For low-tide's gift, another option is whales. Dead whales washing up on shore are a major find in Norse culture - literal tons of meat, fat and bone. Feuds have been started over claims to a washed up whale. Now, it took me a while to think of how that might relate to fire, but then I realized - whale-oil.
Fun fact:
Whale corpses can explode.

Bloody Explosion: Whale Carcass Explodes, Occurrence Takes Place on California Coast

An offal explosion has recently been reported and various online news sites said, it took place on the California coast close to Tomales Bay.

[X] "Of course!"

the other 2 are either not confident enough or imply we haven't been training to be warrior instead of a wife.

I think we might need to use multiple dice on training something soon as we have not touched reinforce since this message appeared so we have 36 successes left.

Yeah, we do need to do a heavy push into Reinforce-Shield if we want to get Reinforce online. Given how valuable it is to have a cheap-dice adder on defense after all.

Also, I'm surprised that we haven't bothered to invest a single dice into learning how to farm. Seems like that'll bite us in the ass eventually.

Bouncing back to this for a second, we hadn't done much with any non-combat skill until pretty recently, and then in terms of non-combat skills we've been prepping for the raid, where farming will be less than useful. We definitely do want to buy Farmwork...but probably post raid, and we're never gonna be more than mediocre as compared to the population as a whole just because people tend to focus on it hard and we won't be going nearly as hard on it no matter what (Farmwork 7 by age 20 is apparently common...I doubt we'll ever have more than Farmwork 3-4, though our Hamr may be above average by a point or so compensating slightly).

On the bright side, women in this culture weren't, as far as I can tell, actually expected to be the primary farmer, tending more to managing things, cooking, making clothing, and taking care of children. The stuff we're expected to do as a woman mostly falls more under Housecraft (which we can raise pretty quickly), and Management, which we have better ratings in.

This is mystical rather than genetic. I suspect it applies to even children we technically bear before it kicks in as long as we get it within the next few years and instruct our children ourselves. We certainly do need to start doing it, but I don't think we need to panic and spend all our dice on it or anything.

Still, the question seems worth asking @Imperial Fister are we on a tight timeline to raise this where a kid we have before getting this will lack the bonus even if we get it the very next turn, or is it more conceptual?

It's both, actually.

If the dice gods were to bestow a child on you next update, then that child will not receive Bloody Basics even if you got it the turn after. Genetics are decided at the moment of conception.

Mmm, well, hopefully it's not a hard roll to make to avoid those complications. It does look like we're going to be in a hurry to push that though if we don't want the first potential descendent to be the runt.

Also, just re-read the number of Tricks needed for Armorcraft to actually do anything and I'm screaming internally now we need more training dice. Maybe we can get Sten to help us with that?

Ah. That definitely makes that a more urgent priority then, though we're not gonna get it this year...pretty much no matter what.

I've mentioned before that it's 54 dice on average if we're rushing...we can do that, but not in much less than a year or so without crippling our progress in everything else (well, not reliably anyway). I'm thinking 7 dice in the upcoming turn and escalating from there as we complete some of the low-hanging skill fruit we still need.

It's possible. You do get a few training opportunities while raiding, not as many dice, though. Just your base and hamingja, plus bonuses derived from Charred Soul.
I mean, do we have to chose our first baby as our next character?
You choose from all of your children.

I mean, do we have to chose our first baby as our next character? I'd like to have the, uh, extra life hanging around, just in case.

It's more that we probably want all of our descendents to at least be capable of taking care of themselves. We've just seen what happens after all if a household can't protect themselves and they get a bad event.

Siblings are OP if we can get them to start training each other. Having extra farmhands should also give us and Abjorn more time to raid.

Hopefully! If we can pick up bonuses specific to Reinforce Shield (or just free progression...we've gotten progression in tricks after fights before) we can maybe pull it off, depending on circumstances.

did the math in a spreadsheet we will need 10.3 turns (about 2 years in story) of 5 dice to get it on avg, i thought about 6 die but that was getting tedious since I'm not good at spreadsheets

What are the requirements to unlock it?
Hamr 7, so a decent ways away.

Alright, while I'm not giving you the rules for it just yet, here's a sneak peak at some of the effects you can select from
-Thickened Skin - Reduces incoming damage by 1
-Dense Muscles - Increases damage by 1
-Offensive-Tuned Reflexes - Increases dice rolled for attacks (basic and trick) by 1
-Defensive-Tuned Reflexes - Increases dice rolled for defend (basic and trick) by 1
-Sharpened Senses - Doubles 'sensing' rolls, such as trying to detect something via sight or smell.
-Softened Steps - Doubles 'stealth' rolls.

Sounds right. That's just under the 54 dice I was getting from eyeballing it. I think planning based on needing 54 dice is close enough for government work and we can fine tune it as we get closer to done.

Honestly the dice are so swingy anyway we need to fine tune it after every training roll. If we invest 7 dice next turn we could roll 0 successes, and still need 54 dice more, or 14 successes and need only 33 more dice on average.

Ooh, those are super neat and we definitely want them. Of course, at 94 successes away from Hamr 7, I doubt we'll get there any time soon.
