I mean, I swear Gabriel wouldn't care anyway? Isn't only disrespectful for the Norse to be hit by the butt end of a weapon? Well, we don't really know all that much about Christian culture, but I don't think it'd be that bad?

Honestly I think most people would get pretty pissed about being smacked in the face, Norse or not.

After all Norsemen are human too.

Yeah, but at that point I don't think it matters if you hit them with the butt-end of the weapon or the blade. Most people are gonna get angry if you hit them in the face. The reason why it's a shame-strike in Norse culture is because they don't see something like that as actually making use of the weapon, which is why stuff like hitting people with a hammer is also a shaming strike, because they don't view hammers as proper weapons either.

Hey Blackhand,

How fast are Finales? How do you stop them?
'Depends on the Finale. You stop them with another Finale of equal or greater power, eliminating the source — though that's not always able to stop it — or surrendering the battlefield.'

Alright, I'll call the voting in an hour and a half

@Imperial Fister Does he still have anti-status effect coating?A
Yes. It seems to be something to do with his armor
@Imperial Fister, I know we don't have a Glima for it, but can we grab him on a hug? Like a big bear hug?
You absolutely can. You don't need tricks to do things, for the record.
Clarification on this:
Deadman's got the right of it. I worded it weird, that's my bad there

  • [X] Plan Talking And Knockouts
-[X] Stoke Virthing and Saemd (+374 Orthstirr)
-[X] Burn a Calm Charge and stoke Frami again (+187 Orthstirr)
-[X] Invest 4 Orthstirr in Silver Tongue (-4 Orthstirr)
-[X] All attack attempts are intended to be nonlethal, and we are going to try and talk him down even as we fight.
    -[X] 60d6 Attack (60d6 tricks)
    -[X] 26d6 Defense (26d6 tricks)
    -[X] 0d6 Intercept
    -[X] Activate Slipstream (-16 Orthstirr)
-[X] Use Goal-Tell to try and make our arguments to talk him down more persuasive (-3 Orthstirr), and add Fight of Our Life x2 to the Silver-Tongue roll (26d6 total if there's only one...we'll add one use each to two different rolls if there are several) to talk him down
--[X] Try speaking in English, perhaps his native tongue will help?
-[X] Make 45d6+5 (w/Hugareida) Honed x12 Lightning-Charged Flashfire Cleave w/ Puncture (-28 Orthstirr), and up to two 30d6+5 (w/Hugareida) Orthstirr Enhanced x15 Lightning-Charged Stunner Slam Firebomb-Strikes w/Puncture (-39 Orthstirr each) intended to render him unconscious without killing him (and avoiding any shaming strikes)
-[X] Against his first attack release our Fast-held 3Fold Inertia-Arresting Throw enhanced with Orthstirr for +36 dice for a 60d6+9 defense (-45 Orthstirr) that should also trap him temporarily, hopefully giving us more time to talk him down.
-[X] Against his high powered sword attack, if it gets through our existing defenses, use a Contested Movement adding one use of Fight Of Our Life for additional dice (-3 Orthstirr, 14d6+5) with the counterattack being a Lightning-Charged Stunner Slam Firebomb Strike with Puncture added on (-24 Orthstirr) again avoiding shaming strikes, and if that fails use Focus Guard (-14 Orthstirr) if possible
-[X] Against his actual Finale get out of the way using a combination of Ember-Wing Cloak and Backstep enhanced with 4 Odr (-15 Orthstirr, -4 Odr) and if that doesn't work use one of the Sway defenses mentioned below (we have a 6th that we are saving for this).
-[X] By default use Sword Guard and Atgeir Bodyguard to defend against everything else. In response to anything that gets through them try and use Halting Vortex (-4 Orthstirr), and if something gets through that use up to five 60d6+9 Reinforcedx59 Sway defenses (-61 Orthstirr).
-[X] Tactics – So, the plan here is to continue using our very high Sword Guard and Atgeir Bodyguard to defend as much as possible, but with a lot of alternate defensive options layered on, and try and talk Gabriel down while beating him unconscious if he doesn't listen.

    [X] Plan Gentle Persuasion

    -[X] General
    -[X] Maintain Slipstream (-16 Orthstirr)
    -[X] Ember-Winged Cloak (-6 Orthstirr)
-[X] Maintain Stoker State Stage 2 (-6 Orthstirr)
-[X] Stoke our Virthing and Saemd (+187 Orthstirr)
-[X] Invest 4 Orthstirr in Silver Tongue (-4 Orthstirr)
-[X] Burn a Calm Charge, and keep an Aspect in reserve to immediately heal if we get hurt.
    -[X] Defence
    -[X] 4d6 Defense
-[X] Maintain and repair damage on our 50d6+9 Atgeir Bodyguard (-? Orthstirr)
-[X] Maintain and repair damage on our 50d6+9 Sword Guard (-? Orthstirr)
-[X] Use up to four 40d6 Reinforced Sway (1d6, +5d6, 36 Orthstirr) to dodge in an emergency.
    -[X] Attack
    -[X] 82d6 Attack
    -[X] Step 1: Armour Penetration
--[X] Penetrate his armour for the round with a 50d6+4 Sharpened Honed Lightning-Charged Flashfire Cleave with Puncture (25d6, -31 Orthstirr)
    -[X] Step 2: Knee-Groin-Trick
--[X] If we can launch it as a straight attack, then use:
    --[X] 63d6+4 Honed Knee-Groin-Trick using Puncture (29d6, 4 Bonus Dice, -31 Orthstirr)
--[X] If he's about to launch his finale, then we use Contested Movement with Fight of Your Life, and then deliver our Knee-Groin-Trick with Puncture as our counter.
    -[X] Step 3: Talk-No-Jutsu
--[X] Whilst his eyes are still watering and the pain has hopefully snapped him out of it a bit, use Eyetalking and Silver-Tongue with x2 Charges of Fight of Your Life to try and get through to him and remind him that we're his friend.
--[X] If any of our Seidr is applicable to this situation, then use that too.
--[X] If this does not work, then use up to four 36d6 Honed Stunner Slam with Puncture (7d6, 4 Bonus d6, 33 Orthstirr) to try and incapacitate him without killing him, using the butt of Sagaseeker or whatever is convenient and to hand.

Y'know, come to think of it... while dodging backwards might not feasibly get you out of range of a Finale, I wonder how often dodging forwards is a viable answer, aiming to get behind the Finale-user while they're stuck finagling the Finale.

You absolutely can. You don't need tricks to do things, for the record.

Just to be clear: Could we put, like 20 or 30 dice towards it without a Trick? Because my impression was that while we could 100% grapple people without a Trick, it'd be a Basic Attack (and, as an unarmed one, one we couldn't use Hone or Sharpen on) and there'd thus be some issues actually landing it on someone like Gabriel.

Hey @Imperial Fister around how strong* does someone generally have to be to make it into Valhalla? And can people who aren't that strong get in? For instance can someone who's under that level get in if they go down like a badass?
What Odin is looking for isn't the power of a person, but the potential they have.

Absolutely. You can't put orthstirr towards it without a trick, but you can put more dice.

Glima is a Martial Style, even if it's a weird one...

Check. So Glima only. That's good to know and we can make use of that in future.

I need to make some corrections to the sheet

Interesting! I wonder if that means we can get the Grapple skill? I was sort of assuming Glima covered it, but if it's an actual Style and moved to that section...

Fun Fact, Gabriel has burnt a full turn's worth of cultivation on this one fight so far

Ooof. That's unfortunate.

God I hope it wasn't fucked up, but I couldn't really think of anything better anyway.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried here as well. As far as I can tell the worst likely outcome is just us knocking him out but not actually resolving the problem or getting at the root causes, but there's all the unlikely outcomes as well, to say nothing of intervening variable we're unaware of.

I'm concerned.

I can practically hear the salt and tears from GabrielQuest right now...

Man, it's a shame that this happened. I'd thought Gabriel had dealt with whatever was troubling him after his talk with Jerasmus, and I think it did, but from what I can tell we happened to dredge up even older wounds? Guy could use some R&R, and a talk as well.

I kind of want to do a Gabrielquest thing too, but I'm absolute garbage at Negaverse quests.

But yeah, Gabriel is our buddy, I hope we can help him work through this.

Is this a result of Gabriel's version of Bloodlust or Gabrielquest just Really wanting whatever shinies they get from winning.

Nah, per what IF put in the post, doing this is damaging Gabriel's cultivation (specifically, this is likely a Sin) and likely a result of advancing too fast without taking time to stabilize. GabrielQuest are going 'Oh shit, we failed our Composure roll and now we're freaking out here!'

Huh? I thought Imperial meant he had burned through a full turn's worth of cultivation, as in Zeal gained during a turn.

Awesome! Okay, well time to rewrite my plan around the idea of turning the other cheek, where we try and dodge his attacks then grab him in a bear hug so we can get through to-

It sounds like he's dealing with Always Being Second. Never quite good enough. He wasn't quite good enough to beat the other squires in sparring. He wasn't quite good enough to save his master. He wasn't quite good enough to win Halla's affection. He wasn't quite good enough to fight off the trollmen. And even with every advancement he's made, all the bitter work he's put into cultivation, he still Isn't Quite Good Enough to win this spar.

I think this is a large part of what's going on, yeah. I don't think it's the only factor at work, but it's certainly one of the most prominent.
