Shit, this is actually an amazing point. While she's within the public spaces of the city with Night Prowler, until she starts doing violence she cannot be noticed if she doesn't want to be. That's an amazing advantage to have for surreptitious interception of someone.

Aren't you getting your conclusions mixed up here? If Alric knows that the murders are connected to the Haupt-Anderssen deaths while also not knowing that the eighth death wasn't actually a death then that's what would make him expect a total if eight planned murders. What Alric doesn't know (according to Mathilde) is that the eighth is not a straightforward murder. That seven could potentially be enough for the ritual and/or that the eighth victim might not need to be an Unfähiger.

Doesn't that train of thought mean that waiting at the spa is even better? The tunnels are numerous, so even if we are with a detachment of Tunnel Terriers Alberich might take a different tunnel past a different detachment. But if he wants to continue his ritual he has to get to the Unfähigers. So intercepting him there is the option with the smallest chance of missing him due to not being at the right place in time.

Mathilde not being able to add her trait bonus doesn't mean she has nothing to add at all.

Fighting him at the spa has three potential downsides: 1) We're better at fighting in tunnels.
2) Alric might well spot him first
&
3) The ritual's magic will be breaching from the Warp there and then, which may well make him more powerful.

It does, though, since it means that Mathilde can extremely thoroughly check a region to make sure nobody is in it, without the slightest risk of the target noticing that someone's locked down that area and looking for an alternate route.
 
I just want the epic moment of The Dämmerlichtreiter riding through the city at speed on a shadow horse (possibly with a band of hunter-knights behind her on the Rite of Way spell.)

Sure, if she rolls the dice right and lands on the route he ends up taking she'll be able to catch him more easily. I didn't say there was no benefit, but it's a modest benefit at best, as it only comes into play if the harder part of things was already done. So it does not to me outweigh the possibility of prepositioning ourselves where we think he's likely to go. Or being in the best place to respond to signals.
 
@Boney, two questions.

(1) can Mathilde combine Shadowsteed and Night Prowler to ride rapid circuits of the city without being noticed?

If so, then if Talabheim (pop 72,000) is about the size of 1550 London, about a square mile, I'd imagine she could patrol the city fairly intensively as long as her attention held out.

This would be a point in favor of "with the Longshanks": she could hope for a good shot at personally spotting Alberich, even if he hypnotizes whatever Longshanks he encounters.

(2) are the tunnel entrances a narrow enough patrol circuit that "with the Tunnel Brigade" Mathilde could expect to detect Alberich's presence approaching? Or is the Tunnel Brigade choice just a way for her to get to the fight faster, still trusting someone else to spot him?

Of course, "with the Tunnel Brigade" is a bet on Alberich leaving by the tunnels. But I can't tell whether the bet is a "Here I can detect him myself, even if he hypnotizes the regulars," or if the bet is just "Here I can join the fight faster, as long as someone does spot him without getting hypnotized."

I apologize if this feels like it is derailing the discussion for the vote, if there is a better time/place to discuss this let me know. Since I just finished reading the quest a few days ago I am now trying to catch up with the threads thoughts on long term planning. Some questions that might have been answered at one point and I couldn't find it:
  1. Is there a list of what is available to be learned? Is it just training skills or learning spells? I am also curious if Mathilde would need to learn how to make a power stone for the "Investigate how the Vitae reacts to being subjected to power stone creation methods" action or if that is just blocked on "Investigate how the Vitae reacts to a power stone".
  2. Mathilde and Max just learned how to do ritual magic and I didn't see the conversation for why. Is this part of some plan?
  3. Is there a list or some coordination on what books to buy for the library?
  4. Learning new magic (especially Battle Magic) and creating new spells/enchantments (especially Windherder spells) seems really dangerous and prone to catastrophic miscasts. Is there a plan for managing this risk and making sure the reward is worth it? Maybe spreading it out and using the Gambler face of the coin when attempting it? I did see the post for Approved Spells but it just lists ideas.
