I think that I'm actually going to leave the vote to go on till tomorrow, as that way I'd have more time and focus to work on your breakthrough

So, while I know exactly what I want to do for your breakthrough, I'm curious as to what your theories and/or hopes are for it.

Honestly, I think it's going to be an Expansion. Once your home is secure, that's when your eyes can settle onto the wilderness beyond it, to find treasures and adventure there.

Still, we'll still be in Realm One even after our breakthrough? Good gravy, I thought we were stepping through a Realm here, not just what amounts from going from "Early to Middle Realm One"

Well, I honestly don't know what it does. More Odr income has been theorized, but that doesn't seem quite right to me? It probably expands our Soulscape's area and may trigger an attack of some sort, spiritual, physical, or both, though likely one we can handle, but what it actually does is a mystery I look forward to finding out the answer to.

I'm not sure if this is true. It's plausible that Lidrun is Realm 1.5 due to missing something essential (like, didn't make a house, field, and fence properly before hitting 81 Odr...so past Saga Establishment but not properly Realm 2) and we're about to hit Realm 2 for real. We'll see which shortly.

Huh, that might be it, she might have had a botched breakthrough if she didn't do all the setup in advance, so she'd just be a half-step Realm 2 instead of a proper Realm 2. Probably gets some of the benefits still, but likely not the full package.

We're hitting the Breakthrough with Superior Quality in both Protection, Upkeep, and Shelter, which are the limits without bringing Bullshit Magic into place, and there's usually significant benefits involved when your foundation is very strong.

I suspect that you can still make do without the Fields and the Shelter (Though I suspect you're definitely regretting it in the former case, because apparently the ability to produce Food in-house is Important in future steps, and the latter case doesn't seem to have any benefits yet, but is definitely important for something later). But the Fence I think is a straight up "You either get this or something equivilant or you Get Fucked". But I suspect someone robust enough can just fight off the predators until they can throw something together.

That being said, I wonder if the benefit of having all of this stuff of high quality ready to go when you break through is important, because the surging Odr will just refine everything that's already in place up to higher levels?

…How did I not think of that?

It would be really funny if this foe that's been talking up the unbelievable power of Odr crippled herself and got stuck at almost the bottom of the power ladder

Oh right forgot to respond to the question but Alectai has proposed the idea that makes the most sense to me.

The big issue of course is the conflicting incentives going on.

On the one hand, the best way to get Orthstirr is to Go Out And Do Awesome Things.

But the way you advance in Odr Cultivation is coming home and making a nice place to live--at least at our current level of resolution.

I think hitting 81 Odr causes your soulscape to come alive in some way. I think we probably get some kind of resource? 3 is a special number and so far we have seen Orth and Odr, so there's probably a third resource, perhaps a Shen equivalent.

I think metaphysically the Fields allow you to actually derive benefit from soulscape upgrade. They're fields right? So they 'produce' whatever it is that the next level gives. Then your house is your 'storage' capacity. Or maybe your ability to regulate it. The Fence is just protection, but if you don't have it life is gonna suuuuck.

Yeah, I suspect the fence is the absolutely essential thing. Which means, if my theory is right, Lidrun is likely missing one or both of the other two. I dunno what the effects of that would actually be, but it probably isn't good. If there is a speeding up of Odr gain, then it's probably based on the Fields, for example.

That sort of irony makes good narrative sense, which perhaps makes it more likely given the nature of Norse cultivation.

This seems plausible eventually, but 2nd Realm may be a bit early for it. If there is a shen equivalent it'd definitely be provided by the Fields, and I'm deeply curious what it would actually let us do, but it probably kicks in at Realm 3 or 4 at the earliest.

Sorry but don't you get those from more powerful cultivators/gods?

Sort of? In most cultivation stuff I've seen you do start producing it yourself eventually...but probably not in the 2nd Realm.

I have sort of assumed that Lidrun didn't fuck up her Realm 1 breakthrough.. it could be possible though. I am not sure which part she would have skipped though. My understanding is that if you have equivalents they sort of still work.

She's a wanderer with contempt for 'little people'...I think she could've skipped the Fields. Needing a house is pretty intuitive and so are the fences, but needing fields only seems necessary if you realize you're building a farm, not just a place to stay.

Bearbreaker (Skippy)
I've given up on getting the system into my brain to participate more (i like complex systems, but this one just didn't hit the rng of my brain right i guess :p), but for whoever is competing for plans, any chance of there being room in the Plan(TM) to use the inspiration from abjorn vs the bear? iirc his main weakness was low orthstirr, right? also just want him to have more Nice Things :p

Quick Edit: also i think there was discussion a while back of trying adding odr to inspiration working, and i dont remember if that ever got done, or if this would be a chance to test that as well?

So I know I replied to this a while back saying that I was planning to write something for this, and I had some time today.

Bearbreaker

Shadow stalks the meadow,
six-clawed beast seeks feasts, to
sup from bloodied bodies.
Beware the lair dweller!
But Terror-Bear fears not,
brings shade-pelt a belting.
Bold Abjorn's force folds his
foe, breaks the bone breaker.

A praise poem for Abjorn, in dróttkvætt metre.

In terms of theories, I'm wondering if the fence will be enough on its own, or we'll need to fight a bumrush of spirits seeing if they can catch us lacking. Also relatedly wondering if we will end up with a more direct connection to the Dark Forest at the end of this.

Nice! Have a Reward Dice and an orthstirr!

Cheers! If we use this poem for an Inspiration action, the Orthstirr income from that Inspiration can go to Abjorn right?

Oh, while we're on the subject, since we do now have the poem for that runestone commemorating our first kiss under the falling tree, will we get to see how that works out? I realise this is a lot of stuff going on in our soul given we've already got the breakthrough, but I'd like to see how that project pans out. Would it be better to resubmit it next turn to avoid too much clutter?
