Plus, I'm also like 99% sure the thread isn't going to go on another Raid again, which makes the Monastry Kidnapping plan even more dubious in terms of thread willingness (also it involves thralling people, de-facto at least, which makes it double doubtful).

Which just leaves 'convince well-educated people who are probably in a cushy position (they learned Latin, they're rich and are gonna use it) to teach a viking how to read Latin (potentially including long stays on a viking boat or horrible Norselands)'. Like just the part where they need to stay with other vikings might be a deal breaker, let alone the part where they teach us Latin.

I mean 'rich' and 'educated' are not the same thing. They tend to go together in that you need to be rich to become educated in this era, but the reverse (where education brings wealth) is not nearly as true. One impoverished nobleman (which certainly exist) and some money and we're there.

To say nothing of Kazimir. I'd actually be unsurprised if he knows Latin. Not something we should count on, but a possibility. We'd need to find a common language first in that case (making the whole process take meaningfully longer), but it's not impossible.

He knew our name...this has a mental component, I don't think direct questions will reveal him like this if it is a fake. Either our mind is getting read or we're hearing what we expect to hear or something. The thing with Steinarr might sneak through due to being less direct and us not really knowing what his response would be, but assuming it is a fake, I think it's designed to counter this kind of check.

It may not be total mind-reading if it is a mental thing? He didn't appear to know our the scholar until we asked.

It's certainly possible that it won't work, but what do we lose by trying?

Hmmm. Maybe. I'm considering adding a combat plan just in case (specifically, if there's no illusion-break and he keeps attacking even as we try to talk...I think that makes it very likely to not be Gabriel, but it's possible if the illusion is too good to break) anyway right now, and I'll maybe try and add something like this.

So, Gabriel wants to overwhelm us, huh? Sounds like a poor decision :V
It's not really in keeping with Carolingan Cultivation Fervor regen either honestly. In tactical terms when you have regen and the other party doesn't you should, well, not go Nova. It's certainly a point in favor of 'this is an illusion' theory.

His fighting style also seems a bit off too doesn't it? Tons of high power attacks and then finishing us off in the next round? That doesn't sound like something Gabriel would do against us in a fight.

It does, however, sound like our fighting style. At least, as I see it.

(Carolingan Cultivation is really bad at Nova'ing.)

Okay, here's the revised plan, including Skippy's suggestion of asking about a prior conversation and an actual combat plan, though it only goes off under specific circumstances. I still personally think either this isn't Gabriel, in which case the plan won't happen as revealing that is a round break, I think, or he'll be willing to talk...but if he's not Gabriel but our anti-illusion stuff is not sufficient or it's Gabriel and he's gone off the deep end somehow, there is a plan.

The non-combat part is unchanged except for the addition of Skippy's suggestion.

[X] Plan We Don't Buy This

-[X] Use The Mind's Eye Blinks to see if that's actually Gabriel, adding 3 Odr.
--[X] Assuming that doesn't reveal anything, offer to let Gabriel have the scholar.
--[X] Note that there is stuff we need here, we made a deal, but we can negotiate for the rest
--[X] Let him know about Steinarr's death even if he insists on fighting. Simply phrase it as 'You should know, my father was killed.' and see how he reacts.
--[X] Depending on all of the above, use Eyespeaking and ask what we told him about Norse cultivation after our spar.
--[X] If he refuses to talk we will, of course, fight.

-[X] Assign our 8 shapeshifting slots to Increased Lung Capacity x2, Improved Liver x1, Target-Tracking Eyes x3, Adrenaline Rush x2,
-[X] Invest 4 Orthstirr in Hugr, 1 in Composure, 4 in Tactics, 3 in Scouting, 6 in Silver-Tongue (-18 Orthstirr)
-[X] 101d6 Attack (101d6 tricks)
-[X] 40d6 Defense (40d6 tricks)
-[X] 0d6 Intercept
-[X] Put 4 Orthstirr into 8 layers of Reinforce Shield before the combat begins (-4 Orthstirr) and add an instance of Explosive Reactive Armor (-9 Orthstirr)
-[X] Activate Stoker State 4 (-12 Orthstirr), Slipstream (-8 Orthstirr), Heated Shroud (-5 Orthstirr), and Ember-Wing Cloak (No cost) as combat begins. All subsequent actions receive +2d6 from Sunshine and Skyfire.
-[X] If we do get hit through Reinforce Shield somehow, use Slowing Slog to reduce incoming damage (-81 Orthstirr)
-[X] Put up a 120d6+7 (w/Hugareida) Atgeir Bodyguard (-124 Orthstirr) adding 3 Odr, do not use this against Fleinns

-[X] Make a total of four 63d6+7 Orthstirr-enhanced x36 Kindle Spinner attacks w/Puncture (-45 Orthstirr and +4 Stoked Dice each) and five 64d6+7 Sharpenedx30 Lightning-Charged Shatter-Wrist Tricks combined with Firebomb Strike attacks w/Puncture (-42 Orthstirr and +4 Stoked Dice each) if he manages to close with us.

-[X] Against melee attacks default to using Contested Movement (-1 Orthstirr, 16d6+7 Hamr Roll +All Stoked Dice, lose all Stoked Dice, then get +4 Stoked Dice) and counterattack with Sharpenedx6 Lightning Charged Shatter-Wrist Tricks combined with Firebomb Strikes w/Puncture (-18 Orthstirr, +4 Stoked Dice), adding our Stoked Dice to the rolls.
-[X] By default use Sword Guard to defend against ranged attacks (except Fleinns, as noted above). In response to anything ranged that gets through use as many quick-drawn Shield Sacrifices (-3 Endurance on one Shield) as needed and/or four 122d6+16 Fortified and Reinforcedx107 Sway defenses (-110 Orthstirr each) as seems appropriate. If we have drawn a shield and defended against a Trick, always defend against the next Trick Attack with that Shield as well (-3 Endurance on the same Shield).

-[X] Tactics – The hope here is to either reveal that this is not Gabriel, in which case our tactics change, or to talk him down if it is him. If that fails, then we fight. Specifically, we will take to the air and stay at range using Kindle-Spinners to wear him down...staying at range so as to hopefully avoid poison if this is a Slavic cultivator disguising themselves, and because Gabriel is best in melee, but using bigger attacks in case Rebuke really is in play. If he manages to engage us in melee, we'll attempt to break his arms, as that seems a good way to end this nonlethally and also pretty good if he's a Slavic cultivator wearing a Mask (broken arms are bad for most people).

Why are they bad at nova'ing? Is it cause of their small pool compared to the rest of the cultivation styles?

Yes. A Knight on the 4th bead of the 6th Decade has a per-turn recovery of 108 Fervor...but a total pool of only 162. His Fervor is slightly better per point than Orthstirr, but he has only a bit over 1/10 our pool not even counting our Aspects. It just...doesn't work out well.

I think this is giving too much info for our foe.

If this is Gabriel, he will know we won't kill him anyways, and that we will talk afterwards.

Better see how they react when we mention the revenge and meeting again.

Hm..... "I know something that will impact your revenge greatly " perhaps?

Sorr, bit hard to think in the small breaks at work....

Edit: argh, almost forgot to vote....
[X] Plan We Don't Buy This

Hm.... Would still prefer more dice on the defense, as well as running him out, if he goes for big attacks... But Christians have more dice/endurance and we don't really know how the Slavs compare....

All it tells them is we're here for stuff and the scholar. And they knew that already, since we just already said the scholar thing and why would we be here if not to raid them for stuff? Like...what does this actually tell them?
Out dad.

Like, if this is the headman of the village with a face/mask trick, how do they how Gabriel looks and speaks? Or his powers?

I do still think it's a trick, but I would like to only mention Steinar after we are sure it's Gabriel.

Just imagine if they can take on Steinarr's face....

If they turn into our dad, all that would do would be piss Halla off. That proves they're just a shapeshifter/illusionist. It's not productive and I highly doubt knowing he's dead will make that kind of emotional manipulation any more likely...like, if they're gonna turn into our loved ones to disorient us, turning into Abjorn or Sten is not actually much better than Steinarr, I don't think.

Honestly, if they know he's dead they're less likely to turn into him if anything...turning into living people they might try convincing us that we've been tricked into fighting our friends, turning into dead people is just a giveaway.

Hey IF, did Mscislaw say anything about what kind of tricks we could expect from the Wolinians? And anything about Masks?
You should @ me for questions like this.

Anyways, Wolinians aren't all that different than your typical Slav, though they have an unusual affinity for boats. They are far more familiar to the tricks and general tactics of other peoples on account of the city of Wolin's prominence as a trading port.

There isn't mention of masks.
@Imperial Fister or the Estonians? Asking about the Wolinians capabilities was one of the questions for them as well.
The Estonians weren't overly familiar with Wolin (I'll refund you those questions)
Halla, can you differentiate the power of cultivators by culture? Or it's all the same just by different names?
I don't understand the question

Currently running some errands with my Dad, so it'll be a bit before I'm home to call the vote. I reckon, oh, 2 or so hours?

does a Knight/priest has a different feel than a Norseman, a Slav, or a Thane?
They do, yes.

Carolingians feel like very refined, like water that's been filtered over and over again.

Norsemen feel like a tightly-wound spring, full of energy that they're eager to release all at once.

Slavs feel reserved and guarded, like they're waiting for a moment that may never come.

Anglo-Saxons feel like rain and freshly turned soil, but it's faded and mostly spent.

That reminds me, does Gabrial's Focus seem like it's actually Focus instead of something closer to Rhythm or Frenzy or whatever the Estonians were using?

You swallow the lump in your throat as you tighten your grip around the silent Sagaseeker. Gabriel does the same as his eyes waver and his eyes tremble.

Neither of you want to fight the other, not really. Your heart sings for blood and you've slaked your thirst well, yet that glee breaks against the rocks set before you now.

In a last-ditch effort to avoid spilling the blood of your once-friend, you let your mind's eye blink itself clean. Darkness falls around you for a split second as you feed odr into the magic. A surge of power streaks across your mind and body as your mind opens up once again.

...Gabriel's gone, like he was never there to begin with. In his place stands nothing but an empty cloud of smoke already climbing towards the heavens.

Casting your gaze across the killing grounds, you're met with similar sights as your men deal death to thin air. Sure, there's more than a few Slav warriors scattered in bloody heaps, but it's nowhere near the slaughter there had once been. There are no children to be seen screaming as they clutch at their mothers' skirts. There are no mothers desperately holding their children close as they blink back tears at their menfolks' demise. They're all gone, yet their wealth remains.

A trickle of power catches your attention as it fades off into the woods—where the source of this illusion is sure to lie.

Chasing after and defeating this magician is sure to end the illusion, but it would mean leaving your men vulnerable...

What do you do?
[ ] Hunt for the magician
[ ] Attempt to dispel the magic
-[ ] How?
