    -[X] Summon a 50d6+8 Sword Guard (19d6, 1 Bonus Die, -43 Orthstirr)
-[X] If both our guards get taken down, against average-looking attacks, start using up to four:
-[X] 42d6 Reinforced x28 Honed x7 Slice-Aside Tricks (1d6, + 5 Bonus Dice, -49 Orthstirr per use), with our riposte being one of the Basic Attacks below.

    -[X] Counter-Attack
-[X] Respond to any particularly scary-looking attacks with Contested Movement, first using our Stoked Dice as a bonus, and Fight of Your Life thereafter, with our counter-attack being another Sharpened Lightning-Charged Flashfire Cleave with Puncture (-24 Orthstirr)
--[X] Try and use this counter-attack at least twice, even if he does not throw any particularly scary-looking attacks.
    [X] Plan: Like a Book
    -[X] Stoke Frami (+187 Orthstirr)
    -[X] 36d6 Attack
    -[X] 50d6 Defense

-[X] Maintain Stoker State Stage 2 (-6 Orthstirr)
    -[X] Prepare a Atgeir Bodyguard (20 + 1 (Hugareida) + 31 (Extra Orthstirr): Total 52d6 + 4 (Frenzy) ) (45 Orthstirr)
-[X] Activate Slipstream (-16 Orthstirr) immediately and use Ember-Wing Cloak (-6 Orthstirr) as necessary to control distance
-[X] Use up to (6) 10x Honed, Lightning-Charged Basic Attacks (1d6 + 10d6 (Hone) + 4 (Frenzy): Total 11d6 +4) (Total of 66 Orthstirr ), each enhanced with a follow-up 3x Sharpened Sword Strike (66 Orthstirr Total for the extra attacks, not sure if this just mirrors the die investment or not, but it'll be at least 7d6 between the Sharpens and the Hugareida Bonus), once Gabriel runs out of Defenses, release our Stoked Pool with a Sharpened, Lightning-Charged Stoking Strike with Puncture (17 Orthstirr, Stoked Pool + 2d6 + 4 (Frenzy)) and use up to 4 Lightning-Charged Firebomb Strikes unless he yields or disengages by this point (9d6 + 7d6 (Extra Orthstirr) + 1d6 (Hugareida) + 4 (Frenzy): Total of 17d6 + 4) (11 Orthstirr Each)
-[X] After the Atgeir Bodyguard is overcome, react to the incoming attack using Contested Movement, augmented with Fight Of Your Life (3 Orthstirr for 14d6 + 4 (Frenzy) and a Sharpened, Lightning Enhanced Flashfire Cleave with Puncture as our retaliation (16 Orthstirr Total), from there, commit up to 3 Honed, Reinforced Slice-Aside Tricks (10d6 + 9d6 (Hone) + 21d6 (Reinforce) + 4 (Frenzy) + 4 (Armor): Total of 40d6 + 8 for 38 Orthstirr each), to continue ablating his defenses down and hopefully create our opening. Disengage using EWC if all remaining defenses are exhausted to try to Round Break
-[X] Tactics – Use Slipstream and a powerful Atgeir Bodyguard, and then punish his overcompensation towards offense by trying to overwhelm his defenses with a series of fast attacks, while building up heat for a powerful exploit once an opening is made. Maintain pressure to hopefully deny him from any slow moving techniques and discourage him from recovering his Focus. Stay on the move.
    [X] Plan Counterattacks
    -[X] Stoke Frami
    -[X] 42d6 Attack (36d6 tricks)
    -[X] 44d6 Defense (44d6 tricks)
    -[X] 0d6 Intercept
-[X] Activate Stoker State Stage 2 (-6 Orthstirr)
    -[X] Put up a 50d6+8 (w/Hugareida) Orthstirr-Enhancedx30 Atgeir Bodyguard (-44 Orthstirr) and a 50d6+8 (w/Hugareida) Orthstirr-Enhancedx30 Sword Guard (-40 Orthstirr)
-[X] Activate Slipstream (-16 Orthstirr) immediately and use Ember-Wing Cloak (-6 Orthstirr) as necessary to stay right on Gabriel.
-[X] Make a 42d6+4 (w/Hugareida) Sharpened x4 Lightning-Charged Flashfire Cleave attack using Puncture (-20 Orthstirr), followed by six 7d6+5 Honedx6 Lightning-Charged Basic Attacks (-7 Orthstirr each), then one 45d6+5 (w/Hugareida) Orthstirr-Enhanced x41 Sparkbomb using Puncture and adding all accumulated Stoker Dice (-65 Orthstirr) as long as we're sure it won't kill him
-[X] For our first defense use Contested Movement enhanced with the use of our Stoker State dice (-3 Orthstirr, 21d6+4) using a Sharpened Lightning-Enhanced Flashfire Cleave w/Puncture as our counterattack (-17 Orthstirr), for our next three use Contested Movement with one use each of Fight Of Our Life (-3 Orthstirr and 14d6+4 each) and use Lightning-Enhanced Firebomb-Strikes w/Puncture (-12 Orthstirr each) as our counters for those. If those defenses fail, fall back on Focus Guard if we can (-14 Orthstirr) or Sidestep if we're moving too much for that (-2 Orthstirr).
-[X] When not using Contested Movement, by default use Atgeir Bodyguard and then Sword Guard to defend against everything. In response to anything that gets through both of those use up to six 42d6+8 Honed x6 Reinforced x35 Hefty-Halter Chop defenses (-44 Orthstirr each), and if something gets through that use Halting Vortex (-4 Orthstirr) and see if it helps.
-[X] Tactics – Layer some defenses and then aggressively advance with Flashfire Cleave again and use some probing attacks while responding to his own attacks with boosted Contested Movement uses for savage counters, then, if he somehow weathers all that unscathed, hit him with a huge Sparkbomb at point blank range.
[X] What's up with the black fire?
[X] "So, the way we normally train is by refining our control of the Body( Hamr) , acuity of the Mind( Hugr) , and those with strong sensitivity or the right opportunities can embody their Spirit( Fylgja) , I'm curious what you call your own focuses in those fields."

@Imperial Fister Since both questions are tied, do we get to ask both?

I mean. If we went for a equivalent build where we put in 90% of our training dice, actions and Fylgja Evolutions towards (and only) Getting Good at combat. We would be hell of a lot more stronger for sure. If way less flexible (no Seidr, probably dog/wolf/bear for Fylgja, forget about crafting skills, etc).

Oh, and knowing exactly what to do for Internal Cultivation of course. Mustn't forget that.

I've noted before, but this wouldn't help us personally as much as it looks like at first glance. It'd get us about 20-ish additional combat dice...but it would also cost us 7 at the moment due to having a worse main weapon, and, in the long run, would cost us more than 20 in lower weapon quality. So we'd be breaking even at best. This is obviously less true if we kept the crafting skills only, but it's worth noting.

That, of course, matters little for Squires and Knights who have people to make their armor and weapons for them.

With my plan pretty far behind given the number of voters and the other two tied, I've added an approval vote for Defence In Depth to avoid said tie, though both look workable.

My issue at hand is that Defense in Depth relies entirely on "Gabriel sits on his hands and waits while we slowly chip him down" There's an assumption that he has a Persistent Defense that's really powerful (When we've seen no signs that he has anything like that, and our only example of someone who could just forcibly dispel a Persistent Defense was Steinarr, a half-step Hero Tier), and aside from counter abuse (Which he can nullify by just disengaging and forcing a Round Break), it has nothing outside of the Flashfire Cleave, which it counts on beating him--despite the fact that Gabriel seems to have focused on a small number of extremely powerful defenses to counteract Halla's tendency to focus on big sweeping strikes. It's trying to brute force through his massive dice pool by throwing more Orthstirr and dice at it, which seems like the wrong way to win, since it's trying to beat him at his own game.

Except Chivalrics already have one of the most busted persistent defenses in the game. Just a passive, zero cost "Something needs to invest X amount of magical resources to even be allowed to roll to attack me". But we've already beaten that by identifying his exact Rebuke level and tailoring our attacks to do so.

More importantly, it assumes we'll be able to resolve 'Nine Attacks' before the Round Break happens.

The focus behind my plan is to maximize the amount of individual attacks that happen in the smallest period of time possible--since he's overcommitted on his defenses (And we know he's doing so based on our Tactics rolls), we can infer that he's mostly specced against Halla's usual standby of only attacking a small handful of times but stacking a lot of damage and pain into them. We also know he's pivoting into a powerful offensive stance right now as well.

Defense in Depth isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it tries to wrestle Gabriel in his own area of expertise. My plan is trying to change up our approach and punish him for overcommitting onto a small number of heavily stacked defenses in order to reduce his defenses to zero before going forward on damage. Thus my use of Sword Strikes instead of Sword Guards, so that each of our swings knocks down two defenses instead of 1, and Slice-Asides once our persistent is broken to further run him down.

More importantly, it assumes we'll be able to resolve 'Nine Attacks' before the Round Break happens.

Eh. It has an initial attack and 2-4 Contested Movement usages that are likely to happen pretty early, especially if he pulls out any big guns (which is likely). That's actually a fairly hefty amount of offense all on its own. The Basic Attacks are nice after that but not needed for the plan to be effective if those go off.

Defense in Depth isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it tries to wrestle Gabriel in his own area of expertise.

Only for a single attack. The Contested Movements don't rely on doing that at all. Nor, obviously, do the Basic Attacks.

I'm referring more to spamming Contested Movement, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't have a countermeasure for that at this point. It's one of Halla's clutch tricks, and we've already hit him with it in this fight alone.

We hit him with it and lost the contest, that's not the sort of thing that makes one really paranoid about being hit with it again, since it failed. He demonstrated nothing to make winning it easier except maybe having a higher number on that roll than us...which is probably not enough as compared to +7 dice, to say nothing of as compared to +14 dice like it will be on the first roll.

Assuming he has a counter to this that he'll use is a pretty huge assumption with no actual evidence backing it. It's not impossible, but it's not the way to bet either.

It's just as much of a huge assumption to presume he'll whip a Persistent Defense out this turn (Despite our gigantic Tactics Success saying he's actually focusing mostly on offense this turn) and build a major cornerstone of your plan around countering that hypothetical.

But I mean, I've made my points, if people disagree with them, then so be it. Just have to hope your reads were on the ball.

I do agree that's pretty unlikely. I think Defence In Depth works well even if that's not the case, however.

I do feel that just constantly spamming the same trick won't necessarily lead to good results, even if it's Mathematically Optimal and Does The Most Damage.

It also leads to kind of a boring fight, to just abuse the same trick over and over again and assuming the other guy can't counter it.

Alright, voting is now closed

Very gracious of you

Eh, I made my feelings clear, but there's ultimately no beating the "This is the Optimal Combination and there is No Countermeasure to it" argument until it actually backfires. (I wonder what happens if he just pops Zeal to Just Succeed at the Contested Movement, and we get smashed with said Scary Move with no real recourse because we were entirely dependent on Contested Movement as our primary defense line)

At least losing is helpful too if life isn't on the line. I just wish it came because we were outplayed rather than because people got too hyped up with One Weird Trick.

Of course, I'm perfectly willing to be happy if it turns out that I was doomsaying, I do want to win, I just feel that there's No Such Thing as an Unbeatable Combination, and I feel the winning plan here is too dependent on the apparent inviolability of Contested Movement.

There are definitely ways to beat Contested Movement. If Gabriel had a reflexive one he could always use, I feel like he'd have done so last turn, and if he had one he needs to plan on, I don't think last turn's showing on our part would make him pull it out.

Like, Puncture certainly exists, but not everyone has it and so if you have good evidence that someone doesn't have it at all, or at least aren't intending to use it if they do, assuming they both have and will use it is weird. This is like that, but in regards to anti-Contested Movement tech, which is gonna be rarer than Puncture anyway as it's a rarer category of effect.

Probably:
Halla gets smashed by the Scary Move, the two have a laugh and post battle chat, we get a bonus to training dice next turn.

Hey, I'm perfectly fine losing thanks to that Muna, I just don't want to lose on purpose.

And even if you're going to lose, being willing to stretch your potential is a good way to level stuff up. Gale needs more love.

If our Contested Movement turns out not to work, then that would be quite bad, no lie, but we've seen what he does in response to a Contested Movement and it wasn't pulling out some novel Trick Defence. We'd fall back to using Slice-Aside, and we're still hitting him with a bunch of Basic Attacks and a Flashfire Cleave, so it's not a total loss.

About the only thing I might have added in was adding Firebomb-Strikes to the Basic Attacks we're throwing with our Slice-Asides, since that's something I just remembered we could do after I asked Fister during the Steinarr spar. But c'est la vie.

With my plan pretty far behind given the number of voters and the other two tied, I've added an approval vote for Defence In Depth to avoid said tie, though both look workable.

Thanks man.

Also yeah I'd echo that I think basically every plan was solid, and there's certainly like, conceivable circumstances where PDiD is worse than PLaB depending on stuff we don't know. Our rough judgement here was that it's more likely that layered prioritised defence is helpful than not, but we could be wrong, and @Alectai, you are 100% forgiven in advance for pointing and laughing if it turns out we were.

I do agree with this entirely, all plans were definitely solid.

[X] Plan Defence in Depth
Give Skippy a chance!

Bad News: The vote if over.
Good News: This plan did, in fact, win.

Yeah, at the end of the day, no hard feelings, I just trend towards wanting to Try New Things out as a rule and trying to exploit perceived openings, sometimes it pays off massively, sometimes it doesn't. As long as we don't completely embarass ourselves, the outcome is fine either way.

oh well, worth a shot.

Just a reminder, Gabriel activated anti-status effect skills. IAT, for example will not work.
Contested movement.... its all on Halla, so it should NOT be affected by that, but we will see.
Still find it funny he activated that when he knows we do not deal with those abilities. :V
But then, i guess he expect more flashes from Black Flame Sparrowflight and Sageseeker clashes.

It would be pretty surprising if we actually managed to get to the end of a round from both characters actually using up all their actions. That basically doesn't happen in this system.

It could happen in a straightforward fight if both people focus a lot more on defense than offense (ie: both people get through all their attacks without hitting the opponent at all, or at least without hitting them hard enough to cause a round end for some reason), but it's certainly unusual.
