Dwarfs seem to be inherently businesslike, whereas I don't expect trolls to be that way (or any way, in specific, universally).

I suspect aiming for being a good neighbor, and maybe a friend given time and goodwill, would be the better tack to take than trying to establish a super formal trade relationship.

I think this is likely correct. I'm also not sure what we'd even want from this guy in the long term, trade-wise...there might be something, but we'd need to get to know him better to find out what.

@DeadmanwalkingXI , can we talk the secret of the spectacles out of the troll? Seems like it will be very useful for the Norse with the nearsighted trait, like us.

I mean, once Halla figures out what they are, potentially. I guess that might qualify as a trade deal, but it'd be a one-time thing.

Since we claim this as 'our' land, giving him food (a sheep) would position us as the host and him as the guest and establish bonds of hospitality, right? Meaning it would be an offence against the gods for either of us to harm the other.

Nah, IF clarified that this is not on our land, just very nearby. He's the one claiming it if anything...if he accepts he's arguably accepting us as guests, but we'd be the guests, not him.

That troll has a pair of spectacles so that's another future thing in the past just like plate armor and pencils. I'm wondering if time travel is actually a thing that's happening now.
I mean, it could just be the effect of superhumans and super intellect on technology progress. Sure, optics are a complicated subject, but all it takes is one fella to develop the power to see the path of light with the propensity to write things down and suddenly the idea of lenses doesn't seem that complicated. Sure, shaping a lens requires a lot of skill, but there are lots of people with literally superhuman dextarity.

And that's not even considering that they may be purely magical items. We only assume that they must be glasses with lensed glass because that is what we think of when we think glasses. They could just be enchanted glass that improves the sight of anyone who looks through them.

I feel like it's a bit like the way that the Shire in Middle Earth have mantle clocks, waistcoat buttons and umbrellas despite existing in a wider mileu that is more reminsicient of the early medieval world or late antiquity. It's there for flavour, and it does not change a lot about the wider setting.

We could ask him about them out of curiosity, I guess, since Halla is near-sighted.

Eh, there's plenty of people historically who've gone into battle wearing glasses. Not a hugely uncommon sight in gunpowder age warfare and onwards.

Also given Halla's abilities as a craftswoman, we could probably make them nearly unbreakable or something. In the event they did get lost or broken... we'd not be any worse off than we are now, really. This is assuming that our Shapecrafting doesn't completely remove the trait, but it's still on our character sheet, so I'd assume it doesn't?

This is the age of melee combat, though. Spectacles are inconvenient in melee combat.

Our Shapeshifting effectively nullifies Nearsighted.

Specifically, Target Tracking Eyes and Sharpened Senses negate the nearsighted penalty as long as we have either of those shaped

I mean, I think if we made magic spectacles, it would probably be fine.

Or, actually, wait, I've just had a much better which avoids this issue!! We could build them into our helmet! The helmet already looks like an owl, who have big binocular eyes and good vision, and it has runes about enhancing our senses, so it even fits!

If this would essentially let us replicate the effect of Target-Tracking Eyes with our helmet, then that would be another shapecrafting slot we could put towards something else.

You could also just tie your glasses to your head, like in children's soccer.

I'll call the vote in an hour and a half, as I've got a doctor's appointment

For what it's worth, we probably already have this, our current helmet's runes were designed to mimic Target-Tracking Eyes, though we haven't gotten a firm answer on whether they remove nearsighted. That said, we mostly keep a slot on that for the damage...glasses being available would not incline me to remove it.

Which doesn't mean learning to make glasses would be bad, we could make some for Sigurdr for one thing, but I don't think they'd meaningfully free up a slot.

Well, timing was weird, took longer then expected, but I have returned with intent to write in mind!

Offer something we brought (probably a freshly slaughtered sheep or something like that) as an apology gift/housewarming present.

The sheep's limp head flops as you hold out its carcass to the troll, who eyes it warily.

"My name is Halla Skyfire and I'm sorry for entering uninvited," you say, offering the corpse as apology. The troll reaches out and accepts the sheep with narrowed eyes and slow movements. "I've had some bad experiences with trolls before and, when I saw a new troll-cave spring up nearby, I had to check it out."

Gripping the sheep with both hands, the troll squints behind the see-through circles balancing on his nose and ears. "First of all, I am no lowly troll. I," he brings a palm to his chest as he speaks with clear pride, "am a bergsra."

You tense as he reveals himself, dozens of stories of men and women being tricked and stolen away into the mountains by bergsra running free through your mind. Was this a trap to lure in troll-seeking adventurers? What for?

"Was this a trap?" You hiss as hand trail towards your weapons.

The troll—er, bergsra—to his credit, seems to have no understanding of your words. He quirks his head to the side, eyes narrowing even further in confusion. "Trap? What in the tumbling stones are you talking about?" He waves a hand around his cave, "If this were a trap, you think it'd lead straight to where I sleep?"

You open your mouth to argue, but promptly close it. After all, "I... You have a point."

"I often do," the bergsra huffs and holds out a hand, "I'm Jurgen."

His name draws an eyebrow up your head as you match wrists. Jurgen isn't exactly the most impressive name for a creature of the mountains to have, but if that's his name, then it's his name.

"So..." he trails off as he pushes the contraption back up his nose, "is there anything else you want or can I go back to sleep?" He yawns, batting at the air before his mouth, "I didn't get much rest last night."

Is there anything else you want?

AN: You got very close with the hulder idea, I'll give you that

No moratorium.

I think just one or two questions then let this man sleep, we can come back another time if we really need to.

[X] Yes, there is!
-[X] Ask briefly why he moved here, see if we can mutually agree to be good neighbors, and set up a future meeting to discuss things further when he's better rested. Then let him get back to sleep.

I think maybe this? We mostly just want to be friendly here, I think, but knowing why he moved here seems reasonable. I could easily be talked into something else if anyone has a good idea, though.

EDIT: Added requesting a future meeting.

Well, that was fun! Not a lot to say here. We could ask about his spectacles but that seems a bit rude; better to do it later on.

I mean, if they'd let us copy the effect of Target-Tracking Eyes, it'd give us extra damage even if we changed nothing. It's just an overall plus. But yeah let's see how we go.
