But also, whoa whoa whoa, turbine inlet 1900C?
What the office of national statistics can't prove won't hurt us. Nickel superalloys melt at about 1450C but there's some fun tricks you can use to whack the engine temperatures up to 1500 or even 1600 if you're feeling brave. 1900 is absolutely out of the question, but again, what the office can't prove...

Those pressure ratios are also off the charts.
The office - Actually the numbers are from 90s designs which means modern production. The F-35 runs at 1980C and a 28-29 pressure ratio. In a similar vein if we were actually making this engine it would be relying on 50s or 60s numbers (aircraft produced in the 70s) As it is we need to look at the late 80s and mid 90s to see a relatively accurate end result.

You say stage, do you mean spool?
No.

I also favuor a two spool compressor for the added simplicity compared to a three stage, especially because our magnetic bearings are heavy.
You're confusing staged compressors with spooled compressors. A twin spool will have a LP compressor connected by shaft to a LP turbine and a HP compressor connected to a HP turbine. The stages relate to those individual compressors and turbines.

Yeah, I realized my mistake afterwards and edited my post. But my objection to the temperature stands:

Likewise for the size of the engine and the T/M ratio.

Whaaaaat? The numbers are wrong? Nah, they can't be wrong. They're numbers.

I know, I'm screwing around with this thing and it'll get all boring and sensible later.

Likewise for the size of the engine and the T/M ratio.
The size & T/W is fine for the 'alleged' turbine temperature. EJ-200 is about the same size and has 6.2-9.2 at 1550C or something like that.

Which is a somewhat optimistic expectation for an engine designed in the late 70s but not impossible with upgrades.

But since this one has been developed in the late 70s we must unfortunately limit ourselves to (checks notes) something like a slightly better F-117 looking F-15/F-16 thing or a crappy Dassault Rafale.

Also I edited the post where I replied so you might want to reread it.

TBH while it's fun to throw ideas back and forth, adding details like number of stages and turbine inlet temps is probably out of scope. HC is only really going to be able to use the qualitative description.
Soviet engines were also pretty decent on performance grounds - though fuel hungry. Their real flaw was the short time between overhauls, which happened mostly because the Soviets had to push their engines much harder to match western performance.

With regards to the missiles, you want to reference Soviet rather than American systems, because those are what we actually have to work with. Also we haven't had a chance to do high end R&D integration, so we make do with mostly Soviet export grade tech.

Edit: Also, our stealth tech right now is kind of janky, but broadly it would probably be accurate to say we can get RCS down to Super Hornet / Rafale levels.

Muh brain is probs just exhausted, but I'm assuming this is a bit of wordplay from Uncle Fester to Faster, since it's an engine and all. And not a typo.
Yes. Because sending "missile Morticia sweet and deadly" is just fine, but if your engine is named for something an infected wound does when one vowel over you instead have an invocation of speed?

I'd rather have the speed thanks.

That's correct!

Also, lmao. I just realized that if we do end up ripping off Starship-Superheavy for our space access megaproject, then we could literally loft all of Mir up in a single launch.

The wonders of 150 tonnes to LEO, baybee.

In fact... we might be able to have it done in time for the 1986 launch date. We'd most likely have to delay national rail or healthcare buildup tho.

Something to think about on the end of the plot.

Edit: If instead of lofting the original Mir modules, Roskosmos redesigned Mir into a unitary station like their previous Salyuts, then the internal volume could double for the same mass.

I don't think any of the engine's will fit into my MiS-27 design since it's derived from the MiG-21 and the Saab J37 Viggen and as shuch i don't think i will this turn and instead let the pendulum swing as it may.

And yes i am use the pendulum as a metaphor for the vote.

I glaze over when gearheads start talking pure specs without any references to application. It might be part of why I'm so heavily Team Butter when guns-or-butter things come up, because the application for Butter things is built in.

Unless you're going to put together your own proposal that will suit your designs, a design that doesn't take into account available hardware is about like a sports coach that insists players fit into their system regardless of where their talents actually lie. I have yet to run into anybody who's said it's a good thing.

Adapt. Be resourceful and use what's available. Or make something available that works for what you want to do.

I'm not going to claim I understand any of the technical talk for this one, so I'm just going to pick one and vote.

You know what i'll just put in what i wrote where the General Characteristics of the MiS-27 as a refresher.

Crew: 1
Length: 15 m excluding pilot tube
Wingspan: 10 m
Height: 6 m
Wing area: 45? m²
Powerplant: Type 3 "Ch" (on page 132)

Armament.

2 Modified 25mm M/71 autocannons with 420 rounds.
8 hard points. (for rockets, bombs, missiles, etc)

And what i which wrote without going into real detail.

design Type 3 "Ch"

Type: Jet.
Max: thrust: 5700 kgf.
Afterburner: 8000 kgf.
Mass: 1250 kg.

You can guess if the engine's could fit into the MiS-27 while also meeting standard i wished the Type 3 "Ch" to meet.

And i losely based the Type 3 "Ch" on the Tumasky R-29-300 (of the MiG-23M in war thunder) and the Saturn AL-7F-1-100 (of the Su-7B in war thunder).

(and i am still not sure what i meant when first wrote pilot boom...i think i was referring to the tube sticking out the front of the MiG-21)

(It turns out that the tube is a pilot tube meant to measure airspeed of the aircraft)

(Although why don't we pilot boom as the codename for the pilot tube?)

I know rail has underlying global infrastructure benefits but we've been told our healthcare system is pretty much in shambles and it doesn't matter how much product you can move if your people are sick all the time or dead from preventable stuff.

I'm not quite sure how we go about pushing it, but that's probably my next push.

Step 1: Send Enbies to Cuba. :V

I think we can leverage our industry to provide industrial aid to Cuba in exchange for auto progress on a healthcare megaproject similar to our Educational Reform one.

I am super-undereducated and over-propagandized on Cuba.

From what I've been able to pick up, they're fairly interventionist (yay for Guangchou) but kinda lousy on the human rights and super iron-fisty. Healthcare-wise, they're super-great on providers but have struggled with supplies. If we could get into the pharma / supplies (including electronics?) side of it (organic chemistry includes medicines and what I'm going to call energetic compounds because that's fuels and explosives and other things, so it's not too far afield for us) we could really improve things on both sides.

I am 100% certain there are enormous issues I'm missing, but that's my starting point.

The ADAAMS Family

(Advanced Air-to-Air Missile System)
Name: Short Range Anti Air Missile (SRAAM)
NATO Nickname: "Pugsley"
Type: Short Range Anti-Air Missile
Branch: Airy
Intended Role: WVR Air Combat
Notable Quirks:
  • Off-Bore Sight
  • Consumable Thrust Vectoring
  • Stowable Fins
  • The Student Has Surpassed the Teacher (AIM-9)
Fluff
  • Hydrazine/IRFNA liquid rocket. Hazardous, but not more hazardous than a solid rocket motor, just differently hazardous. Russian and American missile development locked into the solid fuel tech tree path before Inhibited (and thus safer to store) RFNA was developed.
  • L/D ratio of 20 to minimize drag.
  • Longer range and powered flight envelope due to higher specific impulse of hypergolic propellant.
  • Larger than the R-33 that it's based on but the same weight (due to less dense propellants).
  • Thrust vectoring via ablative jet vanes for close-in maneuvers at low speed. These get ablated as the missile picks up speed, and aerodynamic control surfaces take over.
  • Stowable fins come standard because it's meant to be mounted in volume-limited internal bays.
  • Comes in RADAR and thermal seeker variants meant to be fired in pairs following Soviet doctrine.
  • Off boresight is the significant seeker improvement and applies to both RADAR and thermal seekers, but does not yet have all aspect seeking capabilities for the heat-seeking version (sensors insufficiently developed).
  • Superior electronics to both the K-13 it's roughly based on, and to the AIM-9 that the K-13 is based on, but seeker sensitivity bottlenecks their effectiveness for the heat-seeking version.
  • Blast-fragmentation warhead is not the ideal tool for every job, but it's adequate for just about any job.
Name: Medium Range Anti Air Missile (MRAAM)
NATO Nickname: "Wednesday"
Type: Medium Range Anti-Air Missile
Branch: Airy
Intended Role: WVR/BVR Air Combat
Notable Quirks:
  • Off-Bore Sight
  • Large Powered Envelope
  • Stowable Fins
  • Datalink
Fluff
  • A grown-up version of the SRAAM that shares the same warhead, seekers, and actuators but features more fuel and a larger engine.
  • Omits thrust vectoring in favor of aerodynamic control and a throttleable engine that lets it reduce thrust after the initial burn, allowing it to cruise more efficiently in sustainer mode and maintain a larger powered flight envelope.
  • Mounts a data link that allows for mid-flight course corrections from the launching aircraft and retargets or remotely detonates the missile. Can't talk to other missiles (yet).
  • RADAR seeker is larger and more capable than the SRAAM to allow for better performance in BVR scenarios, but the thermal seeker is identical.
Name: Long Range Anti Air Missile (LRAAM)
NATO Nickname: "Morticia"
Type: Long Range Anti-Air Missile
Branch: Airy
Intended Role: BVR Air Combat
Notable Quirks:
  • A Real Chonker
  • Stowable Fins
  • High Speed, Low Drag
  • Datalink
Fluff
  • Throttleable kerosene fueled ramjet with an underslung ramp inlet and a solid rocket motor first stage integrated into the combustion chamber.
  • Mach 5 sprint/Mach 4 cruise designed to chase down high-speed American recon planes or hit tankers/AWACS from long range.
  • Beefier transceiver for its datalink compared to MRAAM to account for longer ranges, but otherwise identical. Can't talk to other missiles (yet).
  • Takes up the same space as 2-3 MRAAMS, even with the stowable fins.
Name: Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM, 'askim')
NATO Nickname: "Gomez"
Type: Anti-Ship Cruise Missile
Branch: Airy
Intended Role: Anti-Ship
Notable Quirks:
  • Stealthy
  • Datalink
  • Very Long Range
  • Dual Seekers
  • Rolling Takeoff
Fluff
  • More of a suicide drone than a missile.
  • Tailless delta wing within a high wing configuration creates a flat top surface for radar from airborne planes to bounce away from. (It looks like it's flying "upside down.")
  • Engine inlet and outboard stabilizers are both mounted below the wing so that it shadows them from above.
  • Sea skimming makes it harder to detect and reduces engagement from close-in defenses.
  • Efficient medium bypass turbofan gives it good fuel consumption, coupled with large fuel tanks to let it travel far, far out to sea.
  • Slow and relies on its datalink to get a mid-course correction from other assets tracking its target.
  • Meant to swarm its target and use ECM and pen aids instead of speed to penetrate its defensive perimeter - taking advantage of superior electronics.
  • The larger size means it mounts both a thermal and radar seeker, making it harder to fool with ECM and flares.
  • Somewhat uniquely, it's designed to do a rolling takeoff from a road or airfield using a disposable tricycle sled. In theory, it could also be thrown out the back of a cargo plane, but that's not yet been implemented.
Name: Common Aircraft Engine
NATO Nickname: "Faster"
Type: Low Bypass Turbofan
Branch: Airy
Intended Role: Fighter/Transport Powerplant
Notable Quirks:
  • Reliable A.F.
  • I'm a Big Fan
  • On The Verge of Greatness
Fluff
  • Based on R-35-300.
  • Magneto-aerodynamic no-contact bearings remove the need for a bearing oil system and drastically increase the reliability and time between overhauls. Also, act as a built-in starter and electrical generator.
  • Full Authority Digital Electronic Controller (FADEC) manipulates engine parameters to keep it performing at its peak for a given condition without requiring human input. It also keeps tabs on engine health to assist the maintenance schedule.
  • Electromechanically actuated vanes (and con-div nozzle in the fighter version) remove the need for an engine hydraulic system (lower weight, less maintenance).
  • 95 kN dry thrust fighter variant is 10-12 kN higher than its parent. If you showed this engine to a Soviet engineer, they would think this was meant to go on a small strategic bomber, not a fighter.
  • Why is it so overpowered? Because Guang aerospace engineers seemed to have a single-engine boner and were planning on eventually creating a more affordable single-engine version of the then-under-development MiG-29. Cost considerations also mean that the transport aircraft and fighters developed as part of Airy Modernization had to share an engine core. Hence, the turbine and compressors had to be able to deliver enough power to get a fat pig of an AWACS airborne.
  • While better metallurgy and control systems than its Soviet parent bumped the thrust up a respectable amount, and Mingxiang's engineers eventually gave in and let the engine diameter grow, the performance still falls short of the targeted 100 kN of dry thrust. Further iterative design is required to perfect this engine to its final form.
  • Almost as an afterthought, the Faster's power gives a MiG-23 derived plane means it can brute force it's way into super cruising at Mach 1.1. This shit supercruise eats into operational range only slightly less than going full afterburner, but it was still the first aircraft that could do so!
AN: I tried coming up with fluff for the past three days. At this point, I just have to accept that the write-in is sufficient to convey that you now have plane stuff. Or that Cyber is too good with the write-ins. Let me have my prose, dagnabit! >:c

Usually, having twelve women in your office wouldn't be a problem, and for some attracted to that gender, it would be seen as a net positive, especially as all twelve women were in their military uniforms and doing their best to appear as charming as possible toward me.

Joke's on them; command chose me precisely because they couldn't seduce me. Score one for Team Aero-Ace!

The joke's on me; they could still make my life difficult by appealing to a humans base nature: our weakness against cute and adorable things.

"Oh, come on, Chi~! Nobody would ever know~," Squadron-Leader Li spoke, giving me her best "puppy eyes" as the rest of her team provided auxiliary support, trying to whittle me down with sheer numbers alone. "We could even make it ~worth your time~ for any troubles?" She continued, pouting as I didn't move a single muscle, and my face still conveyed my thoughts on what was going on.

"SL Li," I began, making her look at me with big, hopeful, teary eyes. "No."

"OH FUCK YOU!" Came her immediate retort, flipping me off as various disappointed exclamations came from the background crew. "Why the Marx not? Third Squadron got to change their name and paint jobs; why can't we?"

"Because they did so after a year of studious review, with a rational reason given for the use of runic decals from Runic Wars, rather than your desire to rename yourself as the "Black Demon Slayer Witch Squadron" with erotic pin-ups of the Nachthexen crews on the side so you, and I am quoting the official paperwork here," I spoke, looking at Li with an even gaze, putting every ounce of judgment I could into it; "Can "Pick up hot bitches while being sexy witches!"" A moment passed in silence after my retort, just long enough for me to think that, maybe, they realized why their request was denied.

"And?" One of the Pilots said, making me wish I still had that bottle of cheap vodka my aunt had sent me from Russia.

You must say the visit went rather well, though you had been concerned about the looks Mai was giving the newly manufactured Iron Tigers getting tested. Her mutterings about the cockpit dimensions being "just big enough for it to work" worried you greatly. On another note, you are pretty glad you cannot be put on cleaning duty; those cockpits look like a bitch and a half to clean after you and Mei had "a vigorous inspection" of the insides. But, putting that aside, you still had an informative time, getting into the loop of the newest developments, ideas being thrown around, and the various prototypes in action, and catching up with a few old friends. On that tone, you also were informed about news regarding an incident in a Metallurgical Lab and the conclusion of your IT testing.

[X] Metallurgical News
-[X] Incidental Star Blood Development Process

You are pretty unsure about the science behind this, but the "Star Blood Incident," as the engineers call it, was apparently a mistake in a lab leading to the creation of a new type of alloy you are currently unable to reproduce to scale. As you can understand, this "Star Blood Alloy" (no, the scientists won't change the name) is similar to current armor alloys in strength but weighing around 9-15% less. Which is good? Lighter armor is good, right? If you understand the techno-babble right, that type of chemical-metallurgical analysis of compou-whatever had never been your strength.

[X] Military Developments
-[X] Iron Tiger Formations

What was significantly easier to understand (thanks to Mai) was the finished findings of your testing of the Iron Tiger role and slot in your doctrine. The short and sweet of the whole thing can be boiled down to them being seen as a go-between of infantry and armor, used primarily as spearhead troops similar to armor. Though your theorists note that with improved technology, that stratagem can change, and they'll be eager to see how they can stay ahead of the global arms race that will follow the Iron Tigers' reveal.

(A good way of improving quality of life without needing to produce too many consumer goods is to implement a program where people can borrow more infrequently used goods from a central storehouse - things like vacuum cleaners, specialized cookware, hand tools, etc. The libraries can also double as social and entertainment spaces by including a television or radio, depending on the size of the library and the number of people served. These activities draw people to the library, increasing their familiarity.)

(The Fateful Seal is designed as a top-break gas-seal revolver, using the Webley and the Nagant M1895 for inspiration. Research shows that as much as 26% of propellant gas escapes through the barrel and cylinder gap. Like more or less all gas-seal revolvers, the FS uses the cartridge case to seal the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. It uses a 13.2x55mmSR cartridge; the flat nose boattail bullet is 13.2 millimeters wide and 15 millimeters tall. It has a level on the right side, like the Webley revolver, and is used for the same purpose. Additionally, with the proposed 4.7-inch to 12-inch long barrels, the FS uses a combination detachable shoulder stock and holster and a 6-or-7-round cylinder.)

(The CF is a dead-simple integral box magazine pistol taking inspiration from the Steyr Hahn, the FN 1903, the Browning Hi-Power, and the TT-33. The FN 1903 provided the CF with its general shape and appearance, the Steyr Hahn, its integral magazine and stripper clip guide, the Browning Hi-Power knowledge on double-stack magazines, and some more modern safety features, and last but not least, the TT-33 gave the CF knowledge on simplicity. Cambered in an 8x40mmSR cartridge, the CF is designed to be as simple as possible while safely chambering its integral 10-round box fed with stripper clips. The handgun is supposed to be so simple that anyone who can rifle the barrel should be able to make the rest of the pistol with hand tools.)
--[] Spook's Squeak (Agent Pistol)

The Swedish Mauser provided the PF with its general shape, appearance, and stripper clip guide, the Lee-Enfield it's magazine and sling mounts, and the Fateful Seal gave the PF the base for its unique 12 g under-barrel revolver shotgun. The PF is meant to be able to use 40mm rifle grenades such as HEAT, HE, and Smoke, with the under-barrel shotgun supposed to be primarily used for riot control in police use and rear line units. Chambered in the same 13.2x55mmSR cartridge as the Fateful Seal, the PF is fed from a 10-round detachable magazine with a 25-inch barrel length and a 40-inch overall length.)
--[] The Militia's Friend (Cheap SMG)
(The MF is a crude SMG taking inspiration from the Sten, PPS, Swedish m/45 SMG, MP 40, and MP 3008. The MF, just like the CF, is meant to be used not by the military but by the militia forces of Guangchou. The Swedish m/45 gave the MF its general shape and appearance; the MP 3008 gave the shoulder stock; the PPS, its knowledge of curved magazines; the MP 40, the safety features and sling mounts; and the Sten, its simplicity. With a fire rate of 570 rounds per minute, it is chambering the 8x40mmSR cartridge from a 20 to 30-round detachable box magazine or a 50-round drum with a 20-inch barrel and a 28-inch overall length. The MF is designed to be as simple as possible while still safely chambering its cartridge, and it's supposed to be so simple that anyone who can rifle the barrel should be able to make the rest of the "submachine" gun; using hand tools.)

(The SF is a relatively simple select-fire rifle taking inspiration from the AVS-36, the Fedorov Avtomat, the BAR, and the FG 42. It is meant to be used by professional forces, not police or militia. The BAR provided the SF with its general shape and appearance, the FG 42, the operational and gas system, the Fedorov Avtomat, the magazine, the dust cover, the AVS-36, and the muzzle brake and sling mounts. The SF has a fire rate of 406 to 610 rounds per minute, chambering the 6.5x57mmSR cartridge fed from a 20 or 25-round detachable box magazine while possessing a 28-inch barrel and a 40-inch overall length. The SF is designed to be a reasonably uncomplicated weapon yet modern and meant to be the main arm of the military while still being cheap to produce.)
--[] The Guard's Arm (Costly High-Magazine SMG)
(The GA is a costly high-quality submachine gun taking inspiration from the Browning Hi-Power, the MP 40, MP 5, and the Conscripts Friend and is meant to be used by the secret service and the guards of various military-industrial and laboratory installations. The conscripts friend gave the GA its general shape and appearance, the MP 5 its action, the MP 40 gave the detachable muzzle ring, and the Browning Hi-Power gave it the detachable double-stack magazine alongside modern safety features. The weapon possesses a fire rate of 457 to 800 rounds per minute chambered in a 6.5x30mmSR cartridge feeding from a 10 to 30-round detachable double-stack magazine or 48-round detachable double-stack drum. The GA is 457mm in length, not counting the detachable shoulder stock, and has a detachable muzzle ring that can be unscrewed to attach a suppressor.)

Formalizing a training program means institutionalizing the knowledge of your best agents (with a focus on industrial espionage in Japan) should go a long way toward delivering more reliable results. Of course, industrial espionage may not be as glamorous as the political and military games the CIA and KGB played. Still, it's easier and has a better long-term payoff for the nation. Furthermore, narrowing the focus to Japan due to proximity, an abundance of high-tech industry, and ease of letting your agents blend into the population allows us to get the most optimal results for the effort invested.)

(Gunagchow is an unholy combination of Chinese and Japanese, with enough loan words from Korean and Malay to make up a non-trivial portion of the overall syntax and more exceptions than English. And it's written with Hanzi characters that often don't match their Mandarin counterparts, and never mind that the grammar and word construction don't always line up. Even before the systematic destruction of the island's infrastructure by the IJN air raids, literacy in Guangchou was among the lowest in the Asia-Pacific - mainly because the language was simply a massive headache to learn. Before establishing a robust schooling system, we have a golden opportunity to correct this and grant the nation a competitive advantage in international relations in the future. Hua Guofeng gets a nice bribe to help quell rural unrest; we get food, win-win. Also, appeal to the CCP on ideological grounds by including a rider that part of the cost of the tractors must be paid for directly in food from the farms it's used on, going straight to the workers of the Omni-Tractor factories. This is a symbolic gesture against the alienation of the industrial mode of production and hopefully opens up a dialogue between the end users and the people making the tractors, improving international solidarity and giving the manufacturers valuable feedback.)

Using sympathetic and allied forces, we could smuggle arms, trainers, equipment, and supplies to identify and contact groups to bolster their strength and capabilities. Even if we fail to ensure a complete revolution, a coup ending with sympathetic forces leading the nation will benefit us in the denial of yet another region to exploit the West's lust for money.)

Ok, important question: how much of the plan's Concrete Promises have we fulfilled to date? Something I just want to be sure of as we are a year and a half away from the end of the period.

Here's our Five Year Plan Promises:
-[X] Concrete Promises:
--[X] Complete two units of electrification within the first year. Pretty sure we did this?
--[X] Complete Education Reform Well on target
--[X] Complete Airy Modernization & Deployment paging cyberenby?
--[X] Modernize Army Logistical Backbone I dunno.
--[X] Begin Deployment of Cybernetic Planning What? Someone else will know.
--[X] Establish diplomatic and trade ties with at least one non-aligned nation. Probably time to do this. Might be nice to reach out to Cuba too for healthcare people.
--[X] Begin the Dragon's Rail Just begin. One action. All we need. We can sneak one in somewhere.
--[X] Begin a housing Mega-Project. NO HOUSING MEGAPROJECTS HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE?

Ooh, Fluoridate the water supply just costs PO, we've got tons of that, if we can afford the action. Food for Tractors can buy CO and Rep with PO and we're swimming in PO.

Looking at The Spreadsheet, it looks like...wait, didn't we do our super-duper air thing last turn?

Pretty sure we have to court a country outside of the US/Russia/China spheres of influence, which pretty much means Western Europe, Africa and at a stretch, parts of Oceania.
