What is the advantage of losing all that internal space?

The weight savings incurred would allow for more effective use of thrusters, and allow for quicker building times with material not needed for internal structures and outer hull plating. And no one said the hole had to be particularly large, especially on a ship that seems like it's aiming to be on the smaller side. Just present.

Personally I don't think it's worth the loss of pressurized volume. Time advances and being able to refit for larger equipment is important.

Well, at this point, I'm largely grasping at straws for hull-forms that are at least somewhat different from the usual hum-drum saucers and half saucers. It's a good look, I just want a little more variety, is all.

..I think a saucer is fine, tbh. We can stop experimenting with wacky concepts for the sake of variety. There's probably a reason why no ST ship uses *flying saucer shapes or torus shapes.

Well, what will come will come, but I think I've largely resigned myself to Starfleet sameiness at this point. My dreams of a diverse roster of ship designs don't really seem to match up with the reality of Star Trek. It's a fun quest, regardless.

Let's try the new thing. We did the station and learned some stuff, I'm interested to see what we can do here and what choices we get.
[X] Defense Satellite

[x] Defense Satellite

I think building a satellite will be interesting, and that stationary defences are a great way to ward off hostile neighbours without being particularly threatening.

I like both, but ultimately I think we need to put out more hulls using the new warp 8 engine so I'm gonna go for the biosciences ship. Something with enough teeth on it to be a deterrent and bulk out the fleet with a solid set of modules focused on its scientific specialty. Maybe a little bit of cargo space too.

[X] Biosciences Ship

"we need a light science cruiser dedicated to biological study and medical support"

*Slaps the roof of a Miranda*

"Best I can do is 200kt, three forward torpedoes, and a science score of 30 with over a dozen labs and four full decks of hospital space"

Huh I wonder what the Excalibur's refit looked like compared to the refit Connie

Also I'm not sure if anyone has read the Star Trek azure lane crossover where all starships weather they be federation or Klingon what have you have sentient computer ai intelligence that are cute and sometimes hot shipgirls. I'm wondering what an alternate timeline of that fic would be like with this universe I'm wondering how enterprise and this version of the enterprise first meeting would go down if the Connie enterprise met her Excalibur class shipgirl counterpart since she's more maneuverable and heavily armed than the Connie enterprise.....if they were shipgirls I mean

we can't really afford to neglect fighting ability across the fleet (even for ships that ideally should be behind the lines)
Important note: the specific role of the biosciences ship is not behind the lines. It's on the relatively vulnerable frontiers, where flag-planting colonies are being put down in maybe a little too much of a rush, before much is known about the planet in question.

On planets behind the lines, there's been enough time and population for them to have built their own local biosciences infrastructure and they don't need to depend on what can be squeezed into a ship.
