I think the fact that Stigr may be out of practice is all the more reason to bring him. He's an archer and he'll never catch up to the rest of us in orthstirr if we deny him all opportunities to earn it. Like, going to support us on this is likely as safe a way to gain orthstirr as he's gonna get in a long time without going raiding...and we've seen how risky that is if a knight shows up.
It's more that an archer will
excel in a defensive battle, and we have to treat this event like it's the Coup de Grace against Steinarr. Ideally, they'd have one of his last sons be killed trying to save him, and then his daughters slain while he was too far in Despair to do anything about it. They did try to block Halla from finding out about this, so we have to assume that there are Agents in the area--close enough to intercept a message sent
literally next door.
Whether monsters, spirits, or something else,
someone went to great lengths to try and blind Halla to what was going Down this season. We just avoided it by trying to address the problem
right fucking now. So we came on our own and then found Out. Our choices in the lead-up as well locked us into Sten's "Find the focal point of the Curse and destroy it" route instead of the "Banish the Curse with a Legal Battle" route that we'd have gotten if we talked to our sister. This is the Expected Result that our Foe probably has accounted for, and while it would have preferred Halla not get involved because she's strong enough to tilt the scales, they wouldn't have completely gambled on it Not Happening.
So, a two pronged assault. Either we send
too little to investigate the Curse Focus, which means Sten dies (Because the plan was always to have him get killed if it could). If we send
Too much to the Curse Focus though, we risk whoever was in place to intercept those messages sending word and just attacking Steinby directly, killing the largely defenseless wives and daughters. So even if we solve the curse, the damage is now too deep to do anything about.
Only through sending
just enough power to both avenues can we parry both assaults--and if we're lucky, get another piece of Evidence to the table beyond just what we might find next turn. More importantly, a complete success should make Horra desperate, which'll make him less careful in the coming months--exactly what we need to track him to his hideout and nail him to the wall. Gabriel is our major spoiler here, because Horra (The
most likely one behind this), probably doesn't actually know how a Christian's cultivation works, because he's too much of a coward to intentionally go poking them. He probably doesn't have a good read on just how scary a decently skilled Squire can be, especially with his Armor.
So yeah, I think Abjorn, Sten, Halla, and Gabriel have good odds at being enough to break through the prong at the Curse Focus, while Halfdan + at least one of the Stig Brothers should be able to secure Steinby, especially if we just get some help from one of his sons as a picket while he lurks in the area ready to reinforce if given a signal.
