

To clarify this statement, they likely have the capacity to make rifles. Actually using long-arms like that would be a very niche situation requiring sniper-weapons, as standard muskets and battle rifles would be too long and unwieldy in comparatively shorter dwarf arms. As such, rifles are likely made to order for customers only, and not a part of standard issue weapons for any caliber of dwarf gunsman.
