Super Robot Quest

But yeah, I envision the "Sea" unit as being a unit that fundamentally ignores terrain. Ideally some kind of hovercraft form with solid artillery and a zippy nature. Then a mission pack that lets it fight underwater foes, and a mission pack that doubles down on the artillery effect.

While the "Sky" Unit is intended as a platform for acquiring aerial superiority--controlling the skies for the cause of the Union. With a mission pack as a scout unit (The best stealth and sensors we can strap onto it) and a mission pack as a ground attack module.

Beowulf, as the "Earth" unit, is specialized for making optimal use of the terrain in the expected battlespaces, and has Mission Packs that specialize against particular threat vectors. Foxhound is all about threatening a large battlespace and keeping up with zippy bastards, while Timberwolf is a big brute who's geared to throw down against heavier enemy targets and beat them down before it falls itself.
What about a space unit?
Also can we call our super robot the Union Jack?

"Pilum status: nearing destruction."
I like how he suddenly calmed down.

Perhaps the hammy acting was just an expression of that joy. You could live with that.

Hey, don't question it. Also, not enough hammy action IMO!

"Captain Sasaki," you say with as straight a face as you can manage. Your old friends at the academy would never let you live this down. Well, screw 'em. This is your show. "Launch the Spark Caliber."

Spark Caliber doesn't sound as silly as say "GIGANTO CANNON!", so not valid.

The laser guidance and the micro-cables immediately latched into the open chamber of the Arc Cannon, even as the massive weapon on his right shoulder righted itself to accept the new package. The MMI was already handling most of the calculations for him, but even as he landed onto the ground with a resounding crash, he paid no attention to the bracing clamps extending from the Foxhound's legs. He just knew to take a stable stance for this next part.

Overkill! Someone also played Zone of the Enders.

Jupiter's Fury ready. Thunderstrike loaded.
"Thunderstrike!" he roared. "Fire!"

How did a rail cannon, a fancy magnet that shoots projectiles, become a lightning thrower?

The haze surrounding the Foxhound as it turned around, the explosion now the backdrop to its final victory over the Westphalian, served to only enhance the strange image of a victorious champion.

Well done! Too bad you forgot to time your victory pose with the explosion.
Anyway, right now we're halfway through the path towards Super Robot status. Beowulf is no longer a Real Robot, but he still has to fight he most ferocious foes ever existed to achieve his true potential as a Super Robot. The name of said puny foes are: The laws of physics, common sense, grimderp, muh realism and postmodernism.

Only once each and everyone one of these are destroyed will we have our own super robot.

*meekly points to the S-Gundam, the ExS-Gundam, the Deep Striker, and all of the Advance of Titans units*

If you want something more bullshit, there's always the RX-0 Unicorn. :p

More evidence that Gundams are actually midget super robots.

Result: New Defense Force Actions Unlocked

More dakka! Also, how many causalities for our side?

<Yet surprisingly, despite the thorough nature of its destruction via the Arc Cannon, enough of the Pilum's basic frame is intact. Mostly. Having gone over the wreckage, Lieutenant Wilde and Sergeant First Class Henry confirm that some of it is salvageable. This is an operation that will take significant time, however, and should not be expected in a timely manner...>

More tinkering for the win!

Like a flying Matryoshka doll with a lot of guns.

You mean drills.

But yeah, the Pilum's design as either a Mission Pack for the "Sea" unit (A Maximum Dakka model, if you will), or the Core Unit for the "Sky" unit seems pretty damn solid.

The Pilum could work for oversea battles, but for deep underwater fights we would benefit more from a submarine Core Unit, I think.

What about the "Space" unit?

So at what point are we going to turn our base into a Citybot?

The moment we discover our own plot rock.

Still need to punch a kaiju in the face, but that might take a bit, seeing as they are predominantly in the Pacific. The sheer size difference might make that a true Final Boss situation though. Especially if it brings battle riders/parasites to serve as mooks.

This will definitively happen at some point, all it needs to happen is for someone to sabotage not-Mazinger, or attack with multiple giant lizards at once.

As in, we need a battleship equivalent to base our mechs off when on remote deployment. Said battleship needs to be huge. It needs to fly. It needs to have armor that can shrug off any portable weapon. It needs enough interior space to hold and provide basic servicing for a crew of mechs and support vehicles. It needs All The Sensors.

You forgot to have drills for brutal charge attacks.

Are you describing a zeppelin here?

Having a submarine as a core unit of a transforming robot, and expecting this robot to recombine into a functioning submarine underwater... Let me just say that, if I had seen something like this in a show, I would not be able to take that robot (or the whole show) at all seriously after that.

Fear not! That's why the robot would deploy a force-field of *insert bullshit element of your choice here* to allow transformation unimpeded! Gaogaigar did it IIRC.

I better not talk about the bulky, giant robot ninja colored purple that transforms into a police car and is somehow the information gatherer specialist then...

Dukes of Gundam?

I'm making this analogy despite never watching neither a Gundam show, nor Dukes of Hazzard.

@Not in Person,

Think of a shonen anime tournament arc...that's the Earth sphere's sole method of regularly forming a new government.

The nations of the world all agree to the Gundam Fight Tournament. Every nation creates their own Gundam, trains a fighter to pilot it, and sends them all to basically conduct a giant robot kung-fu tournament to decide who gets to lead the Earth sphere for the next few years. At least until the next tournament.

Then they do it again!

The story starts very silly as you might guess, but later on it actually matures a fair bit. It still retains an utter sense of cheese, but it's a fun series to watch through.

The field was breached once or twice. Also, exactly and explicitly same field was used to immobilize monsters before finisher attack hit.

Yeah, one of the things I like about GaoGaiGar is that it actually provides explanations to some of the Super Robot Genre staples.

Like "Transformation isn't a free action, that's what the windstorm GaiGar generates when Final Fusion begins is meant to protect against."

a giant robot kung-fu tournament
I once came across a G Gundam/Ranma crossover. It had only three chapters, but left me wishing for more.

Now I wonder which, if any, of the power-ups available in this quest can give a robot kung-fu powers. Or result in a human, who's able to kung-fu the robots with his bare hands.

G Gundam did in fact have a few people who could beat the crap out of a Mobile Suit with their bare hands.

Typing up the update right now. Since you guys got a LOT of stuff from Galbinus, your Xenotech options are a...lot.

Well, that's fine, the whole thing was about long-term opportunities after all!

We don't need to exploit them all immediately. The only ones I'd say we should rush are anti-grav and either energy weapons or shard stuff (For power storage).

Anyway, I'm awake again and feeling a bit better than I was this morning. Bring on the turn!

G Gundam is one of few franchises I know where people actually beat crap out of mobile suits with their bare hands. I remembered name of a second one, then I forgot.

Schwarz Bruder of Neo-Germany, and Master Asia (UNDEFEATED OF THE EAST!) of Neo-Hong Kong.

Those two did not care if you attacked them in a Mobile Suit.

No, second franchise where people can make giant stompy robots to suddenly find different planes for the evening. I am confident that I saw at least one more, but I totally forgot what it is.
