Look, there's a very clear A-to-B.

Borek walked into Dum, basically went through the plot of Doom, and now, with nothing to live for and no purpose left, found the Axe of Grimnir and will go find his death.

(Joking, mostly)
So... if he's already the Dwarven Doomslayer, what does he expect to be able to actually grant him the death he seeks.

Are the Chaos Gods doing anything this week?

In all seriousness, I don't think it's Gotrek- I don't think Boney would have written as many words as he has about the virtues of Gotrek dying when he did only to pull a switcheroo.

And I'm not sure this would be a new character.

My best bet is that this is Borek, who thought that he could live with the state of Dum, but found he's just as much a stranger there as he is anywhere else.

So he goes south again, finds the Axe, and the rest is (making monsters) history.

I'm probably wrong, but that's my theory.

Borek replacing Gotrek seems doable... But Borek and Felix doesn't flow off the tongue. But I'll be happy if Gotrek can go home to his wife and family.
He's gotten weird in AoS. Especially in the new book.

I hope they keep that mutation factory locked up. Maybe we can send them supplies and oversight. Perhaps petition to have them become the wardens and jailors of that wretched Beastman.

Okay, so, I have a pitch for socialing Gretel right now, and maybe also SilverSpear. But mostly Gretel. See this, right here?

That red line sure is hugging those mountains. But let's look even closer:

(full map)

To explain, this bit in red is a segment of the waystone network disconnected from the empire which historically had been, but no longer is, connected to the Karaz Ankor waystone network; the dotted purple line is where the connection between the networks used to be. Next, let's recall the content of the Gretel social:
[ ] Gretel
She's apparently getting involved in the Karaz Ankor's ambitions in the Border Princes.
So we have some waystones out of anyone's backyard that we care about, but which are about to become Dawi territory administered some folks very specifically friendly to us.

And both Mathilde and Belegar know that Thorgrim uses waystone juice for great work fuckery. Belegar in particular knows that one of said great works is the enabler of the entire silverspear campaign.

At some point in the far future, perhaps the imperial colleges will produce great works of their own to be powered by waystones. Myself, I don't really expect to see such home-grown waystone juice-guzzling projects come to fruition within the scope of this quest. But the empire has some stout neighbors with a rather immediate need for a fix, now don't they? And we want something to cudgel the cult of sigmar with to get them on board with our research, do we not?

We just need somewhere safe first to give the concept a test. How fortunate that Gretel is working on providing us with one! We should check up on her and see if she needs any help making sure it finishes in time for us to, say, have physical medium tributaries working.

Dawi can be counted on not to steal waystone string, after all.

Anyways, the earlier we check in on the border princes, the more likely we can ensure that a development direction like the above doesn't get overly bottlenecked by concerns like "testing site not secure against orc Waaagh!s". Bringing it to fruition would require meeting with high king Thorgrim at some point, and while a successful pitch could net us a boatload more resources for the project it's the not the sort of thing where we're better off the earlier we make contact, unlike Gretel.

Actually, I don't think any version of the silverspear social would even broach the topic, beyond maybe Belegar telling us about the magic CCTV. Consider that one maybe helpful, but thoroughly optional for now.

Do vote Gretel, though.

Problem- the territory Barak Varr wants administered is Mad Dog Pass, to the east of Barak Varr.

I don't think they care about the broader Border Princes.

I said it last turn and I will say it this turn but I think the person coming to see us will be someone asking for help. Because Mathilde is frightening competent. Last turn it was the empress I wonder who it will be this turn.

You hope that the Vampire has at least a few Grudges to its name, as a strike against the Strigoi bloodline in the abstract might be considered by some to have been a poor reason for the journey to have been made.

Hmm, in case the ghoul king doesn't have enough outstanding grudges to justify the journey, I wonder if the library's operating budget could cover some recompense for their help recovering the books (or we could pay ourselves but I fear it's quite a lot). Always pay a dwarf their due, they might have only grumbled but it's bad for a dwarf's psyche to feel like they didn't get paid for their work, be it in material
goods or glory.

Alternatively, we could find some way to recognize their help via the library Perhaps, the room where the legendary anatomical book is gonna be exposed could be named in their honor or something, with all the name of the members of the book mining expedition engraved on the walls.

@Boney, if we had to suddenly produce 2k gold could we borrow it somehow? Perhaps from the EIC, or the Grey College, or from some sort of Dwarf moneylender?

Edit : Actually, we still have outstanding Dwarf Boons. We can probably get cash from them.

There's a number of ways Mathilde could get her hands on that much hard cash if she needed to.

By any normal standard Mathilde held up her end of the bargain. Vampire interred, gribblies slain, manlings strengthened, Vlad's pad trashed, Dwarf skeletons recovered. It's just not quite at the level of enthusiastic walk that Mathilde's reputation may have led them to hope for.

As much as I keep voting to check in on the Amber College, I'm starting to come around to the idea of not checking in on them for so long that when the thread finally does so, the conversation goes:

"So how about those salamanders, then?"

"...Salamanders?"

"Yeah, I donated some fire salamander eggs to you guys like...oh wow, must be thirty years ago now. How are they doing, are they liking their new digs?"

"Lady Magister, Lustrian fire salamanders have a lifespan of about eight years, and we didn't get a breeding pair out of those eggs."

"..."

"I think we had one taxidermied for the museum, if you'd like to see it?"

What would be Mathilde's equivalent of going "Release Restraint Level Zero"? Using the secrets of the Liber Mortis, deploying all her stashed Dawi Boons and College Favour, drinking all her stored Aethyric Vitae, incarnating herself as the Avatar of Ranald... any other significant resources that she could burn if she truly, truly went all out?

I got as far as "kill Belegar and frame whoever it is that's the target" and then decided I don't want to play this game any more.

To keep this in funny territory, I feel like Releasing Restraint Level Zero is to stop doing funny puns and to dedicate all her actions per turn onto a singular thing until she actually masters it instead of doing a more balanced scattershot approach.

This... actually makes a lot of sense. Mathilde's most valuable resource is not all the other things I'd mentioned, but the trust that she has earned with the Dawi in general and Belegar in particular. Out of all the options at her disposal, the most powerful thing she could do against her selected target would be to turn the Dawi's collective wrath on the target, indeed by "killing Belegar and frame whoever it is that's the target".

We should keep this option in our pocket.
