I'm sure we can figure something out, Denmark is right there
Also, it's not like this area is short on brine for use in preservation.

In kind of want to say something like "well, we couldn't get you back your goods. How about some whale-meat instead?"

For that matter, I'd bet that the local king would get real value out of knowing exactly where that whale is... especially if we leave the meat-stick and the illusion still on it.

Well, here's a plan for going to the Whale. I think we need to talk to our new acquaintance and clarify the situation, and round out some Trick Training.

[X] Plan To The Whale!
-[X] Whale Carcass (1 Day, 5% chance of Bad Luck)
-[X] Talk to a Crewmember
--[X] Brother Bartholomew
--[X] Free him and discuss lessons in Latin in exchange for protection, a ride home fairly soon once we've learned it, and maybe some money if he seems reluctant.
-[X] Nighttime: Spend all nights
--[X] Lodge with local landowners (Silver-Tongue Check, -1 Success for every 10 crew you have, +1 Morale)
--[X] Reassign all 8 shapeshift slots to Improved Attractiveness for this roll.

Training:

-[X] (Training) Hamr (511 xp to rank up)
--[X] Train an Throw Trick for actual thrown weapons, designed for general applicability 4xp (2xp)

-[X] (Training) Hugr (256 xp to rank up)
--[X] Train Sparkbomb 36xp (9xp)
--[X] Train Sunshine Slap 36 xp (9xp)
--[X]Train Sunfire Spear 36 xp (9xp)
--[X] Train a Campfire Trick to grant someone (including the user)additional fire resistance 4xp (1xp)
--[X] Train an Ignition Trick to blind a target with a bright flash of light 4xp (1xp)
--[X] Train a Gale Trick to use wind to keep people trapped in our vicinity by pulling them toward us, making us the center of a vortex 3xp

Hm... Just curiosity, but why the fire resistance trick?

I am glad we are finally doing the flashbang trick though.... it was so long since quest start!

Skane does not always have a lot of fresh food, does it? Since they tend to neglect their farming in favour of raiding.

I'm wondering if we take the whale there and sell it at a friendly price.

I'm not necessarily averse to an Ignition trick, but I still think we should find a way to adapt Unending Time in the Sun to do this. That way it gains all the metaphysical power of sunlight, which is useful against all sorts of foes, and links into our kenning. Yes, it's a lot of Orthstirr, but blinding a large group of enemies or super-blinding one strong enemy is obviously worth it.

They have thralls for that. I doubt we get good food prices from them...they raid for it if they need it.

I mean...we actually have an Alloy to make all Ignition Tricks count as sunlight, so this seems overly fiddly to me.

Will we using shapeshifting to improve our roll here?

You are absolutely right. My bad, I'll go add it.

@Imperial Fister, could you put on the map roughly where the whale corpse is?

Yes, but a miniature sun which can shine continuously for an entire day represents a lot of sunlight. Making a sun explode means, thematically, that we've just created a magical supernova, which is bound to be more powerful than your garden-variety Ignition trick.

This is called out in the various updates there've been as a strategy which is not foolproof, and their fields are described as a bit neglected. Mostly it's a friendly thing to do and may be a bit closer than Hedeby. Dragging a dead whale along the side of our boat is bound to attract attention. A priori there's no reason to expect prices to be lower than Hedeby.

Also, minor point of order, but can we start saying Hedeby rather than "Denmark"? That's the actual name of the town where Johannes is from. It's a minor thing, but it's vaguely odd to say the name of an entire country.

I mean, I'm not against researching exploding our UtiS in principle, I guess, but that sounds like a really expensive thing that requires setup. A cheap way to blind people remains useful.

It's a bad strategy, but it's bad because they're relying on it. Which means they don't think it's a bad strategy or highly value food or they'd be doing things differently.

And the whale is back in the direction of Hedeby. I think that means both are equally close, or thereabouts anyway. We could potentially go to Bornholm, but I'm really dubious we'd get better prices there.

It shouldn't require much more setup than the time it takes to cast the spell, along with whatever we're using to explode it. A Sparkbomb internally could suffice. Using a Sparkbomb is also extra appropriate given that Sparkbombs implode, and supernovae are also triggered by implosion.

I mean, I think everyone values food? You can't eat gold. A large amount of whale meat is unlikely to go underappreciated, is all I'm saying.

Mostly I think it's a friendly thing to do (I wouldn't want to sell it at high enough prices to make a big profit even if we could) for distant family. Also, there are those two Martial Styles we want to pick up.

That all still sounds in the 80-100 Orthstirr range at a minimum. I'm not saying I'm against it, I'm saying it's a wildly different use case than a general 'blind that guy' option.

I'm not sure we're all that friendly with them, honestly. And I think we do want to try and profit from the sale of Whale Meat and other Whale Products...it's our only profit this trip, in all likelihood, and it's kind of a ludicrous amount (per stuff IF said, our household is likely winding up with, like, north of 600 Food...we do not need and cannot store that quantity).

But I'm not flatly against going there, I'm just saying the Food would probably not be valued all that much compared to any place less raiding-focused. Like, they have food, which they get sort of incidentally as part of raiding for other stuff, and think they always will (or their farms would be in better condition)...it's a coal to Newcastle situation in their minds. But stopping there, maybe selling some other stuff plus some Food, then selling more food in Hedeby, then more in Jurgdby and the Hading, is viable, potentially, if we want to go and try and pick up a Martial Style.

Like, we can go there, but we aren't going to do them a favor by selling them food. That's not a favor they desire or would appreciate. We might sell them some food anyway, but it'd be a side thing and they won't care much.

I'm not sure about the equivalence being drawn here between "they engage in raiding" and "they have totally abundant supplies of food and don't desire more". Like, the latter might be the case, but I'm not sure it's a coal to Newcastle situation, since they're notably not a big primary producer and the only description we have of their agriculture is that it seems slightly run down. They may already be importing lots of food (since they have an excess of loot); but I don't think they can be stealing enough food to meet all their day-to-day requirements given how many raiding expeditions that would entail.

This is probably getting a bit too fair into the weeds on a minor point though, in fairness.

I think it would be really funny if the reason was that we gibbed a champion or the magician when we cast Rebuking Thermal Lance.

We didn't do that, though.

Most places you raid have food, so you can take that as well. But really, it's the farms that lead me to believe that they think they're set on food...if they were having to spend any meaningful amount of money on food, the farms would be in better shape. But they aren't. You only let your food production facilities get run down like that if you have more than enough food and don't feel at all concerned about it.

Like, they might easily be wrong to be so unconcerned, but the farms wouldn't be run down if they were actually concerned about getting enough Food.

On my part, an Unending Time in the Sun-based blinding trick would, at minimum, have a gargantuan AOE. I don't think would actually be better at blinding a single foe, though. Because something so big, you're gonna close your eyes and that's the blind spelltrick gone welp.
