I'll call voting in an hour-and-a-half, so get your votes in if you haven't!

You have to remember that the list as is is hardly exhaustive and that Imperial is working on the mechanics as we play it.
I'm intending for this list to be the basic framework that can be added to if/when things come up. This first life is for both you and me, you to get an understanding of the setting and mechanics and for me to work out the kinks in both.

Hmm should we focus on housecraft/Blacksmithing to actually get that boon/a non combat skill to a decent level? One that actually has use other than Poetry for Orthsir I mean

I think we can wait until we get Weaponcraft (which most people have) and focus on that to get the boon instead. That'll be a more useful and notable skill. It puts off getting the boon, but that seems a worthwhile trade.

when was it said everyone has weapon craft? or is it the axe making? because those fall into tool iirc.
Edit: I mean the wood chopping axes
Housecraft
This skill governs the creation of tools and other household items.
-Tool Trick (Unlocks ability to create wood axes, work knives, and scythes, amongst other things)

Everyone (every Norseman, that is) knows how to put a wood axe and a work knife together. In a pinch, both can be used as weapons.

'Born with Hammer in Hand' isn't progressed through leveling, it's progressed by doing the crafting personal action and rolling well on it. The higher the result the better the final product, but no matter how high it'll still only be worth 1 point to the progress.

I'm also thinking of revamping the process of getting tricks and boons. My current thinking on it is that it needs to be a bit easier to get tricks and the like. So, I'm playing with implementing a 'level system' for learning tricks.

There are four levels to learning tricks.
Vague Tricks: Tricks at this level are unusable and it requires 3 Successes to level up.
Rough Tricks: Tricks at this level are usable but at double the normal cost cost. It requires 9 Successes to level up.
Refined Tricks: Tricks at this level are usable at normal cost and require 81 Successes to level up. Most of your current tricks are here or in Rough.
Mastered Tricks: Tricks are usable with no cost and cannot be progressed further.

Before the current skill update, Imperial Fister said that most adult norsemen had a list of skills including weaponsmithing. I was sort of assuming that was still true after the skill change given that Weaponcraft is the 'maintain and repair your weapons' skill, which is sort of vital to being a self-sufficient warrior. I wouldn't expect all experienced warriors to have tricks for it, but a rank or two? Yeah, that seems likely.

Yeah, I figured.

This is effectively making getting tricks to the current level more expensive rather than less, since it's now 12 successes rather than 9. If the first level is 3 and the second is 6, then it's easier (since you can stop at 3 and have something and it's otherwise the same), but upping it to 12 for the 'standard' level we've got seems counterproductive.

I'm definitely fine with adding a new 'Rough Trick' level where tricks are usable earlier, but if getting to the second level is more than 9 successes total it sort of defeats the purpose of making tricks easier to learn, IMO.

Refined isn't the second level, it's the third. Though, I suppose you could call Vague 'level 0', so going by that you're not wrong.

I figured that people would be okay with higher requirements in exchange to getting access to the trick sooner, if more expensive.

If I did 3-6 rather than 3-9 then I'd have to make it 3-6-36 to keep it in tune, which is probably better all things considered.

Though, if I made Mastery 36 rather than 81, I'd have to change how it worked to compensate. I was okay with it making costs 0, since it had such a high requirement to get, but if it was 36 then it'd have to reduce costs by half, rounding down. It'd still make cost 1 tricks free, though. I'm not 100% sold on this part of it.

I was thinking of it as level 0, yeah.

It absolutely encourages getting tricks to 3 successes, it then discourages going farther because 9 successes to get a trick is expensive...9 successes to halve the cost of a trick is even more so. We'd still do it, but probably less frequently rather than more, as it's less benefits for the same cost.

Agreed. This makes us a lot more likely to actually pursue Mastery, and particularly to pursue a bunch of Masteries over time, which seems neat. It also makes NPCs with multiple Masteries but no stats at 7+ make a lot more sense (getting a stat from 5 to 7 is 96 successes after all, only slightly more than Mastering a trick if they're a total of 90).

This is probably fair...as awesome as our current Hugareida trick would be if it were free, it might be a bit broken (automatically disarming all foes forever and being immune to projectiles is, uh, certainly a thing that would be cool to see but maybe not one that would be balanced in play). You could add another level beyond Mastery (Grandmaster?) at something like 72 successes that made things free, if you wanted. I dunno if we'd ever go that far, but if we did even broken effects become more reasonable given the sheer investment.

I'd call that a 'Perfected Trick'.

Ah, growing pains.....

Let's hope we find a version that can be called good enough by everyone, system changes are hell on both end...

One advice/complaint I hear in quest is concerning bookkeeping. The census is usually that the easier/less it is the better.... Unles you really like the number crunching.

I like the more gradual move of the draft you give us about the new version of tricks.

Like, everyone can use a showel, but you gotta learn how you can throw stuff far or precisely with it.

Just wanna be sure, but the age breakdown of Norse warriors/man is still about right, difficulty wise, of how you imagined trick learning, yeah?

Preeeeetty much. I'll have to go in and make a couple changes one of these days, but they're more supposed to be very rough estimates rather than anything truly concrete.

(Hamr Trick Training: 6) 2 Successes
After one afternoon spent training, you're reminded of something that you wanted to ask your father.

Swallowing a mouthful of water, you call Steinarr's attention and voice your question. "Drifa called you by a kenning, 'Freedfire'. How come you don't use it?"

'That is a good question,' Blackhand says as he nods along. 'Never have I met a man who willingly turned down a kenning, for they lead to tremendous orthstirr.'

Steinarr takes a deep breath as he considers his thoughts. "What do you know of kennings?"

"Uh, they are names and titles granted to men, often after doing a great deed or service?" You have a feeling that there's more to it, judging by the weight Steinarr's giving it, but neither you nor Blackhand know what more he could mean.

"They are that, yes," Steinarr nods, like he expected you to say that, "but they are also more."

'More?' The fact that Blackhand of all people doesn't know what Steinarr's talking about has you on edge. What could he have discovered?

"How far it truly goes is something that I don't know." It's clear to see how important this is to him from how carefully he weighs each word before speaking. "I was very young, so my memory cannot be fully trusted, but I remember how Father was before he became Blackhand, when he was called Dreadfire."

You and Blackhand listen intently. Neither of you daring to even breathe a word, so absolutely focused are you on Steinarr's words. This is important; your bones hum with an utter certainty telling you just that.

"When he was Dreadfire, he was... scary. He had a fiery temper, a... a dreadful one." The poetry begins to unravel in your mind as Steinarr keeps speaking. "But when he came back with a new kenning, Blackhand, he was... He wasn't different. The temper was still there under the surface, but the blackened hand seemed to keep it at bay."

Your eyes widen as realization dawns. "And since your kenning was Freedfire, you acted like..."

"Like a fire freed from control, I devoured all in my way." Steinarr finishes for you, a grim look on his face. "Sten was two when I decided to discard the name, since I no longer needed to be so ferocious." He scratches at his beard as he sheepishly mutters, "I'm honestly surprised that he remembered enough to tell his daughter about it."

You nod along, mind whirling as you think about just what this could mean. Blackhand is silent, though you catch the odd contemplative musing.

You stand at the edge of a dark abyss with an uncertain depth.

Hallr Blackhand is not a man one commonly associates with hesitancy. After all, a man with a hand of charred bone is not a cautious man.

But ever since you spoke with Steinarr about his kenning, Blackhand has been distant. He speaks now and then, of course, but it's always with the same uncertain undertone. It's like he's doubting himself.

Which isn't good.

Such things lead to nidheart.

You'll have to do something about this, sooner rather than later.

Nid is disastrous for a normal soul, but for a charred soul like yours? How it would affect you is something you don't know, nor are you particularly eager to find out.

Talk with Abjorn and Steinarr
You find yourself sitting at the hearth with meal of sheep in hand. Steinarr had a sheep butchered earlier today, which is why you're currently eating your favorite food.

Frankly, it has you on edge and your suspicions raised.

Asveig sits next to you, her eyes narrowed to sharp slits. She seems to mirror your suspicious as she too eats her favorite meal — one of the few things you agree with your mother on. Sheep are the superior animal.

Abjorn and Steinarr sit across from you, nervousness clear in their gaze.

Steinarr clears his throat as he meets Asveig's steely eyes. "S-so, I was thinking about taking Abjorn here on a raid come summer, to get a measure of his mettle."

There's a long pregnant pause as Asveig, to your astonishment, stares Steinarr down. "Fine," she eventually says.

And then the spotlight falls to you. Though your permission isn't needed, you are his future wife and that matters.

What do you do?

Stigr's Absence
It has been a few months since you last saw Stigr. He didn't even go with you to check out the meteor with Sten!

Something's up and you mean to find out just what it is.

You find Stigr not in his house or on his farm, but sitting on a cliffside with his knees drawn up to his chest. He watches the ocean as it shifts and churns, splashing wave after wave against pillars of rock and stone.

He doesn't look up as you approach.

"Stigr?" You ask as you come to a stop behind him.

"Call me Stigandr," his voice is hoarse and scratchy, like he's been crying out his pain, "I don't feel much like a Stigr today."

"Alright, Stigandr. Can I sit?" You point at the ground next to him.

Stigandr shrugs. "If you must."

You do just that and a heavy cotton silence falls down between you.

"What would you do if Steinarr died?" Stigandr eventually asks, unable to stop himself from talking even in his current state.

You blink, caught entirely off-guard. "I... I don't know what I'd do."

"I didn't think you would, after all, I still don't." Stigandr's shoulders slump heavily, arms wrapping around his knees. "Kerr's dead, Halla," his voice cracks, "m-my father's dead."

"Oh." Your words are barely a whisper, audible only to you in the whistle of the wailing wind.

"He went off on a raid late in the season, with a few dozen warriors from Jurgdby. Twenty-four went out, seven came back." He gulps, his eyes hollow yet red and puffy. "...Kerr wasn't one of them."

"I'm sorry." You're way out of your depth here.

"I am too."

Aki's Project
Aki's blind eyes meet yours as you follow him through the woods. His raven flies in circles overhead, giving him vision beyond your own.

"It's just up ahead," he says, the scent of sulfur filling your nose.

You cough, eyes watering. "Gods, Aki! What is that!?"

"My project," he says, as if that explains anything. There's a bit of a smirk in his eyes. He's enjoying this, the little bastard!

"Fine, keep your secrets," you mutter to yourself. Besides, you'll find out what they are soon enough.

Soon, the trees give way to a small clearing of... craters? Scorched earth surrounds eight earthen wounds, like some giant had come out and scooped handfuls of dirt from the ground.

"What am I looking at here?" You ask as Aki waves an arm flippantly.

"Craters." He grins as you huff.

"Obviously, I have eyes," you roll them, "but that doesn't tell me why."

"Cause I was blowing stuff up."

You blink. He grins harder. "Just... Just tell me why I'm here."

"I've been working on replicating the runes on the meteor, so we can try to disarm it for your brother to get a crack at." Your brows rise as he explains what he's been doing. "The problem is I don't have enough hamr to keep my hands steady while I do it."

"And you came to me?" You squint, scratching at your head. "Why not Abjorn, or even Stigr?"

"Stigandr's too depressed and I already tried with Abjorn," Aki points at one of the craters, "but his hands are too big to get the details. I need someone with high enough hamr yet slender enough hands to do the work."

"And I'm the only person who can do it." You conclude.

"The only one who'll talk to me, yes." Aki corrects.

"You're doing a wonderful job of convincing me on this."

"You'd do it whether I was nice or not."

You sigh and the raven laughs. "Yeah, you're right. Just let me practice before I do it for real, alright?"

"Of course."

AN: Lots of stuff happened this turn. Lots of new information to think about.

25-minute moratorium.

Also, I'm implementing the new trick learning system. Crafting tricks only require 6 successes to get.

-Vague Tricks are 'level 0' tricks. They don't have a cost, but they also can't be used so it doesn't really matter.
-Rough Tricks are 'level 1' tricks. They have double the normal cost and require 3 Successes to reach, but are usable.
-Refined Tricks are 'level 2' tricks. They have normal costs and require 6 Successes to reach. Most of your tricks are either here or in Rough.
-Mastered Tricks are 'level 3' tricks. They have half-costs (rounding down, which makes cost 1 tricks free) and require 36 Successes to reach.
-Perfected Tricks are 'level 4' tricks. They have no cost at all, but requires a whopping 72 Successes to reach. There is no higher level.

Hmm. This is an interesting choice. I suggest we go with something like this:

[ ] Agree to Abjorn going, should he pass the trials.
-[ ] On the condition that you can do the same next year when you're of age.

Demanding to go this year is legitimately unreasonable, we're too young, but this is the time to make it clear that Halla is not gonna be the junior partner here and will be going along on such things going forward. Demanding that he wait a year and Halla and he go together is also viable, but comes off as more controlling and unreasonable, so I think this option is a tad better?

Or maybe that's wrong? Steinarr hardly goes raiding every year after all. Maybe just having him wait a year so you can both go together is better. That'd look like this, I think? It'd also mean he was here to give us training in the upcoming year, which is no small advantage and one Halla would be aware of in-universe.

[ ] Demand to go with Steinarr and Abjorn.
-[ ] In another year, when you're of age. This involves putting things off a year, but raiding isn't an every year activity for Steinarr anyway.

So yeah, after reflecting on it, here's what I feel Halla's decision should be:

[X] Demand to go with Steinarr and Abjorn.
-[X] In another year, when you're of age. This involves putting things off a year, but raiding isn't an every year activity for Steinarr anyway.

As for a plan:

[X] Plan Giving Ourselves Art Therapy
-[X] (Blackhand) Work at getting Blackhand to open up again.
-[X] (Personal) You can speak Broken-English, it's time to get fluent.
-[X] (Visit) Go visit...
--[X] The one at the bottom of the river
--[X] Invite our friends to come with us (maybe it'll help Stigandr feel a little better to be out doing something?)

Training:
-[X] (Steinarr's Training) Ask Steinarr to teach you a trick/some tricks (Write in)
--[X] Train Reinforce-Shield Trick 1d6
-[X] (Blackhand's Training) Try to develop old/train new hugareida tricks (Write in)
--[X] Train Contested Movement 1d6
-[X] (Training) Hamr (12 successes to rank up)
--[X] Train Hamr Itself 1d6
-[X] (Training) Hugr (5 successes to rank up)
--[X] Train Hugr Itself 5d6
--[X] Train Artcraft 2d6
-[X] (Training) Fylgja (5 success to rank up)
--[X] Train Fylgja Itself 1d6

Orthstirr:
-[X] (Orthstirr Usage)
--[X] 4 Hamr
--[X] 5 Hugr
--[X] 3 Fylgja
--[X] 1 Scouting
--[X] 2 Silver-Tongue
--[X] 6 free for tricks

So, for actions, I still think we should explore the one area we're unfamiliar with so there are no unpleasant surprises from that quarter. In addition to that, especially if going raiding next year speaking English seems useful, and talking with Blackhand is the highest possible priority bar none so we should do it.

For training, we need Artcraft 2 to advance the Meteor plotline, so let's get to work. We'll invest more dice next turn if we haven't made good progress and start on the Painting trick (luckily only 3 successes should be needed given the new Trick rules...I'd start on it this turn, splitting the dice currently in Artcraft, but I think we need the skill before we start getting tricks?) Meanwhile, raising Hugr is still the best investment aside from that, and our two tricks in progress are one success away from the next level, so we should definitely keep putting one die in each, while the 1 die per stat approach has been working well at chipping away at them and should continue.

Oof, I really want to do this, but I feel like we're just not ready. It would help resolve the conflict by expanding our idea of what a wife is, though.

My above suggestion is that we ask them to put it off for a year so we can go. I think that we can get ready by then, and 16 is the usual minimum anyway, so it makes sense in universe. It also shouldn't be a huge imposition, Steinarr doesn't go raiding every year and most people don't go until they're 20, having Abjorn wait until he's 17 should not be a huge deal.
