I spotted another minor character sheet error, we never got our extra Capacity from hitting Hugr 6 listed. It should be 14 now. This won't matter for a while, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
.
.
.
Relatedly, and just as a benchmark, we're already starting to hit enough capacity that random warriors would be close to maxed out (random warriors of 20 have Hugr 4-6 and probably Wordplay at 2 but not usually 4), and thus have personal Capacity 5-7 or so. When our new Hugareida trick kicks in we'll have 5 Capacity filled...and be nowhere close to being done. We are gonna have so much magic compared to most other people.
Heck, even really powerful people of 30+ are gonna usually have Capacity of 9-10 or so at most...maybe a little higher if they're Hugr focused, but we're already past that. Now, a Fylgja's Capacity is also relevant here, and adding that in most people are a bit better off comparatively if they have said fylgja manifested, but that's a big if in many cases and we also have a fylgja...with Fylgja 4 we'll have a total available capacity of 18 (14 in us and 4 in the fylgja) which is absurd. Obviously this ignores other people with Owl fylgja, but it's still a good thing to keep in mind when dealing with most others.
That's apropos of nothing, I admit, just something I noted and thought worth mentioning so we have a better idea of what kind of Capacity most people have. The only missing piece of the puzzle is how common having a fully realized fylgja is. It's clearly not ubiquitous, but exactly how common is much less clear.
Hallr strongly implied that something major happened at Fylgja 4, yeah. That said, getting to Fylgja 4 is cheap and easy enough that I suspect most people who have theirs awakened hit that point eventually, so in terms of benchmarks the relevant thing seems to me to be how many people that really is, as a percentage of the population.
Of the roughly 80–100 people that live in Asvir and the Hading Valley in general, about 7 have manifested fylgjur. Of the population of Norway at large, about 5–8% will have their fylgja realized.

That's great to know and gives a good idea of what kind of people are likely to have one, yeah. This also means any individual fylgja is probably gonna be held by like, 1% of the population at best, which is also useful info.
Something that I think a lot of people are getting confused on is that fylgjur are not separate entities to humans. They are you, they are expressions of your very soul. If you have a muna readied then so too does your fylgja. If your fylgja has a muna readied than so too do you.
The real danger I think is how heavily it's been hammered in that Fylgja are as much a liability as they are an asset, and they're an easier target than you are, apparently. It's tricky to tactically use your spirit animal if that opens you up to getting alpha struck to death instantly.

Yeah. Still, a flying entity opens up a lot of options - even just dropping a rock from a decent height could do some damage or be distracting. Or if we get something more offensive, throwing fireballs or lightning bolts. That's leaving aside the scouting and messenger oriented stuff, like sharing senses or speaking through our fylgja's mouth, that we could probably develop. Probably good to wait till rating 4, though.

I that case, we do eventually want to put some Hugareida in our fylgja, but we need a separate defensive one for it for that to be really viable, and then an offensive one for it to be useful. I don't think we're there yet.

They're easier only inasmuch as they don't really have armor and Fylgja tends to be lower than Hamr so their endurance is very meh, I think. Like, they're not supernaturally easy to harm, but if we're wearing a Good Gambeson and have Hamr 5, we have 13 effective Endurance while our Fylgja (assuming it's hit level 4) has only 4. That's a significantly more vulnerable target, even if it can fly, and only increases once we get mail (it's also an even bigger difference for someone with a shield).
We could, but then we can't use it ourselves which seems like not a great plan, IMO...depending on how it works, anyway. We really need a separate defensive trick for our fylgja before this becomes a good call, and I think this probably isn't it.

You hit the ground again and again, each strike takes you a little bit deeper than the last.
(+1 to Leaping-Cleave Trick.)

Halting Vortex spins half-an-inch above your palm. A trickle of sweat beads down your brow as you feed orthstirr into the power-hungry trick.
It's expensive, yes, but it'll stop a trick or attack just as well as if not better than any shield.

"What's wrong with it?" You ask Blackhand as you kneel beside your sleeping fylgja. Not a single time in the many years since you manifested your fylgja have you seen the owl sleep.
'It's remaking itself,' says Blackhand as he continues to explain nothing. You tell him just that and he grumbles. 'Which means that soon, your fylgja will be something better than a simple owl, something of a far grander existence.'
You quirk a brow. "Like what?"
'Your friend Aki's raven is no ordinary raven, as I'm sure you are well aware.' Well, it certainly is rather large... 'It is now a Battle-Raven, which means that it is not only blessed with formidable strength, but also talons and feathers sharper than iron and tougher than stone.'
You blink, thoughts calling back to gouges left in wood and clinking feathers. "That... does make sense. Is that what's happening with my owl?"
'Potentially, though it is never certain what you'll end up with.' Blackhand pauses, as if considering a thought. 'However, you can direct the process towards a preferable result, should you desire it.'
"Why not?" You shrug and ask that he please do. He obliges and shares the secrets with you.
Focusing your orthstirr inwards, you feel five distinct possibilities for your owl.
Which do you direct your owl towards?
[ ] Learning-Owl
-Boon: Spirit of the Owl will change to Spirit of the Learning-Owl. It will keep old effects while granting new ones.
-Boon: Spirit of the Learning-Owl - Extra dice equal to the fylgja rank will be randomly added to training rolls.
-Flaw: One-Eye's Obsession - You will have great difficulty resisting the call of knowledge, even at great detriment to yourself and others.
[ ] Shield-Owl
-Boon: Spirit of the Owl will change to Spirit of the Shield-Owl. It will keep old effects while granting new ones.
-Boon: Spirit of the Shield-Owl - Your owl will always have an extra shield, even if all its capacity is taken up. It will use this shield to defend itself if attacked.
-Flaw: Call of the Martyr - If you fail an intercept, you will use either your own body or your fylgja as a shield , whichever has more Endurance at the time.
[ ] Travelling-Owl
-Boon: Spirit of the Owl will change to Spirit of the Travelling-Owl. It will keep old effects while granting new ones.
-Boon: Spirit of the Travelling-Owl - Your owl will bring you news from lands both near and far.
-Flaw: Travelling Spirit - You struggle to stay in one place for very long and will find your focus flagging if you do. Stacks with Wanderlust.
[ ] Wizard-Owl
-Boon: Spirit of the Owl will change to Spirit of the Wizard-Owl. It will keep old effects while granting new ones.
-Boon: Spirit of the Wizard-Owl - Occasionally brings you magic spells and recipes.
-Flaw: Shortsighted - Long nights spent studying magic has resulted in you having great difficulty in seeing clearly past a few dozen feet. Does not affect your fylgja's vision.
[ ] Trick-Owl
-Boon: Spirit of the Owl will change to Spirit of the Trick-Owl. It will keep old effects while granting new ones.
-Boon: Spirit of the Trick-Owl - Halves the cost of tricks put into it, rounding down. Does not apply to Cost 1 tricks.
-Flaw: Ineffective Basics - Your basic attacks, defenses, and intercepts are no longer effective. You must now rely on tricks in combat.

"How is he?" Neither you nor Abjorn need to say who 'he' is, so often your mind turns to Stigandr.
"He seemed..." Abjorn pauses, brows furrowed as he tried to think of the words. "Distracted, when I spoke to him. Like something was speaking, something I couldn't hear."
You nod along, in complete agreement. "That's exactly how it seemed to me, too." A heavy frown creases its way across your face. "Do you think that... that he might have nidheart?"
Abjorn shudders. "I hope not, because if so... there's nothing we can do to help him."
'I remember that there are some techniques that can be done to help Stigandr, if that is the case, but I cannot remember what they are... Speak with Solrun, the Seeress, to see if she knows more.' Blackhand helpfully supplies.
You nod, both to Abjorn and Blackhand. "I hope so too, yet... We're not reaching him, neither of us are."
You slip your hand into Abjorn's and he gives it a squeeze.

0~0~0 Looking at the Armor (Hugr (Armorcraft): 2, 4, 2, 2, 6, 3, 2, 5, 1, 2, 5) 2 Successes
Cracking open the chest containing the armor, you're met with....
Well, it's rather bland.
When you first laid eyes on it, all you saw was how expensive it must have been. Now, though, you see it for what it is.
An ugly bunch of iron plates stacked on top of mail. Where is the silver? Where is the art?
The only thing really impressive is how much- Wait a second.
You frown as your finger brushes against an inscription. Flipping the plate around, you discover that it's only the outside of the armor that's bland and ugly. The inside of the armor is covered top to bottom in infinitely tiny inscriptions of a long, flowing tongue. It reminds you of English, though only distantly.
'Latin, the tongue of the Christian Clergy.' Blackhand answers that question with lived experience. 'I could read it, once, but that time has long since passed.'
"That's my armor." A youthful, rarely heard voice calls to you.
You turn and lay eyes on the thrall Gabriel. He stands before you, a slight glare in his gaze and the shackles on his wrists. His blonde hair is far shorter now than when he'd arrived — such is the custom of keeping thralls.
"It was your armor," he scowls despite your helpful correction. "Now it's dad's."
"So? He can't use Knightly Armor." His voice hitches as he says 'Knightly'.
"What even is a 'Knight', anyways?" You stop Blackhand from answering, wanting to hear Gabriel's answer first.
Gabriel pauses, candle burning behind his eyes. Every word he speaks is carefully chosen. "A Knight is a virtuous man who answers God's call to the path of the warrior."
You squint. That's barely anything to go off of! …And it looks like he knows that, too. He's a smart one, this Gabriel.
"Can't be very good at it if dad made off with this," you tap the armor as Gabriel bristles. His hand curls into a fist and shakes at his side.
"Lord Highwater was a good man!" Gabriel growls, fire in his eyes.
'Good, it's always tragic to see warrior spirits be broken. Let's see how far his pride will take him.'
"And then he died to a better man."
Your curiosity is getting the better of you, but you just can't help yourself. What exactly does he think he could do with those shackles on his wrist? He doesn't-
Your head snaps to the side, mind reeling at the speed. It's only as you taste iron that you realize what just happened, that Gabriel hit you.
A Thrall hit his Master's Daughter.
You pierce the frozen boy with a deadly glare and go to open your mouth, only to find your vision filled with brown cloth as it falls to the floor.
Jerasmus keeps his head pressed to the ground, hands held flat against the floor as he tries to placate you. "Please, Young Lady, let the poor Squire live. He isn't familiar with your customs, he knows not the gravity of what he just did."
Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse... but you did egg him on.

AN: Deciding to spar with Gabriel will put this plan on pause. You'll have a chance to reassess after the spar.
Learning Owl or Shield-Owl seem the best to me. Trick-Owl's side-effects seem crippling. Alternatively, Wizard-Owl could be really good, considering our only trainer for magic is locked behind a currently nigh-impossible quest. A potion or spell for dealing with poison might be our only way of surviving the upcoming boss fight, depending on how nasty poison is in this setting.
Edit: Let's spar. Fighting people from other traditions is a goldmine for experience (not necessarily mechanically, but conceptually) and it fits our Bloodthirsty nature.
Those were some pretty mediocre rolls for the most part.
I see no reason to kill Gabriel, considering we did provoke him. A spar would be cool, I guess, but honestly I wouldn't mind any option as long as it isn't the one where he's permanently removed.
As for the owl, Learning Owl seems to be the best. Wizard Owl seems pretty good too, but considering we're going a warrior/mage hybrid build, having short-sightedness seems like a bad idea. I'd rather not want to rely on our fylgja for vision when in battle.
Hmm, letting it go... Yeah, that's not going to fly, he broke the rules, ignoring that is Nid on our part, not cool, a proper Norse doesn't allow a blow to themselves to go unchallenged. On the other hand, the other guy did beg us.
And this was why I wanted to link the actions, yeesh. Also, the Dice Gods have just been awful this turn.
So yeah, "You hit me, I hit you back" is kind of the only way to resolve this without eating some nid or having the kid killed I think. It responds to the action without actually going to extremes. But absolutely don't Let It Go, because that's absolutely nid on our part. It implies someone can strike us unpunished.
As for the other options... My gut says Wizard-Owl. Short-sightedness isn't the end of the world given how we're a close range fighter to begin with, and long range is mostly covered by our Owl, and more importantly, this gives us an avenue to trickle in some magic without need to beg, borrow, or steal it. That this also is a path to megane is just bonus! Bonus!
[ ] Tell Steinarr (Removes Gabriel Permanently, Ruins Jerasmus' Relationship with you)
[ ] If he hit you... then you want to hit him back. (Spar with Gabriel)
[ ] Let it go (Improves Relation with Gabriel)
Anyway, this is Norse Nanoha, we're at stage "Body Language taken to the Extreme", this safely avoids nid but doesn't allow this to go unpunished, because Halla is a beast in a fight for her age.
Yeah, those rolls were...actually just pretty awful, all things considered. The roll to complete Imaging especially.
For choices, definitely Learning Owl or Shield Owl. The downsides of the others are legitimately not something we can deal with, and the benefits are good.
I was planning on sparring with Gabriel anyway, so I'm gonna say we go for that. Actually, @Imperial Fister is that a mandatory action or a free action or what? Like, if we vote for that should we put it in our plan for the next turn, or is it just automatic?
For plan, well, it depends on whether we need to spend an action on that spar, but either way we need to visit Asvir (to go shopping and talk to the seeress).
Actually, @Imperial Fister is that a mandatory action or a free action or what? Like, if we vote for that should we put it in our plan for the next turn, or is it just automatic?
Voting for Gabriel spar via plan will have you spar with him in Winter 4/Turn 1 while voting to spar with him as punishment will have the spar be in Summer 4/Turn 3
