A quote straight from the design.

"The MiS-27 is a multirole jet meant to be used as a fighter-bomber, interceptor, attack, and reconnaissance aircraft."

@HeroCooky, can I get updated costing on the two actions above? Also, how come improving our intelligence services is suspicious? Wouldn't it be secret - or at least very opaque from the western standpoint?
-1 Rep and -2 CO respectively.

The IS-Action is suspicious 'cause you are going from: "Barebones Equiment And Organization" to "Best The Twink-Supreme Can Acquire" for your IS. People will notice, and some won't like that.
Speed Demon, Barrier Breaker
Like it. Choose:

[] +2 to all Aircraft Designs
[] -1d3 Actions required for Develop an Orbital Satellite (You Roll)
[] -1d6 Actions required for Construct a Cosmodrome (You Roll)

[X] +2 to all Aircraft Designs

This will either turn all future aircraft designs into flying artsy instruments of death and destruction… or slightly less impressive explosions. :V

The First Seeds
"You're still working on that?"

Chailai sighed tiredly, always the same reaction. "Of course I am, do you think I'd just stop after only a few months?"

"A few months without any investment or interest, yeah. You're too smart to be banging your head against rocks and getting ignored." Ren Yuan answered, a co-worker, though one far more interested in tried and tested applications of farming and botany, than the high ideals Chailai had. Ren would be more than happy to see Guangzhou covered in fields from end to end without any thought for the wider environment.

"It isn't that I'm being ignored, it's just that... they don't see the value yet, so I have to figure out how to make them understand. I have to add value to the project that they won't be able to pass over."

"Yeah the problem is we don't need it." Ren said with a hearty laugh. "Even if we were absolutely desperate for land to harvest, it would be better here to build Huglekultur raised beds. Something like your food towers would only be useful in places with limited space, or hostile conditions."

She couldn't help but sigh. "From your perspective, sure, but I have different goals, besides, I've already thought along those lines. From what I've been hearing, there is a large and growing interest is space. I had decided that maybe it would be a good test bed for building an ecosystem in a sealed environment, but it's incredibly complex and extends far outside my specialties. I've read of an attempt elsewhere called BIOS-3 in Krasnoyarsk in Russia, but no-one has bothered responding to my messages requesting details."

"Well of course they haven't, you're a woman with no notable accomplishments. You'd be better off asking one of the higher ups in the Institute to act as your go between."

Chailai couldn't help but grumble at that. "I'd rather die." Though that just got another laugh from Ren. "Isn't that what they say over in America? Publish or Die?"

"Publish or Perish." Came the haughty, correcting tone of Na Rong as he walked into the lab. "I got your message, and I just came to tell you that a few of my fellows would be somewhat interested in the challenge. Building a closed ecological system seems far more useful to the countries ambitions, both here, overseas and in the stars above."

Chailai couldn't help but sigh again. What a farce, that to protect the only known biosphere in existence, she'd have to figure out how to build other smaller ones. Knowing her luck, a hundred years from now only the little biospheres would be left and the Planet itself would be ruined. Why did no-one understand?

"I suppose I'll have to march to the end to get back to the beginning." She muttered. Maybe this at least would get the attention of their Glorious Leader.

HeroCooky, I know there a bit of timey whimey stuff going on with what actions actually do in game. I was originally planning to establish links with Afghanistan this turn, but the Saur Revolution kicks off in the middle of this turn in the OTL. Would this sort of acausal planning be covered by gameplay and story segregation or should I shuffle stuff around to send envoys next turn?

@HeroCooky, I think this got lost in the shuffle.

I'mma need a title, and a choice:
[] +3 Reputation to Construct an Experimental Vertical Hydroponics Test-Building
[] Negate the First Life Support System Failure for any Space Action
[] Unlock the Biology Laboratory Space Station Module

Oh damn, thats a tough choice. Uh, I guess for the name of the snip, lets call it 'The first seeds' since I like the idea of planting seeds in harsh places and making life grow, weather it be on the moon, in space, on Mars or even a desert or Antarctica.

In terms of choices.... Ah! I really want to entice the building of vertical hydroponics, but even with reputation attatched to it, I don't think any of the plan makers will go for it.

I guess I'll take [X] Negate the First Life Support System Failure for any Space Action

It would be something that's built as part of the space push later on, I think. It would serve as the ground based control sample for space based ecology life support experiments.

One worthwhile possibility for long-term nuclear power decisions might be, if we didn't want to jump all the way to MSBRs and the use of thorium, to just work off of the fuel chemistry and general architecture of TRIGA reactors, which are incapable of ever melting down because a non-boiling coolant pool is actually necessary for the maintenance of criticality. Not the most productive reactor design, granted, which is why it's historically used for research reactors, but it's entirely capable of being used for power production and one of the most passively safe and simple designs ever crafted.

So... time to start voting, I guess?

I'm hoping that we can layer bonuses enough to leapfrog some nuclear reactor design. For instance: +5 from China Aid, +6 Any Technology +6 Reactor Design means we're rolling at +17, and at that point I think TRIGA is just not worth it. Fingers crossed we might jump all the way to Molten Salt Fast Reactors.

@HeroCooky, could you make another informational post that holds all the Commiewood submissions so people have an easier time looking them up for voting? I've gathered them all up below (only the ones with names, there are a few that were just summaries and I didn't include those):

[] The Queen And The Tiger
(An ancient play of Guangchous past, though one usually played with heavy input from the audience. Within, a Queen is being seduced by a Tiger Demoness disguised as a Courtesan, a play of intrigue, romance, and corruption that sets even the most cold-hearted person to tears when the Demoness admits her true love to the dying Queen.)

[] The Last Voyage
(A dramatic yet realistic re-enactment of the last days of the fleet of Guangchou, before the Imperial Japanese Navy got handed a humiliating defeat at the cost of all hands and ships of Guangchou. Let the world know the bravery of these men and women, and let their deeds inspire new generations of sailors.)

[] VOTOMS
(Straight up VOTOM, seven years early. This time, with Mecha based on the Iron Tigers. Really rub it into the world's face before you release them at this Plan's end.)

[] Love, Death, And Robots; The End Of All
(A satirical look at human nature and a warning on what could happen if we don't reign in our worst impulses.)

[X] Songs of the City
(A surreal crime-thriller, focusing on esoteric and unconventional images to show a story that is depressingly mundane and commonplace in other nations.)

[] The Four Corners -- South
An adaptation of the Star Wars formulat into a more political and histprically materialist science-fantasy setting.

[X] COSMOS
A hard sci-fi version of Star Trek with strong social and political commentary, Cosmos follows the crew of the interstellar vessel Rosetta on their mission to explore the galaxy. Told in a 12 episode mini-series with overarching character development arcs but serialized A-plots.

[] Nigh Witches
A historical drama following the 588th Night Bomber Regiment during the Great Patriotic War, exploring the lives of the soviet airwomen - through with some embellishment for the big screen. An instant cult classic among lesbians everywhere. Notable for it's realism - Commiewood got a ton of actual footage of the actual planes IRL, and interviewed surviving members of the Night Witches.

[X] Natchthexen
What if we made Night Witches... but we made them actual witches? (As above, but in a historical fantasy setting AU)

[] The Battlestar Potemkin
A complete re-imagining of the Soviet classic in a hard sci-fi setting where a rogue planet has destroyed the Earth and humanity was forced to evacuate into space where the Cold War began anew between the United Stations of America, and the Union of Soviet Space Republics.

[] Hellburner
Victorian occult space opera with demon-thermal powered steam rockets, girls dressing as boys to join spaceship crews, and Space!Colonialism.

[] Friendship Beach
A Sesame Street clone that focuses on Guangchou values while providing basic entertainment and education for pre-school kids. A serialized show featuring live action actors, puppets and animated shorts where popular figures from Guangchou history and public life can make appearances to provide quick and simple education segments.

[] At Auntie's House
A serialized comedy/drama that some from another timeline would recognize as a Soap Opera, the show depicts the interpersonal struggles of a family divided: the home of Auntie (name tbd by someone more Asian than me) of Guangchou, whose extended family have, through a series of events, come to stay for a time at her home in Guangchou. Her nephew, who fled to America during the time of Wei Cai, and his family, and her niece, who left for China. Both hold Auntie in great regard, and each episode shows the two sides of the family disagreeing on some matter due to their acculturation and only being kept from breaking into a deep family-ending feud by their mutual respect for Auntie and the rest of The Old Family. To be produced in both English and Mandarin, so as to drive the very blatant point home across the seas both wide and narrow.
Foreign Diplomatic assessment: The Most Glorious Democratic People's Republic of Guangchou, Light of All Nations, Defender of Humanity, and Paradise on Earth sure is full of itself.

edit: Oh gods. That tally is so borked.

Alright, I've decided on my Commiewood vote:

[] [COMMIEWOOD] CommiePop

A departure from the visual medium, this turn sees Commiewood focus on releasing several music albums featuring their take on western pop music. The so called CommiePop genre borrows the repeated choruses and hooks, short to medium-length, basic format, and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to that Pop is know for but engages heavily with political and social themes instead of eschewing them.

I've also added RP actions to Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy:

-[] Wei Jungming - (RP)
--[] Personal Action: Wei is making you attend some seminars at Mingxiang after getting fed up with your lack of engineering sense.
--[] Personal Action: Go out among the refugees incognito and see if there's any issues you should be aware of that aren't filtered up through official channels.
--[] Lover Action: Beach episode with the family. You kids are old enough now to enjoy themselves, and yourself and Mai would no doubt appreciate the break as well.

I also have one major critique of the Pen is Mightier plan: Language rationalization means we won't have enough actions to either finish the reactor (necessary for offsetting the cost of Agricultural Councils which we need so that we don't have to keep dedicating actions to just keeping our heads above water food wise), or to meet all our plan goals (we'd have to drop either Airy Might or Army Logistics).

Remember all: were very action constrained right now.

I just got a idea for a commiewood thing. We do a religious documentary about the bible in a manner that supports liberation theology. Considering the fact that before this most of our movies have been sci-fi and fantasy it would be hilarious having everyone has to deal with the fact that the same place that produced lesbian witch movies also produced a halfway decent documentary on religion.

You know what? I'm just going to defer to you for this one, since you seem to have it all planned out.

You set the goals for this 5YP so you only got you're self to blame for the crunch.

(i even went back to make sure what i write is true and you're 5YP won the vote)

That is true, this is an entirely self-inflicted pain on my part. :p

I'm my defense, the back of envelope math I did suggested it was fine - I didn't realize how bad it was until I made the spreadsheet. 😅
