Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
LQ had a warm cabin in the depths of winter metaphor going on for a while but GG seems to be an excellent warm sun complement.

LQ buffs close allies. GG buffs all the supporting troops. Gonna be a great pairing for CRX when all her supporting units are hulking out just as much as their commanding officers are.

Plus no one other than GG is the sunny warm radiant leader type. GG offers something the party lacks.

"Hm, why are they bothering anyway?" Sixiang asked curiously, alighting on her head. "It's not like you really need a road, if you weren't bringing all the building stuff."

"This is how you defeat the Cloud Tribes," Ling Qi replied, thinking back to lessons and books. "If you just defeat them and drive them away, even if you kill tribes entirely, new ones will flow back in like water into an empty river bed. If you want to keep them out you need to take the land."

"Ah, I think I get it," Sixiang said. "It's about making the land and the spirits yours and not theirs."
I must admit, this is the first time I've seen road-building used as a piety action as opposed to a stewardship action.

Yin and Yang should be also polar opposites, so I think combining opposites shouldn't be hard, especially within the Argent Sect, whose shtick is balance. Prolly plenty of techniques and seniors with experience to pass down.

Lots of interesting info here. From the Ship sighting, to the leylines garden info, to the Sun reveal.

But but but, I think my favorite bit will be how Ling Qi has finally had her "they look like ants from up here" moment, and it was even combo'ed with a "here is the spirit of the Empire" line. Absolute perfection. Ling Qi has certainly made best use of her "brooding like an overgrown crow" in my opinion.

"That doesn't sound like you," Ling Qi mused. "You were all about others before."

"That has not changed," Gan Guangli replied confidently. "However, my trials have taught me that Mastery of self must come first. Achieve excellence and others will follow you there. Achieve that excellence and inspire them as well? This is what makes loyalty unbreakable."
It's interesting that Gan came to a similar conclusion as Renxiang did when she took third in the tournament and at the time wasn't about dueling. That in order to boost everyone around you, you have to be strong to enough to lift them up.

Elder Bei Yongrui reminded me of Gan Guangli when we saw him in the last turn, a mountain with caverns lit by dawn. He's the giant with many golden hands much as Gan Guangli's own techniques. Either his Arts were made by the Elder or they're from similar sources, so it's nice to see Guangli take up some Sun because at least Elder Bei Yongrui seemed like a nice guy even at Violet.

I'm...Not seeing the problem? If people are busy thinking of that OTHER Sun, that's one angle, but I don't think it works like that unless he gets grabbed and turned into a rung on that spear or something like that. And I'd think he'd rather thoroughly protest that happening to him.

"That has not changed," Gan Guangli replied confidently. "However, my trials have taught me that Mastery of self must come first. Achieve excellence and others will follow you there. Achieve that excellence and inspire them as well? This is what makes loyalty unbreakable."

"I'm glad you found your answers," Ling Qi said. "Did one of those trials happen to be at a site dedicated to the sun?"

Gan Guangli grinned. "Just so, Miss Ling."

I can see it now.

Gan's new catchphrase:

An Unusual applicant
Zhengui wants to learn about geomancy? That would be a fun omake...

An Unusual Applicant

"Sir, Sect Master Zuo Shi, we have a dilemma."

"What dilemma, Elder Tao, is of such grave severity that it requires my personal attention and can not be handled by you or your subordinates?"

"We have an interesting applicant to our Sect that… you should approve or deny as the head of our sect."

"I figured that there was an issue with an applicant given your department, but, again, why can you not make the decision?"

"The applicant's submission is supported with arguments drafted by Cai Renxiang, the heir apparent to the Emerald Seas, sir. Such arguments have been viewed and debated amongst our legal experts and we have even applied for help from higher-ranking members of the Ministry of Law, and the results are depressingly clear. To deny the applicant admission would be to disobey the Empresses' edicts and violate the Empire's laws."

"Why is the admission in question then? I'm not seeing a reason why I should be the one to approve or deny the applicant if even the Ministry of Law says that to deny would be in violation of the Empresses' edicts."

"The applicant isn't human, sir."

"What?"

"Not human, as in, not formed from the clay of the Nameless Mother and given life by the Breath of the Nameless Father."

"I'm not asking for a theology lesson on what makes someone a human, Elder! I'm asking why the applicant isn't human!"

"They weren't born human, sir? I'm confused by your question."

"... What are they?"

"A Xuanwu. A peculiar breed of Xuanwu found in the Emerald Seas only recently."

"Name?"

"Zhengui"

"Hmph, age?"
"14 years old, sir"

"Stage of cultivation?"

"Cyan, sir."

"And the Ministry of Law has determined that Lady Cai's arguments are of sufficient merit that to deny the applicant would be against the Empresses' edicts?"

"... yes sir."

"Approve the application, and may the Great Spirits have mercy on our souls."

Entering the Imperial Hammer Sect hadn't been his first choice in life, Wao Lu thought. But when the Ministry of Integrity told him that he could either enter a sect and become a cultivator or stay and keep farming the land his ancestors had farmed for countless generations, he had been on the wagon before they could finish. Because while working the land certainly had some appeal, consistency and dependability came to mind, being a cultivator and shaping literal mountains to be more useful had a lot more appeal. And a lot more money. But now that he was here… things were getting a lot more confusing. Unusual and confusing.

Everyone had been assigned roommates and directed to lodgings. Except him. Oh, he had been directed to his lodgings but the name of his roommate was Zhen Tui or something, he wasn't entirely sure. Because his roommate wouldn't be living in the housing set aside by the Sect. Apparently, Zhen Tui was "too large" to live in the standard housing, and that accommodations had to be made somewhere on this mountain. How a person could be so fat as to not fit inside the housing, and still be alive, he didn't know.

He was about to find out though. Since this individual was his roommate, he had been assigned to get him for the daily lessons and to make sure that this Zhen Tui made it to the lectures on time. However, as he followed his map, he began to hear a strange rumbling and a hissing. Upon turning the corner, he found a sprawling hill, covered in strange mixing of vents where he could see a mirage of heat and trees sprouting throughout the hill. Atop the hill sat a giant turtle with a snake wrapped around it, both heads glaring at each other.

"I...I ap...apolgize for my intrusion mighty spirit," Wao Lu stammered out while bowing low.

The two heads turned and peered at him, two eyes blazing green and two eyes blazing red. It seemed that they were looking past him, not really seeing him at the moment. Which was great. Fantastic even! He could just slowly walk backward and see where he had made a wrong turn.

"Are you Wao Lu?" The spirit beast asked, his two voices sending the air vibrating almost painfully.

He paused. "Ah.. yes?"

"Excellent!" Boomed the spirit as it began to trundle towards him, shrinking with every step. "Elder Tao indicated that you would be my roommate and that our lessons would be together. I, the magnificent Zhengui, appreciate your assistance in this matter. We are sure that with your help our understanding of geomantic principles will greatly deepen."

This had to be a terrible mistake.

A/N: Here's a quick little thing about Zhengui learning at the Imperial Hammer Sect because they are the premier school for individuals wanting to learn large scale terrain manipulation and weather control. I also think it would be hilarious for a very traditional Imperial school to be forced to accept Zhengui because someone forgot to stipulate that only humans could apply to Sects.

@yrsillar another omake for the omake throne!

The tribulations of the Imperial Hammer Sect and it's first fully spirit student would be a worthy quest in it's own right, it's too bad that Shenhua will be setting too demanding a pace for Zhengui to go to school.

Are there any plans to rank up composure any time soon? It'd be good for our poise to go up, since we're a diplomat.

I don't know if it's the dawn sun. Isnt that one about art and expression?
It seems so, yeah, if Lin Hai's any example of her adherents. Nonetheless, I don't see any contradiction. What use is art, of any method of expression, if not to inspire and evoke feelings from others?

That Gan Guangli seeks to turn himself into a work of art strikes me as no different than Ling Qi seeking the world's songs, in their adherence to their (presumptive) patrons.

Hmmm.. maybe. I don't remember a list of all the sun types. If there is a difference between dawn and morning suns than I would agree that GG is a morning sun guy. The noon sun would likely be too harsh for his style of leadership.
While they don't have official names yet, here's a wog about them

Eternal_ObserverToday at 1:59 AM well, I can't find the wog of the number of Suns spirits so I can't back up my claim so may as well ask @Yrsillar compared to the Moon's eight phases, how many phases does the Sun have?

YrsillarToday at 2:06 AM I was thinking five but I havent decided exactly what portfolios to give them

Eternal_ObserverToday at 2:07 AM is it like Dawn, Rising, Noon, Descending, Dusk?

YrsillarToday at 2:07 AM mostly yeah

In this case, I'm mostly thinking that Gan's either a Rising Sun or a Noon Sun

Shen Hu's Sun spirit meanwhile strikes me as Afternoon since he's always napping and it's the time of the day that people would nap sometimes. It's just my take on it though
